MemoryAlpha editor refuses to change Adira's Gender to "Non-Binary"

Speaking of NEMESIS, it's the only Trek film to be written by an LGBT figure (John Logan), unless I'm forgetting anyone else?

Also, that line by Data does actually sound like a rephrasing of a line by Odo in "If Wishes Were Horses" where he's at Quarks trying to get everyone's attention, "Ladies, and gentlemen, and all androgynous creatures... Your attention, please!"

Well, LGBT people can be transphobic, but I still believe it was just an honest misstep on his part, assuming he even wrote that line as spoken, unless there's evidence that it wasn't.

Just thought it was worth pointing out, not that it makes the line right or wrong. For all we know it may have been ad libbed by Spiner.

Yeah, RuPaul is pretty transphobic and constantly uses the t-word despite being told that it’s offensive.

I lean heavily toward it was written by John Logan. I say this because Leonard Nimoy turned down directing Generations because Rick Berman wanted him to direct the script as written, and he obviously had many issues with the script. Since Rick Berman was still Executive Producer in Nemesis, he very likely wanted Stuart Briard to direct the script as written. Which brings us to John Logan.

My understanding of the TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT/Berman Production mores on set were that ad-libbing was a "no-no". Flexibility is not something that regime of Star Trek was known for. Rick Berman had to have a lot of control over Nemesis, because even bringing in outsiders to write and direct it couldn't save it from still feeling like "a TNG Film" instead of a film film.

From my own perspective: I took it as an unfunny joke in 2002. It makes me cringe in 2021. I don't know enough about John Logan to say what his intention was, but it was probably just what it looks like: a really stupid line where he thought he was being clever.

As far as transgender references in popular culture from 19+ years ago, Data's line ranks rather low on the offense-o-meter.

Twin Peaks’ example of a transgender character doesn’t hold up to 2021 standards, but it goes a long way compared to what Trek was even doing AT ALL in 1990.

Actually, at least in ST, "Gentlebeings" originated in a TAS script, not a novel. Specifically, "Mudd's Passion," the scene at the beginning, with Mudd addressing the crowd to pitch his love crystals.

It goes a long way compared to what everyone was doing in 1990. Especially Agent Cooper's response of respecting her without question. It's more progressive than a lot of people now.

I mean that's pretty cool, but I wasn't making any claims about where it started, just that it's what the novels have been doing for a while.

Of course it might have also explained things if we actually saw the transgendered species in the movie. Was their even any aliens at the wedding? Maybe they were off wherever Wesley was since we get once glimpse and that's it. Not sure if deleted scenes count as canon. Also why so many people at a wedding rehearsal anyways with everyone all dressed up and everything. Seems to me everyone including the transgendered aliens would be on Betazoid with Lwaxani getting ready for the real wedding.
