Spoilers Ah, the NEW uniforms...!

It could simply be a demand of all the new old worlds rejoining - "Alright, we're back, but only if you change those things! We're not gonna wear that!" XD
maybe will go the Crusade way...

For those who hasn’t seen that short-lived series, they started with relatively plain-looking uniforms, then the network invested more money and bought better looking ones, but insisted that the better funded episodes aired first, so they had 6 or so episodes with the totally different uniform in the middle. The solution was to introduce the plain one as a new uniform and them having a “laundry accident” happen, leaving the crew to be forced to revert to the more expensive one.

When I was a kid, I was sure Scotty was recast for TMP and suspected Riker was recast in TNG S2:lol:
Watching the movies with my girlfriend she was convinced Scotty had been recast as well.

A few months ago a retired master chief petty officer of the US navy started a series of really interesting (to me) Youtube videos dealing with the history of uniforms and naval equipment.

Having a better idea now of just how many times the Navy has changed just HATS in the last 200 years makes me open to Starfleet having as many uniform changes as they like.

Uniforms over the last several hundred years have continually evolved -- both for practical reasons, as roles and duties change, and also for aesthetic reasons, often reflecting fashions in civilian clothing (and vice versa!).

That said, it's usually possible to track some sort of iterative progression from each uniform variant to its successor(s) though occasionally there's a big leap and something new is introduced, such as when drab field uniforms replaced colourful military dress around the end of the late-19th / early-20th Century.

The problem with TV shows and movies, especially Sci-Fi fiction, is that producers and designers can largely do what they like, with more interest in aesthetics and marketing needs than anything else. The leap from TMP to TWOK is huge and for no apparent reason in-universe. It is what it is...

I like the new uniform.

I think I may actually prefer it to the original blue...

The basic idea is OK but I think some of the other variants of the 3189 era uniforms are actually better than the main "standard" uniform.

I still think the overall "look" is visually kinda bland and they'll realise that once they start filming with them in earnest so I do expect it's likely we'll see at least some iterative evolution of this design.

In the Captains briefing scene in 'Scavengers' there were lower ranked officers wearing red. One of them is seen briefly behind the asian female captain.

Personally I don't think the crew will be in these uniforms next season. I reckon there will be a new, more colourful uniform that represents the rebirth of the Federation.

Absolutely! I posted those images but I'd still forgotten about the officer in red standing behind one of the captains in Scavengers...! D'ohh...!

Edit to add...

This makes the current colour mix on Discovery even more weird. Visually, they need to shift a least a couple of folks from the bridge officers into red.

I'll be interested to see if you are correct and we get a further evolution of the uniforms before (or during) the next season. I suspect you may be right.

She looks pretty much the same. Hair and weight change a little bit, and even being a few years older can change the face a little, but that's pretty much all of us.
I was surprised to see she is the same age as me in real life. She does a great job of playing someone of cadet/ensign age

Yeah I thought it was odd that Detmer was in operations gold given that flight control has always been in the command track but i guess it doesn't matter if we're just going to see a new uniform variant next season.

There is little chance that there will be another uniform variant next season. I think they’ll stick with these for a good while. Maybe they’ll add subtle improvements. For example why everyone doesn’t have rank represented on their collar chevron is beyond me. It’s so difficult to read rank on the badges.

As the new uniforms are comprised of programmable matter, they just need to adjust the color and tint knobs. This will recreate the TNG issue where they had two different shades of blue and two shades of yellow.

Don't keep us in suspense. How many times has the Navy changed hats in 200 years?

I would also like to see Lt. Detmer at least in as the helmswoman. But, honestly its not been clear what other jobs besides pilots and commanding officers (who aren't doubling as a science officer like Spock) would be wearing command gold/red. Anyone can enlighten us on this?

JAG officers wore red in TNG. But, yeah, a lot of ship operations could fall under, um, Operations, without necessarily being a part of Command. Though, personally, I think it leads to other issues such making it clear who they should kill if on an away team.
