Spoilers Ah, the NEW uniforms...!

I've only just noticed that the shirts are asymmetrical on the bottom which almost makes them look like as if they were misbuttoned. I've never had a problem with the collars and the zippers on the blues (I'm in a minority with that, I know), but this really bugs me for some reason.

So now we went from blue

To grey

Cool

That black leather strip on the blues is kinda similar to the colored stripe they put on the standard SF grays.

All they need are some little hats and they'd all look like bellhops...

I mean it's not the worst design ever, but it's not great. It needs some contrast in there to make it pop. Even switching to black trousers (and maybe collars?) would help. I'd also kinda wished they'd embraced the Bajoran Militia inspired cut. That at least had some personality.

Mind you, these all look an awful lot more like dress uniforms than duty uniforms, so i wouldn't be shocked if they look a little different the next time we see them. The collar design looks especially awkward and uncomfortable.
Black trousers would look great on them. I tried the black collars, but they didn't really add anything to it.

EDIT:

Of course they could go really "old school" in their coloring scheme :D

My thing just how it makes them blend in to the set. I think the contrast works on the more bright and sterile-looking sets over at HQ, but the darker coloring of the Discovery sets has significantly less of that contrast, which just doesn’t give the uniforms enough pop.

But, hey, if there’s one thing we’ve seen in Starfleet uniform design, it’s that if you don’t like a uniform design, wait about five episodes, a new one will be introduced, no problem.

Yeah I had a go at the collars too and while I thought it might make the rank insignia more legible, it doesn't really halp matters.
But while we're here I thought I'd take a quick and dirty run at seeing how the more Bajoran inspired cut might look like...

...it kinda works...?
Not sure about the boots though.

I wonder what it look like if there was the classic yoke-line division? Grey shoulders, black torso, and keep the existing vertical department color stripe.

Or black and and grey swapped, so it matches up Lieutenant Willa's uni.

Sooo, going back a bit, it looks like the uniform of operations officer Tal does not match the current 3189 style. I thought it did, but the department stripe is shaped differently.

The collar insignia match does of the Vulcan officer at the holographic Kaminar induction ceremony. Perhaps all the officers in attendance were captains, and junior officer Tal was a contemporary.

If the assume the USS Relativity uniform (https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Wells_uniform) was worn until the end of the 29th century, the gray style may have become en vogue in the 30th or 31st century. Perhaps Senna Tal's uniform is part of that generation, and the whole set is the direct predecessor of Vance-era uni.

Hmh? It's judging her looks. Looks are fair game to be judged, just like everything else.

What's with the rank plates? Burnham gets four pips, but everybody else's is blank. Does this mean Burnham is actually a four-pip Admiral?

Timo Saloniemi

Yeah, that's just the over-the-top rank markings for Captain in 3189...!
Collar patch, both shoulders and also on the badge (just in case you missed it...)

The other captains in previous episodes were all wearing the same.

Sorry,
it looks like Ensign Tilly wears command red in the photo of this review: https://trekmovie.com/2021/01/07/re...ry-gets-connected-in-that-hope-is-you-part-2/

But in this video at time index 0:31 she wears blue:

Similarly, in the same video I thought I saw Ensign Tal standing portside on the bridge in a yellow operations uni, but they're next seen with their parents and having a blue science uniform. Am I seeing things wrong?

Looks like a shot that got cut. I really don't understand why Tilly is in Sciences blue though -- she was originally in operations/services copper and then moved to command but there clearly was a conscious decision by someone to change her department -- and who knows what her actual role is at this point. It's actually very odd that they've only got Burnham in red in that shot. They could have taken the opportunity to at least put Detmer and into red as the helm officer. I suspect things will change for next season. I also think the costumes are too bland and we'll see some adjustments to the design for main cast use. Likely we'll see some other variants too.

I'm still annoyed they moved Saru aside. I totally get why the character might wish to take some time to return to Kaminar and help Su'Kal adjust but it seems pretty mean to cut him out of that last scene. Would have been good to see Saru ing Captain's uniform as well, even if just boarding a shuttle...
