The communication problem is only an excuse to not answer Sahils calls

poor guy. All his life waiting and the first federation officer that shows up promises him big things, then immediately friendzones him to go out with the bad boy.

Sahil wanted to join Starfleet Academy. But then he found out he missed the cut-off age for new recruits. Poor Sahil. :p

(For the US Army, the cut-off is currently 42, which goes the oldest over here. I only know this because I had a friend who joined several years ago, in his early-30s, and I thought, "Wait a minute. You can still do that?!" Then another friend who'd been in the Army his entire adult life tried to get me join shortly afterwards.)

Why did the dilithium burn do anything at all to long range subspace communication?

They gave a reason in "That Hope Is You, Part 1". I don't remember it offhand. Under normal circumstances I'd check the end of the episode to let you know, but given what's going on today with the Outside World... that's the last thing on my mind right now. I'm watching/listening to the news on another window on my computer. And shaking my head in disgust about what's happened.

I'll check for the line of dialogue tomorrow, if someone else doesn't do it first.

EDITED TO ADD: I can't believe this. This is something I never thought I'd ever see in my life. Sorry, mods. I'll get off this now.

Am I remembering correctly here? That the majority of the relay stations at the time of the Burn ran on matter-antimatter reactors...which needed dilithium?

...Do we have that in writing?

I mean, it's no doubt Michelle as a first approximation for folks who meet the lead character, too, before the awkward setting-the-record-straight part. But they have this angel theme going strong, so momma Burnham might just as well be Gabriel in those official records we so far haven't seen on screen.

no idea. Always thought it was Gabriel, but memory alpha gives her as Gabrielle.

Yup, and of course, that's what the onscreen credits use, too. But those aren't really canon, and we can still debate the spelling of the name of Kirk's communications officer. So what the writers believe in need not be taken too seriously, as usual... :vulcan:

DSC in general has done pretty well with their "Okudagrams", using relevant rather than nonsensical text there, and we might eventually get "Gabrielle Burnham", too. But some of that stuff is still pure lorem ipsum, and some of it remains off focus. Still, I get a kick of us being able to read, say, Zora's analysis of ways to help Georgiou... Even if that's a real strain on the eyes.

MGM did an absolute hatchet-job on the original book (Disney did somewhat better with their conflation of the second and third, but Return to Oz wasn't anything to write home about, mainly because they tried to appeal to [or at least appease] fans of the MGM abomination). And I am a huge fan of all fourteen of the original books. (Not so much the ones written by Baum's successors, though, and I only consider Baum's works to be canonical.)

At any rate, it wasn't until the end of "Su'kal" that I realized that the story arc would continue in the present episode, and it wasn't until the end of the present episode that I realized it wouldn't conclude until "That Hope . . . 2."

    I'd say it's another 8.
