Honestly, I'm starting to get a bit of a Voyager vibe from Discovery. It's a show that ran screaming from its original premise, and has settled into a homey, if slightly beige show where most everyone gets along together and you can watch an episode of generic trek while you doze off on the couch.

So, criticism for being too epic (S1 and 2)....and criticism for being too bland (S3).

Got it.

I’m proud of myself. Made it 6 full pages before I said “fuck it” and stopped reading due to most of the comments being the same typical joyless blah blah blah from most.

Seems like there’s more excitement over a uniform that appeared for less than a full second in a trailer for next week than it possibly deserves.

I liked it.
Detmer is awesome.

In the Moments of Discovery video released with today's episode, Michelle Paradise talks about how the character of Osyraa is namedropped several times earlier in the season and the intention was to "give, hopefully, a growing sense of dread about who is this individual and who is running this salvage planet and with whom people are speaking with this little measure of fear."

Maybe it's just me, but, I never once got that sense. Yes, I wondered who this individual was because her name was dropped about six or seven times in the same episode and she was clearly made out to be important. But, I didn't ever get the sense of this oncoming threat.
It might have worked if they were able to successfully make the Chain out to be a threat to the Federation.

But they really weren't able to do that.

Welcome to fandom. No matter what you're doing it wrong.

Also, that uniform irritated me.

If it had been more like the Xindi, who were seen as an existential threat to Earth with their weapon then it would be a more successful adversarial relationship, an organization to truly be feared due to the amount of damage it could inflict. A vast criminal organization is fine if you don't want it to be seen as the great big baddie of the late 32nd century.

The episode was OK. I don't get why the writers keep making a big fuss about the Emerald Chain and the Orion. They are criminals, not a major threat to the quadrant or the galaxy. They act the same way the Ferengi did in the 23rd century, exploiting lesser advanced races and so on. Hardly the Borg or the Dominion.

The Emerald Chain is a mafia syndicate just like the Orion Syndicate used to be. It’s an evolution. But definitely not another Dominion like power. They are like the thugs on the block.

True enough. But you can't really call the Federation a power anymore either. Their power and influence is almost completely gone, their material and personnel spread so thin as to be at their breaking point. The Emerald Chain may just be the organized crime of the day, but the Federation is no longer the FBI, it's the late shift at the local precinct house. Overworked, underpaid, and probably only there because they're too stubborn to just give in to the corruption and decay.

Edit: Which might make Discovery Batman, in this analogy.

It's kind of like Mission: Impossible, the TV Series. The IMF used to fight nations in the Cold War during the first few seasons, then, later on, as the Cold War and the Vietnam War became less and less popular, they switched to the mob. Still enemies, but at least they're not enemies that will lead to the destruction of life as we know it.

People complaining about stakes having been too high during the first two seasons should be grateful that the main enemy now seems to be the Emerald Chain. The stakes will never get too, too high coming from them.

The real threat is if whoever/whatever caused The Burn is still out there. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. If it's a "who" and not a "what", then they'll probably be defeated at the end of S3 or very early in S4 if it's a cliffhanger. But the Emerald Chain will be here to stay, as a lower-level adversary.

Yeah, the scale is much different and the Emerald Chain are moving in on the block. They are far more dangerous because they have everything to prove. Are they a giant existential threat? No. Are they dangerous and can cause harm to their little section of space while causing trouble for a protectionist Federation? You better believe it.

Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make. The playing field has been leveled. The Federation is a lesser version of itself fighting enemies in a similar league who are trying to become more.

Plus listening to the actor's take in The Ready Room gave me a much better sense of their point of view.

30 planetary civilization level productions hubs would put even the now much weaker Federation so far beyond the Emerald Chain that they would basically be a joke.

The only reason they are any threat at all, is that Discovery didn't hand out it's Dilithium and the majority of Federation ships are apparently stuck in future spacedock.

I want both of that to happen. Only have Tilly meet Killy

It would be an interesting meeting between Acting XO Tilly with "The Witch of Wurna Minor" and "The Slayer of Sorna Prime"

Then Killy tries to snatch Mirror Georgiou back to her own universe, but she has no interest of returning to the Mirror-verse. A battle between USS Discovery and ISS Discovery would be the series cliffhanger finale ;)

I see. So the plenty of the Federation is utterly overwhelming, if not for the completely crippling scarcity it's currently suffering from. Well reasoned.

Not really, because that scarcity only involves FTL travel.

It also no longer exists since Discovery showed up with it's spore drive and giant room full of Dilithium crystals.

Switch those worlds over to producing orbital defense platforms, have Discovery jump them into orbit of various threatened worlds over the course of a few days, and the Emerald Chain is basically dead.

I gave this a 7. The evil Orion mob boss will make a good villain for the season but I hope there’s a bit more fleshing out of Orion culture and the species, which they could do a better job with. Osyraa is a little TOO green looking, almost Incredible Hulk green.

I liked Detmer getting her groove back and bragging to her crewmates. More of these people, please, and less of Burnham. I’d like to see Nilsson get a first name and learn more about them as people.

It'd be interesting to see if Osyraa's leadership over the organization is in part due to her female pheromones and the control she exerts over male Orions under her authority. It's been at least 900 years since we've seen an Orion in the canon and for all we know the Orion people found a way to inhibit the phermones and make their society more equal in the power that both men and women exert, but if not it'd be interesting to hear that female pheromones continue to be a dominating influence in the species and by connection the organization.

Really nice character moments weighed down by a rote action plot with a decidedly noncharismatic Big Bad except for the long nails... I was expecting a major reveal and got major green bland. Liked the easing into the "they" language and interaction between Culber and Stamets... it's like they are a "little sibling" to Stamets, and it's being played really well. The running captain's tagline was pretty funny without being overdone--Carry On, indeed, and the banter between Culber and Georgeou was nice too. Detmer finding her mojo was handled okay, although including the Grudge scene with antennae-less Andorian fell kind of flat. That kid was super cute too, at an age where he didn't even know it, which is all the more endearing. I'll let a rewatch determine how I felt about the Book and "brother" angle, but the lack of story line originality bothers me. Saru's turn as captain is fun to watch, and he's proving adept at walking a tightrope relative to Federation orders and protocol. This would've been an easy, very strong 8 if only I could've taken the antagonist seriously--paging the casting department...
