I'm giving this a 7.....

It was a fun episode, sorry spoilers I posted were from the next one. oopsie.

Anyway we got to see more of Book's planet and Keyla flying like Poe Dameron.. Go Keyla, the power of redheads.

Tilly is good as XO and seems to have adjusted to her role. But yeah Keyla cutting loose was amazing, can you tell I like her?

What the fricking hell happened to Georgiou? Her face did a freakout thing? What was that?

Osyra seems like a one note villian really. Disco should have plummed a few photons up her ship and messed her up for good. I don't like one note villains in any show they need to die.

Can't wait for the two parter.

It just occurred to me that Terran starships would have been constructed probably with some knowledge of Federation starships taken from the Defiant computer. In which case, the ISS Enterprise was very possibly constructed based on the description of the USS Enterprise in the Defiant computer.

I can't see why the Terran Empire would construct Terran ships identical to Federation ones, unless it was as some sort of practicality (just copy the design--but then why keep the names?).
Well, this is a long standing problem that enterprise kinda made worse.

In TOS the ship was exactly the same but the technology inside was different here and there...the theory was parallel evolution, where the society developed differently but the technology similarly.

Then enterprise came along and hinted that they copied the main universe...except that the ships were already the same anyway.

And now discovery introduced that huge starship with a miniature sun inside that the federation didn’t seem to have, plus that odd eyes problem they seem to have forgotten by season 2.

Osyraa is far too cardboard cut-out
her face looks cardboard for sure.

Discovery's main plot seemed a little low key this week, but it's nice that the various character arcs are progressing. Felt more like just the middle part of a larger episode, though I guess that's what the whole 'novel for TV' thing is about. I mainly want to know what's up with Empress Gorgeous, though, rather than the Emerald Chain. Still nice to see Grudge the Space Catte again, and I guess everybody has an 'I want in' moment.

One thing confused me about Book.
Did we not see him on his home planet in episode 1?
thought so. I guess that planet was *another* sanctuary.

Also, I was surprised that sanctuary was only a couple of weeks at warp...and what was that thing about a transwarp tunnel?

In TOS "Mirror Mirror",; no the ship was not exactly the same as the prime universe 1701. Both in the original effects and in the remastered effects; they used the model of the two Star Trek pilot episodes.

That alone shows the two ships were not EXACTLY alike. Also Scotty's evaluation was based on just a few hours of looking at various systems that he needed to access to either do the duties he was required to do to maintain the illusion he was the MU Scott; or the systems needed to effect their escape.

But to be exactly alike the ships would have to look exactly alike and In both versions of "Mirror Mirror", the VFX teams went out of their way to show that was not the case.

That's exactly what my wife and I said.

Some good set-up for later, but the episode itself was kinda "meh". The stuff with Book and his magic brother lost my interest a little bit.

The Federation signal/song in the middle of the epicenter is interesting.

Georgiou is so over the top now that it's not amusing. Maybe that's the point? She's scared. I don't find this a particularly interesting plot either, although maybe it's leading somewhere good.

this is not correct: in the original version the ship shown was in the standard tos configuration but orbited the opposite side (they had to do some reversing trickery with the footage to obtain that, as only one side of the model actually had illumination). In the remaster they used the cage variant to show it as slightly different, as you wrote...which of course in the original broadcasts was used over and over throughout the series via stock footage, so the ship often changed configuration during the same episode with no in-world explanation.

In any case, as I wrote, the ships were mostly the same, but the technology diverged slightly, as pointed out in the episode.

From what I remember, the original print of the episode did use the pilot style ship: spiked nacelles with no illumination.

Solid episode, more enjoyable than last week’s which was just a trifle dull upon rewatch. This won’t hit anyone’s top 10 episode lists but it was competently executed with the exception of Osyra being a rather bland, disappointing foe. Nice to get some more location shooting and fantastic to see Detmer get a chance to be badass and get her mojo back. Nice little character moments sprinkled throughout. Georgio gets the best lines as usual (“IT’S RAGE.”) The hate brigade will surely be in tears that there’s no tears to endlessly complain about. Oh, and glad to see Grudge is still part of the cast and not sidelined like Number One was. Obviously the cat is a better actor than the dog.

just checked, you are right. Always thought it was only something they did for the remasters, probably because on the original it’s really hard to tell (had to freeze the frame and zoom to be sure the spikes were not there).

This member of the hate brigade loved this episode. Had none of the things I usually find poor in DIS and showcased all the crew members I like.

Back to normal next week by the looks of it though as I can't stand space hitler

I remember watching it in the 1980's in reruns (and our UHF station used 35mm or 16mm prints to show them), and at that point I thought something odd about the mirror ship (being 12 and getting into Trek in a huge way at that point, I was looking at every detail, lol!)

Then when my parents got me the 5 volume VHS set from Paramount Home Video, it could be seen a little clearer that the nacelle caps were back to the spiked ones. I guess to further distinguish the ship?

I'm curious about Georgiou's plot, but, the problem is, it's not going anywhere right now. We haven't really been given any clues; just more than what we've been seeing over the last few weeks. Next week looks like we're going to get something, finally.

The show wants to focus on plotlines that I don't find particularly interesting. We got some clues that SOMETHING is in the nebula, but, then it's forgotten about to focus on Book's planet and Osyraa. The nebula mystery isn't even revisited or teased again in the episode. It feels like it needs to be a cliffhanger, but, instead the show ends each episode as if it's just a week-long commercial break. It's really frustrating.

It'd be interesting to see if Osyraa's leadership over the organization is in part due to her female pheromones and the control she exerts over male Orions under her authority. It's been at least 900 years since we've seen an Orion in the canon and for all we know the Orion people found a way to inhibit the phermones and make their society more equal in the power that both men and women exert, but if not it'd be interesting to hear that female pheromones continue to be a dominating influence in the species and by connection the organization.
I don't know... her nephew seemed to be quite a weak-kneed little twat. And would those within the same family even be affected by the pheromones? A far cry from the 'roid-rage thumbheads we saw in ENT.

I was picking up on that too. Must be why I like her.

This might sound like a technicality and it's not meant to say you can't be frustrated. But, these seasons are constructed as one big episode (for the most part) so your analogy is apt that it is just a commercial break.
