And the opposite of Uhura, who was given all the time less and less to do over the series.
Saru's decision is certainly unorthodox within the Star Trek universe, and it's going to have consequences. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

The A plot took most of the air as A plots tend to do.

People, including myself, have been screaming to get some of the other crew involved. A Tilly story of her talking to her friends, who still outrank her in the Trek structured chain of command, about the whole thing would have been far better than one conversation with Stamets. It might have then earned the schmaltzy "say yes" ending because they could see her struggling with it, not only can she do the job, but that she feels bad for leapfrogging them who have worked hard to be Lieutenants and outrank her. The way it was in the story, it looks like Stamets just went around and told everyone and they said "oh yeah, that's totally cool." They can all be supportive (even if that isn't very dramatic), but we'd get an opportunity to see these people.

The TOS supporting crew, who were basically there to say "yes sir" to Kirk, Spock or McCoy, had more development in their three seasons than Discovery has. This is a hill I choose to die on. Make me care about these people other than when they need to pilot the ship or fire the weapons or communicate with somebody.

That Tilly sounds so much better than the scared child we sometimes get in DIS

Nope. They were the definition of ciphers, morphing to fit the need of the plot. Becoming less and less developed as TOS progressed.

Well, once in a while they'd get their moment under the sun, like that drunken Irish guy who'd sing over the comm.

To be fair Tilly's cast too old to be an ensign/cadet. She should have been written as a dorky lieutenant from the start, not a cadet.

Harry Potter films had the same issue where Snoke, Sirius Black, etc. were cast way too old for their characters.

If Saru goes down, like the previous permanent Captain did, then strategically the most important ship in the fleet - the only one that can travel vast distances in the way it can - is under the command of an ensign with no senior leadership experience, no command experience, no tactical experience, and no knowledge or expertise of how to run a ship, a crew, or really anything beyond her own terminal. This puts the mission, the crew, the ship, the spore drive technology, Starfleet, and the Federation at risk. It’s one of the most astoundingly ignorant displays of leadership I’ve seen. On the other hand, you have Wesley who isn’t vital to the ship let alone Starfleet or the mission. I’m not debating the point that Wesley was handled poorly, I certainly won’t defend it, I’m debating that it’s both irrelevant to the case of Saru (as it’s a tu quoque fallacy) and that it is less egregious as a leadership action.

If you genuinely don’t see how, then I guess we just have a good ol’ fashioned disagreement.

It happens. I'm not saying it's ok. We literally have countries armed with weapons in the hands of people who probably shouldn't run a lemonade stand (not going to name names but we know who these are), because they told people what they wanted to hear during their campaigns or beat up/overpowered their predecessor.

It's a bad decision but unfortunately Saru's word is final unless Vance overrules him. As in the real world equivalents, we just have to make do and hope for the best (and honestly Tilly at least is better than the people I referred to above).

They probably couldn't get to them for a while, and then focused on more important trips

Owo, Rhys, Nilsson, and Bryce when they go back to their quarters after cheering for Tilly:

Does Captain Saru not like me? I'm not good enough for first officer? Did I do something wrong? :weep:

Detmer, who was already in a dark place, probably had a full fledged breakdown in front of Culber. :wah:

Detmer: I traveled a thousand years into the future hoping to find a cure for my injuries, but apparently even the 32nd century can't remove my implant! And now I'm being passed over for promotion because the captain hates me! Waah! :wah:

Culber: Now, now Kayla, just calm down. After all, if the Captain really hated you, he would have named my boyfriend, who you despise, as the new first officer.

So now, what is going to happen to the Empress? That's the question.

Mindwipe her and send her back to the 23rd century.

David Cronenberg: Empress Georgiou, our records show you active well past the supposed destruction of the USS Discovery. Therefore, to preserve our timeline, at some point we have to send you back to the 23rd century. However, doing so would be a violation of the Temporal Accords. Yet keeping you here risks undoing our timeline.

I'm not sure if Vance would have been too impressed with that guy. He's probably better off where he is.

since you mentioned politics, as an Italian living in 2020 I can testify that putting well-intentioned but incompetent individuals in charge doesn’t work very well.
