Year 5. Issue 16. Who are the 5 founders of the Federation.

This one? I thought I already had it on Flickr already, but I had to wait till I got home.

Huh? The guy on the right doesn't have any kind of facial tattoos or markings, just high cheekbones. He just looks like a human with a shaved head. All this over a whole lotta nothing.

Meanwhile, it's interesting that both this comic and this week's Discovery have shown us Andorians with beards. I never thought of them as having facial hair.

But my post was also in response to your earlier comment, "implied that 61 Cygni and Epsilon "Indii" [sic] were Earth colonies too."

Yes, the Franz Joseph manual implied that, and the Medical Reference Manual later assigned those star systems to Tellar and Andor instead. A lot of people assume FJ named Tellar and Andor as founders, but he didn't. That was added later to the foundations he laid.

Me too, maybe here? (but it is refusing to load at the moment):

No, that's not it at all. I think what I was remembering was a Memory Beta or Alpha article about Rigel. I found in my old Rise of the Federation notes that both the Spaceflight Chronology and Starfleet: Year One designate Rigel as one of the Federation's founding members. So not everyone has agreed with the Earth/Vulcan/Tellar/Andoria/Alpha Centauri paradigm. But I can't find anything about what other founding members those two works list. Do you have them? (I've really got to get a copy of the SFC at some point.)

Actually from that frame I thought there were two humans. This is a better pic of the same guy

And this is a different person of the same species.

There was this guy from TMP, but the actor in actual TMP footage had no beard.

My stuff is in storage, but yeah, the Rigel Colonies was listed as a UFP member in a few things - was it also in the "Introduction to Navigation" manual in "Star Trek Maps"? Of course, it also places the Orion homeworld as in orbit of Rigel.

The hexagons on the bald man's head in the "founders" image are clearer in Mike's scan than Therin's. You can barely see them wrapping around the head as they do on the admiral, and they continue down the neck towards the shoulders.

I've boosted the contrast in the image to make the markings stand out a bit more.

I'll boost the contrast in the image, give me a minute.

Oh, okay. I see it now.

Still, unless they actually say "Alpha Centaurian," we can't be certain that's what they had in mind. As I said, not every work has gone with the same five founders.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a bald alien with hexagonal patterns on the head somewhere before, but I'm not sure whether it was Trek or something else.

I always thought it was Alpha Centauri, but yes it's basically beta canon at best. Does the series ever even visit the Centauri system? Poor AC....

Might be just Memory Beta itself, specifically here, where they list the 8 founding members from Starfleet: Year One (Earth, Vulcan, Andor, Tellar, Osadj, Dedderai, Vobilin, Rigel), as well as the traditional five (+Rigel) from the Spaceflight Chronology.

Arcturians, maybe? Not really a match. Maybe a young one before the droopiness sets in or the original Arcturians before too much cloning kicked in.

Ah, ok, mine was a frame grab from an IDW preview page.

People have attempted, but end up lost in space.

Ah, yes, that's exactly it. Thanks.

So that confirms what I thought, that at least one version omits Alpha Centauri as a founder. And at least two include Rigel, which was an influence on my choice in Rise of the Federation to make Rigel one of the first new members to sign on after the founding five.

No, I'm talking about actual hexagonal patterns. If such a species has been seen in Trek, that's presumably what the comic is basing it on.

If you tried to embed those with the IMG code, it didn't work because those links go to the gallery pages that contain the images, rather than the images themselves. On the gallery page, right click to copy the image location, and you can use that to embed.

Thank you!

Huh? That's a different character altogether, surely. He's in a 2270s admiral's uniform. The other guy, as I understand it, was meant to be a Federation founder from the 2160s. (And Therin just posted the same while I was typing this.)

In my first post where the links didn't work I did say he was another person of the same species.

Year 5 has Starfleet in the TMP uniforms when Enterprise returns from its 5 Year Mission. I thought it worked well just to show how things have changed and moved on while they've been away.

DC did the same thing in their Annual #2 in 1986. By my count, Year 5 makes the ninth distinct version of the end of the 5-year mission, after The Lost Years by J.M. Dillard; DC Vol. 1 Annual 2 "The Final Voyage" by Mike W. Barr et al.; my version alluded to in Ex Machina and depicted in Forgotten History; "Empty" by David DeLee in SNW10; "A Bright Particular Star" by Howard Weinstein et al. in DC Vol. 2; the version in David R. George III's Crucible trilogy; IDW's Mission's End by Ty Templeton et al.; and the version in The Autobiography of James T. Kirk by David A. Goodman.
