I wish for a second that people who had issues with the lack of a straight human male character in an episode or a series could experience a smidgen of what it might be like to watch a show or an episode where there are either no characters who are women, people of color or LGBTQIA+, or where those characters were either marginalized or token.

I'm compelled to point out that the stereotype of Kirk as a horndog is pretty well exaggerated. And who says he would have to go through all the women first?

 

As someone who has went through a lot of trauma this episode hit me hard. It was difficult to watch and also honest. It was very hard not to break down.

 

I do like how they chose one of the more outwardly tough characters in Detmer to highlight the issue. Admittedly, I have not been through the type of trauma being discussed here, but I thought it was a good idea to show that it could affect anyone.

I also liked it how they are showing us that the warning signs may not be immediately obvious. I'm thinking back to the scenes (in episode 2 maybe?) on the bridge when Detmer was questioning Saru's orders. At the time it did seem strange, but I didn't think it was PTSD.

 

I do hope they are careful with Detmer and don't just make this a
"hotshot risk taking daredevil pilot/driver/barman loses his friend and his mojo and has to quickly regain it with the help of a good woman in time for the big battle/race/busy Saturday night shift" young Tom Cruise style story

 

Not just Detmer, the entire crews Trauma plus Adira in the pool, and the admission that they're all not ok, and won't easily be OK.

 

TV was great till they shoehorned Mr. T into The A Team and it all went down hill from there. Gone are the good old days of real men you could look up to on TV like Rock Hudson and Montgomery Clift

 

What does some reviews calling the episode a chick flick suddenly have to do with race?

 

I didn't need to pick up on straight because I was the one that mentioned "straight male" in the first place.

You for some reason decided to add race to it.

 

And yet us Asians rarely ever get Main Billing or are the Star of our own TV shows in the US.

Heck, Blacks, Latinos, LGBTQAI+ all get front billing over us Asian Americans.

Heck, we haven't even had a Asian American Captain as the head of a Trek TV show.

Michelle Yeoh was the closest we got, but they turned her into the Terran Empreror instead.

And don't forget Hollywood and the lack German Representation or many parts of Europe to be portrayed in StarFleet as lead characters.

We've had more Americans & Canadians on the show, but no Australians or New Zealanders.

Heck, what about Arabic Characters? Indian Characters, Mongolians?

There are entire Ethnicities on Earth that aren't represented what so ever in Trek or on TV.

 

Am I right in thinking the closest we got here were 2 English guys.

Scotty was supposed to be from Scottland.
JLP = French, but portrayed by a British Actor
Malcom = Reed, portrayed by a British Actor

No Irish Character, No Welsh Characters

No truly French Actors and lack of EU representation.

Honestly, he slipped my mind at the time of the post, his name fell into the Scottish bucket when I was trying to remember.

No I meant that the closest we got to Indian or Arabic were Bashir who is a British Indian character played by an Arabic actor and Clem Fandango/Vok who is a British/Asian/secret klingon played by a British Asian actor.

Also Reed was an English character as well as actor
Crusher was from fantasy Scotland planet and La Sirenas holograms covered all the bases

 

I think La Sirena's Holograms were hilarious and gave the actor alot of fun material to work with =D

Plus, with their Han Solo Archetypes, they gotta make him go shirt-less at some point to appeal to the numerous fans male & female fans.

Remember Booker went shirt-less and that's some real fan service for male & female fans too!
