Spoilers Ah, the NEW uniforms...!

It's not TOS. I don't want it to be, or be innovative

But that's what 'innovative' means. The problem with Disco's production is it's very much a mish-mash of everything that came before.

Take the bridge computer chirps, for example. The klaxons, and hails, and button beeps -- they're all a random mashup of TOS and TNG (Or VOY specifically) sounds. The sound production never bothered to come up with something new.

This entire episode was revisiting DS9 aliens.

Mke didn't set out to create something that would become - dare I say - "iconic." He set out to design something fresh and new and create an aesthetic base to set TNG apart from TOS. But it was so unlike anything that anyone had ever seen before, that people took notice.

And the Disco people actually did something like this with the Klingons. And I raved about how much I like them. But people pissed and moaned and they regressed the design back to something closer to what was.

Yikes! Forget about going to the bathroom in a hurry. The poor actors inside these costumes...

TOS had the bad luck of being created 60 years ago and didn't have to work as hard given the poor resolution of TVs.

Yes, but that wasn't quite my point. If DSC was being billed as a 10-years-before prequel to TOS, then the producers should have tried to make it look like TOS with a more updated aesthetic. What they did instead, in my opinion, was to make it look like any other sci-fi show produced in the 2000's. And while the production values themselves are top-notch, the actual look and feel of the show is about as far from the TOS aesthetic as you can get. But I've mentioned this all before and really don't feel like getting into a semantics argument about it.

I really like these new uniforms! They seem like a good progression from prior uniforms. The funny thing is that the color palette reminds me of TMP!

And this is why it will never innovate. No one wants it to be new, or fresh or inventive. Because the moment it dares to stray away it gets slapped around, told its not good enough and will never be like its perfect older brother, TOS. So, Discovery slinks back to its room and just muddles through.

It will never be TOS-but it will always be slapped for not being so.

Don't be silly, people stopped pooping and peeing in the 24th century.
Finally, a future I can get behind!

That's not true at all. I'm all for innovation. But if you're going to innovate, don't advertise yourself as being part of the thing you're trying to distance yourself from.

I see very few people with your point of view. And even when it does happen there is still the constant comparison game.

So, I'd rather it just die at this point. Can't win for losing.

The problem was that, in my opinion, CBS didn't think DSC could stand on its own merits either as a self-contained show or a reboot of Star Trek, so they felt they needed to tie it into TOS to get more of an audience (no doubt an idea conjured up by their marketing department.) What they didn't seem to understand was that Star Trek fans will most likely watch the show regardless of whether it's a reboot or not, and if they don't watch it, it's not because it wasn't a prequel to TOS.

So am I supposed to say 'Yes' now? Is that how this works?

That is what fans have demonstrated repeatedly that is what they want to buy. Abrams Trek, merchandising, fan films, Axanar even, all pointed the TOS way. I don't blame marketing at all-they went with what fans indicated.
I tend to agree. There is no mandate for a TOS aesthetic even ten years prior.

i'm sorry but this shit has been ''debated'' for over 4 years now just GIVE! IT! UP! already no need to shitpost in another thread with ''muh tos aesthetic'' bullshit
No need to be rude. They’re free to discuss it until the mods say otherwise.

And that's my point: if the marketing department said "Connect the show to TOS and you'll get more viewers and they'll buy more merchandise," and that actually happened, then I'd understand. But I don't think connecting DSC to TOS instantly created more viewers or helped sell more toys.

I'll quote @CorporalClegg above: No.

Indeed. I may disagree but it's a legitimate point of discussion.

Sell more toys? :vulcan: I'm going to assume not literraly.

I don't think the marketing department said that. I think the leadership at CBS went with what they thought people wanted.
