I enjoyed this one. I like a good character driven episode. I think Culber should have been the one to accompany Adira to the Trill, if for no other reason than he's a Doctor. OK, I also think some other characters need a spotlight.
Discovery has a tendency to lay it on with the heavy drama, but in this instance, it was probably long overdue.
Very reminiscent of TNGs 'Family'.

Whew. I've written a whole bunch of notes for this one, indicative of how much I've loved it. Rated 10. The whole episode was rife with callbacks to lore, hints towards the future with Zora/the Sphere AI and the usual emotional moments and highly enjoyable crew interaction.

So, we finally have confirmation that the symbiont is named Tal and that they have knowledge reaching back to at the very least the 2390s, based on that captain wearing the PIC uniform. Adira's journey to the center of the mind gave me similar vibes to Saints of Imperfection, and also of Equilibrium, naturally. Her soul-searching vision also reminded me a bit of Rey's one from The Last Jedi. Don't laugh, that's a good thing for me. The whole sequence was beautiful and heartbreaking, especially after isoboramine was name-dropped and it became clear she was blocking Tal's memories off because they were traumatic. The entire vision of her together with Gray was saturated with a tense buildup towards something tragic until it practically shattered everything in the form of an asteroid smashing into their ship. And then, it all culminated in a cathartic scene of Adira and Tal finally joining, and the Trill accepting her after a rocky start, once again helping to rebuild the Federation one planet at a time.

As for the B plot, I loved Hugh being the emotional center of the episode for once, especially as he voiced much of my own concerns about the crew needing some release after having borne the weight of the world on their shoulders for two seasons. I'm a bit disappointed they didn't get to have their "thank god we're alive party" (oh the headcanons), but the dinner gave us so much more. With Saru not even waiting for Burnham to arrive back from Trill, Paul and Tilly looking ready to jump at each other's throats, Georgiou trolling Saru when he was trying to give a speech, Tilly making a hilariously inappropriate haiku after Georgiou made one (even though that enjambment in the first line was really clunky, tsk tsk) and so on... it looked like it would be a glorious exercise in cringe comedy, until it suddenly wasn't, and Paul's complete inability to process his own emotions as well as Keyla's severe PTSD crashed down hard on us. The moment she started laughing without any joy, it was obvious this won't end well.

I also liked the scenes wrapping up the sequence, both Keyla admitting she needed help to Hugh as well as Tilly kindly repaying Saru for him cheering her up in Far from Home, complete with Paul arriving to apologize to both of them. I was also intrigued by the Sphere AI finally asserting itself and deciding to help the crew with their stress. Will it actually develop into Zora in the end? I hope so. I laughed when it briefly flashed on Saru's computer and began giving him suggestions; almost as if it couldn't bear him getting nowhere anymore, rolled its imaginary eyes and said "oh, for fuck's sake."

My usual stream-of-consciousness thing:
  • Burnham has grown so much. She's even toying with Adira when she wants to go down to Trill alone. I still want to see how she had opened up though.
  • The oceans of Trill aren't violet, not canon!!! Tropical Trill and the caves of Mak'ala look reasonably similar to how they did in Equilibrium, though.
  • One bit I really liked from the dinner was the "aye" roll-call, with Georgiou, who was up until then busy trolling Saru, joining in with "I never said 'aye', but I'm here," then raising her glass. She does have a heart, deep down. Shriveled, gray like a Romulan's, possibly emitting toxic fumes, but it's there.
  • The arrival of the hosts very much reminded me of Aang or Korra seeing visions of their predecessors in the Avatar franchise. Adira is now responsible for the balance between the four nations, it's canon.
  • One of the syllables said by the Trill at the end was "zhian-", a neat call-back to the zhian'tara ritual.
  • Like others have said in the trailer thread, the 32nd century Starfleet uniform has definite Bajoran vibes with a dash of Babylon 5's Earthforce.

I had a flashback to this moment during the episode. I'm sure I'm not alone...

I really liked this episode; it wasn't a chore to sit through for once.
I haven't found watching Discovery so far to be a chore yet this season. On that rival Star franchise though, I was constantly looking at the time left on the Season 2 premiere of the Mandalorian wondering when it would end.

Lots of issues with this one.
1) Nobody thought to mention to the holo-trill that "by the way, the squid joined with a human, will that be a problem before they come down there?"
2) Why a shuttlecraft? Why not beam down? Yeah, the first TNG trill episode said they couldn't use a transporter but DS9 proved that wrong.
3) Burnham never thought to use her communicator once when attacked by the Trills? You know.."Hey Discovery, just an FYI...we are having a problem here in case you never hear from us again!" Not to mention requesting an emergency beam out.

Tilly's gained some weight during the last 900 years. Not a problem, just an observation.

Maybe I missed something while my cats were issuing their demands.

Still, It was a fairly decent episode. I gave it a 7.

Why aren't they even using 32nd century tech to help at all is another question? Did Discovery download the thousand years of stuff they missed from Earth? That would take an entire team to sort through all the info.
That's the question that everyone should be asking.

1) We don't know how much the Discovery crew knew about the Trill. I don't know if we the viewers had any reason to believe before this episode that some Trill mght consider the notion of a squid joined with a human to be blasphemous. So I don't think there is a particular reason to see that as an oversight by Discovery any more than that Adira is right-handed.

2) Arbitrary choices are arbitrary. Sometimes the crews here (and all Trek) beam down, sometimes they take a shuttlecraft. To fanwank, it might have made more sense to take a shuttlecraft if Michael and Adira thought it might be a longer stay.

3) Considering Michael beat down the Trills with a quickness, she didn't have a need to use her communicator or request an emergency beam-out at first instance. And once they got to the pool, they weren't going anywhere until they resolved what was up with Adira. If I had a dollar for each time an away party didn't take an obvious and sensible precaution like you're mentioning....well, I'd have a couple fistfuls of dollars.

Yeah, it's definitely Star Trek tropes at its finest :)

Even if Earth is out of the Federation now, Discovery didn't take advantage of the favor Earth obviously owed them saving them from Wen to do research about what they missed (even their cover story of being a generational ship would still justify asking for such catchup)? Or research anything about Trill at all before going there? What's the rush anyway? The Federation was gone for a century, a month to catch up on things isn't going to end the galaxy.

They recklessly run around the galaxy with thousand year old out of date tech believing they can restore the Federation. They don't bother to do any basic research or do any catchup. Saru doesn't even put together a team solely to catch up on 32nd century science and dumps the task of replicating the spore drive to 2 people, a task that would realistically require a massive research team with at least one person who, you know, is up to date on 32nd century tech/science.

And these guys are going to save the Federation? They're lucky they haven't been shot out of the sky yet or assimilated by the Borg.

Anyone think Zora reminds them of Nell from Battle Beyond The Stars? When she was bantering with Saru, I got that vibe.

Literally the only reason Discovery is relevant is because of the spore drive. Other than that they feel like as if a ship crew from the Byzantine Empire showed up in our time, then traveled to Istanbul to chat up the head of the Eastern Orthodox church about rebuilding the Byzantine Empire. Everyone, including who they'd try to recruit for their self proclaimed mission, would think that this crew has lost touch with their priorities and should focus on adapting to modern life.

Wait, so is the Sphere data personality voice the same voice as on Legends Of Tomorrow, cos it sounds like it... Unexpectedly nice to see Gulber actually be a ship's doctor pretty well, rather than just Stamets's baggage.

To be clear, Discovery didn't save Earth from Wen. Wen wasn't a threat so much as an annoyance. What Discovery did was get the two sides talking instead of shooting at each other.

Who knows if Earth, particularly in its isolationist phase, has information about the current political/religious climate on Trill, or that whatever research it might had would have yielded information to let the Disco crew know that Trill might react badly to a human hosting a symbiont?

It would make sense that Dr. Culber might have tried to access information about Trill-human bonding to try to make sense of things medically. If so, that sort of database probably wouldn't reveal "We don't have any information about that because it is a SIN!"

It's not particularly reckless to go to Trill, from what we saw. It seems to be a peaceful planet. Since no one seems to know what happened to the Federation, reawakening Tal is as good a lead to pursue as any.

I was wondering if they got Annabelle Wallis back or if it's someone else.
