I'll grant that the away team should have been bigger. Indeed, as a diplomatic mission, should it not have included Saru?
This problem goes back to TNG though. TOS had Kirk absurdly be in every landing party, and then since TNG they went the opposite direction and are like "No captain shall be in an away team ever!!!" (joking but it seems the writers lost track of when a captain should and shouldn't be on the landing team around that time)

That rule didn't last long since Picard gets assigned to a covert ops mission.

I think this marked the first time a Starfleet crew has not once, but twice referred to their ship as a "monster." I felt like that was an odd choice since Discovery has never been depicted as especially large. I know it's super nitpicky but Detmer using it and then Owosekun using it again a few minutes later sort of brought me out of an otherwise well written scene.

It would help if we actually knew anything about Detmer. I mean she was composing a farewell letter to a "best friend" she'll never see again last season. Does she have any family or friends she'll miss (this is actually a problem that's gone unaddressed for the entire crew). Why aren't she and the crew scrounging records on what happened to those they left behind?

What do we know about Chekov's family other than he doesn't have a brother? Uhura's? We only know Scotty has a sister because of the director's cut of TWOK, and Sulu having a daughter wasn't established until Generations. But that didn't undercut the drama of TOS.

This was an excellent episode, just well done and very entertaining and affecting in all its parts. VERY happy to see it.

Exactly so. I am continually amazed at the requirement that we know a character's biography to care about them now. My first episode of Trek was "Balance of Terror." I still was upset that Tomlinson died even rewatching it last year.

The best episode thus far this season.

Discovery works best when it slows down and lets its character's breath, process, and shine. And I'm glad the show paused for an episode, did the character work with Adira and Gray and the showing the repercussions for the crew's decision to leap 900+ years into the future.

This episode did the character work this episode without shortcuts, time jumps or montages. It gave space for that work to happen. And the actors all did a fantastic job with the material.

As someone with severe PTSD, I appreciate that the show showed Detmer and the rest of the crew processing their trauma. They did well with this also last season with Dr. Culber. Makes up for the half-ass job they did with Ash Tyler in the first season.

Also, I'm very interested the Adira and Gray arc. I'm a sucker for a love story with complications, after all. Both actors did a fantastic job.

None of those characters were put in a situation where they were permanently separated from almost everyone they knew.

In the DS9 episode Children of Time the idea of being separated from friends and family permanently was discussed in its full horror in 1 episode, and handled better than in multiple episodes of Disco.

this does remind me of a question that I indirectly asked Terry Farrell: if there was any thought to developing a past or family life for the Jadzia host. She said that she would have found it too much of a burden to account for another life, amongst those already explored. To some extent, the amount of attention given to characters' backgrounds should be commensurate with the size of the role, the abilities of the actor, and the amount of detail that would be added in. Imagine how muc more "canon" would have to be accounted for.

I suspect the answer is no, but I still wonder: will the writers explore the problems of re-association with Tal via Head Gray?

They have so few hosts as it is. I don't think they can afford to discriminate among the few that they have.

Although it's funny that they forgave the Dax symbiont for having been a serial killer in one of his/her incarnations but they threatened a permanent ban for reassociation. Killing people is more forgivable than reassociating with them!!!

I've been trying to find the words to explain why the drama works here when it has fallen flat in the past.

The best I could come up with is everything - the writing, the camera framing, and so forth. - treats Adira and Gray as real people and not just characters.

*By the way, is it supposed to be Gray or Grey? I've looked at several sources on the webz and have gotten about equal examples of both.
