Your annual vacation/holidays

^ I didn't mean right now...

I meant, are they open for indoor dining AT ALL. Their website doesn't say anything, although a phone call couldn't hurt.

Part of me wishes I could just go to a place that doesn't give a fuck about Covid and then just come back and self quarantine for two weeks. Risk myself and nobody else.

I won't. But in the winter I'll look for some place to go that's warm and has mostly outdoor stuff.

I know. A phone call would be a good idea since google can be wrong.

Baseball teams are starting to sell 2021 tickets, but I'm hesitant to buy any right now.

Maybe I'll just go to ballparks that are within driving distance - Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis. Odds are that my favorite teams (Yankees, Mets) will go to any or all of those ballparks at least once next year.

At least I won't end up wasting money on airline tickets that I can't use...

I don't know if this sounds like a stupid question, but...

I have been considering visiting Japan once this whole pandemic thing eases off. However I not only don't speak Japanese, I can't read it either. It's this last bit that concerns me.

If I'm in a typical large Japanese city, how much (if any) English am I likely to see on things like road signs, train stations, airports, stores, restaurants, etc.?

As I said, it's not the SPOKEN language that has me concerned. I'm sure that in most Japanese cities where lots of tourists go, some English is probably spoken. My concern is with the printed word.

See, that's the thing. I've never been to Japan before so I really have no idea about where to go (except places that serve Okonomiyaki, which I have been aching to try  ). I'd have to just hang around and see what's interesting.

Which is fine as far as it goes but as I said, I can't read Japanese, so I'm not sure how much English is likely to be on street signs, in subway stations, etc.

Random metro station in downtown Tokyo, via google maps street view. I think you’ll be ok

Well, it doesn't look like the Canadian border is going to open up any time soon, so my dad and I are probably going to have to cancel the train trip. Again. :(

That's what's hurt the most about all this. If I have to cancel a trip I was supposed to take alone, hey, I just gotta suck it up and deal with it. But my dad and I don't have a lot of chances to vacation together (he sometimes has difficulty walking, so he can't come with me to the big cities I like to go to), so when we find something we like, we hold onto it.

At least minor league baseball is starting to open up again, so maybe we can go to some Omaha Storm Chasers games...

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself on the roof of your hotel with a bad hangover :shifty:

As for me, the missus will be visiting her family back East. Nine days of freedom (it’s summer break for me as well)

Anyone else with vacation plans for this year?

I've been going to a lot of baseball games in Kansas City. I'm not a Royals fan, but they do have a very nice ballpark, and it's only a three hour drive away from Omaha (where I live). Plus I just thought it was a nice first post-lockdown vacation to take. I went to some games last month, will go to some more this week, and (very stoked about this, BTW) a series with the Yankees in August.

Other vacations I've got lined up:

- Chicago (July)

- New York City (September)

I'm also actively planning my return to Germany. I'm hoping the Oktoberfest will be back on for next year and that the EU border will have opened up by then.

Besides, I'm eagerly awaiting my chance to try the new Berlin airport!
