Your annual vacation/holidays

As cities like New York, Chicago, etc., start to open up again, I genuinely hope that the people who live there don't mind tourists returning.

Look, I know as well as anyone that tourists can be a pain in the ass. I try not to be like that. But I'd hate to think that you don't want us there.

I live near a tourist town, and when I have to go in to the town during the tourist season I tended to find it seems to take twice as long to go half as far. Though I tend to avoid the place all year round.

Though I suspect after the pandemic business would love to have tourists back. The locals who work in businesses who rely on tourists will likely be ok with them coming back as well.

I don't miss the tourists when I lived in DC. They act like the city's like Disneyland.

I try to blend in when I go on vacation. I never ask for directions, and I don't stand in the middle of the sidewalk staring at buildings or anything like that. And I do NOT, under any circumstances, wear Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops, with a camera the size of my head strapped to my waist.

That said: On some of my trips to NYC I have, on occasion, been asked for directions...by people with New York accents. I admit, that gave me a little boost to the ol' ego.

It used to annoy my wife, when she rode the metro back in the day, whenever a tourist would stand next to the metro map and yell how many stops they had left to their group.

Just returned from Austria. I'm feeeling relaxed......

I finally decided to book an Alaska cruise for the week of Labor Day, 7 days roundtrip from Seattle, via Royal Caribbean. My first cruise was back in September of 2019, same destination, but with Princess. Vaccination is required, so I've got that taken care of.

Looking forward to going to New York City in a few weeks.

Am trying to find some kind of carrier for my vaccination card (which, in NYC, you now have to show pretty much everywhere you go, probably including toilets  ) so it doesn't get damaged in my pocket.

Has anyone done a Covid test a few days before their travel? Royal Caribbean is requiring all adult passengers to get a negative Covid test result at least 72 hours prior to sailing. My medical provider may not be able to provide the result within that time period.

Even if you make your test when you travel, sometimes, in some countries, after 5 days of staying in their country, they are requiring another test made there (where you landed/travel).

I'm really upset since it was proven that Ferengis are immune to this, also to any kind of flu.
Being stuck here on Ferenginar is not pleasant since it's raining again.
Have some important "business meetings" on Earth and earthlings are making trade impossible...

It never rains in Southern California.....;)

I would not exactly rule out street executions for anyone convicted of using the word "vacay".

I'm tempted to also hate the word "staycation", but it gets a free pass, because the TV show Corner Gas literally invented that word (you can look it up).

One of the bizarre things about traveling during the pandemic is having to spend $275 on a rapid Covid PCR test. :scream: I hope this Alaska cruise is worth it.

I'm currently on board Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas. One of the destinations had to be canceled due to inclement weather, so we're sailing at sea on Days 2 and 3. I'm looking forward to Sitka, in which I've scheduled a tour for Thursday. After that, it's Juneau and Ketchikan, two places I visited during my 2019 cruise with Princess.

Traveling during the pandemic is quite different, to say the very least. When I went on my Alaska cruise two years ago, I met many great people along the way although I traveled alone. This time around, I feel others tend to stay within their social bubbles, which is understandable, since I have mostly kept to myself. That's not to say the passengers are aloof; many of the guests and the ship's crew are quite friendly. There's just less of a sense of connection this time, possibly due to social distancing requirements.

Health and safety are paramount. All passengers with the exception of small children have been vaccinated. Also, staff in the buffet restaurant have to serve the food, whereas it used to be self-service. There are hand sanitizer stations all over the ship, and while some areas don't require it, masking is the norm even for vaccinated passengers.

Welcome aboard the new normal!
