- those hand weapons are surprisingly bulky. This is over 900 years in the future, after all. Apart from the initial Dustbuster phasers of TNG, hand weapons back then didn't appear to be any larger than a deck of cards. So they go from phasers that small...to this?

They took TOO much inspiration from the MegaMan franchise.

phasers: shoot (unless its TWOK) an instantaneous bright beam that can be easily aimed.

cuff-blaster-thingy from 31st century: shoots a slow lethargic glowing blob slower than the bb gun you had as a kid. impossible to aim at anything but close quarters.

I guess they care more about Particle Density and Volume than speed which is not what I would expect for improvement.

The only thing that looks improved is that it's "Ease of Use" / "Ergonomics" has improved for a wide range of hand types and that it's harder to knock the weapon out of your hands.

Other wise, give me my Phaser Blasting 1911 =D.

Faster Energy Bolts FTW instead of Beams.

Better Energy Consumption / usage model over continuous beams.

Honestly the old Phaser Dust Buster, if remodeled, would make a nice "Phaser Saber" that had INFINITE range and only stops at the first thing that it touches.

Hattie McDaniel preferred being paid more money to play a maid and getting an Oscar for her troubles then having the real life experience of being a maid. I guess she should have held out for the roles where she was the love interest opposite Clark Gable

Or we could be happy for her success but still wish she was treated better than she was, such as when she had to sit at a segregated table in a “no blacks” hotel to get her award. Or should she just have been happy to be there?

the old west trick shooters and the modern "cowboy action shooting" enthusiasts manage to do the whole point-shoot from the hip quite well. Maybe they need to try the new cuff blaster things. if I don't have a decent rear sight, I can't hit anything with my middle aged eyeballs.

that is one downside of a beam, not exactly a sniper weapon unless you don't care of your sniper only ever gets one shot in his career. I'm more of a Walther PP/Makarov guy but a 1911 Phaser does sound nice.

Maybe. But she says she almost quit TOS despite the groundbreaking nature of her role. Sometimes being better isn’t the same as being good, especially when before was bad.

I don’t think we should accept questionable portrayals without scrutiny because the past sucked more.
You're leaving out the part where Nichelle didn't realize at the time how "groundbreaking" her role was, until she had that conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King.
For her, it was a job that she felt wasn't using her to her full capacities as an actress.

You really think Nichelle Nichols didn’t realize there were few African-American women who were regulars on TV shows, much less regulars who were treated as equally as Uhura was?

Been more interesting if Mikey broke out her phaser2 while firing back using stun instead of the hand cannons.
You'd think personal shields would be a thing .. Maybe personal cloaks.
And transwarp beaming? Is that a thing?
Maybe artificial wormholes between systems?
Just spitballing,

You really need to go find and watch interviews with her in which she describes exactly how she felt during the filming of TOS and how her conversation with Dr. King changed her thinking.
You apparently don't have a clue.

She was a young actress just trying to make ends meet, the importance of her skin color was certainly in the back of her mind while trying to find roles, but it wasn't her driving motive at the time.

Gene Roddenberry purposefully had it in his mind as he was creating the show and it probably came up in conversations with the cast, but all of them were mainly trying to do the job they were hired for, to pay their bills.

The point of the story, as I read it, is that Dr. King told her of the impact she was having on the audience at home, even in a part that was not what it could be. It’s actually a perfect example for what I was saying. We can be happy for Nichelle’s achievements while acknowledging that she was not used to her potential. Similarly, we can be happy Discovery has given us a Black female lead, but that doesn’t mean we should not think carefully about how the show writes for its Black characters. It’s not an extreme viewpoint, I don’t think.

What about us Asians?
Not a single Japanese / Taiwanese / Chinese / Korean / Indian / Mongolian / Phillipino lead?

Michelle Yeoh is the closest we have to a Asian lead, but she's recurring guest cast status and she's Malaysian of Chinese descent.

What about Germans, Israeli's, Turkish, Saudi Arabian, etc?

What about Indigenous American's as the lead actor / Captain?

What about a Russian / Ukrainian lead actor?

I’m with you. This is exactly why we should think carefully about this stuff. That Trek has been progressive in the past doesn’t mean it can’t and shouldn’t improve.

You really should try out slide mounted micro red dots, you avoid the issue of having to transition your focus from rear site through the front blade and to the target.

Just a singular piece of glass with a red dot and a generous eye box to look through, it makes ALL the difference IMO and this trend of Micro Red Dots is here to stay, especially considering it's ridiculously long battery life at moderate brightness settings.

That's why for small arms, I prefer bolts, leave continuous beams for StarShips and other big platforms that have reactors and generous fuel supply.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahmoh_Penikett
I want Tahmoh Penikett as my Indigenous Captain.
But only if I can use his real name, that would be a contractual requirement for his character.

If "Will Smith" can be famous by being "Will Smith" on the 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'.

Then 'Tahmoh Penikett' can be the first StarShip Captain in Star Trek that uses his IRL name.

Speaking of XCV330, in one of my StarShip designs, I re-use a modernized version of the XCV330's Coleopteric Drive (Ring Drive) along with Traditional Nacelles.

NOTE: I prefer redundancy in my StarShips along with flexibility.

The Ring drive is more energy efficient when going in "Straight Lines" and is good for a StarFleet StarShip that is designed to explore the Andromeda Galaxy.

For a franchise about a United Earth being a founder of a galatic organisation and spacefleet, the human crews in Star Trek diversity on an ethnic and national scale could be a lot better, however sometimes there were too many humans. e.g DS9 and TNG Starfleet personnel were about 90% human, maybe the makeup budget was limited.
It cannot be that hard in this day and age to find actors outside of North America and the UK and make them part of the main cast.

I concur, my heart was broken when they killed off Captain Georgiou so early on.

I wish they let me have Captain Georgiou for one season before they killed her off and replace her with Mirror Georgiou.

Not a bad episode. That said, the whole "all dilithium went boom" story doesn't make a lot of sense. If all dilithium exploded, why does it still exist after "the burn"?

Though not perfect, I liked the Omega particle idea better, as it would explain why all other species which don't rely on matter/antimatter warp drive lost the ability to FTL travel.

After hitting Book's ship, crash-landing on a planet and being eaten by an alien creature, why is Burham still alive?

Weren't the Andorians' antennas moving the last time we saw them on Enterprise?

So the Federation/Starfleet "collapsed", but at least two starships were detected by the relay station. What gives?

Liked the new tech introduced and the relay station design.

Here's hoping future eps give us some background info on the geopolitics of the 32nd century.

He was also the Goa'uld Camulus in a few episodes of STARGATE SG-1's season 8.
And in Continuum!

- What eventually happened to the time suit? At first I thought Burnham programmed it to go into space and blow itself up (I distinctly heard her mention 'self destruct') but then it went through the wormhole! Was it supposed to return to its own time, THEN explode? Why would it do that? Wouldn't there be a risk of Control getting ahold of it?

Control didn't want the suit, it wanted the sphere data, which is in Discovery not the suit. It also needed to return to the 23rd century to set off the final Red signal that we see at the very end of Season 2.

They never said all the dilithium in the galaxy exploded.

It isn't completely gone, and those 2 starships were only within 800 Lightyears of the station.

Not all, just most.

Shields and resilient armor made of futuristic material. This a suit that travels through wormholes and at superluminal speeds.
Molly swallowed but didn't digest.
