Because...???

Not to sound too insensitive but this is a point of view I genuinely struggle with. So, 1000 years from Trek the Federation collapses and that makes all those stories meaningless? I mean, I know Trek is fantasy and people need the fantasy escapism type thing but is it really a place of "I can't enjoy other Trek because 1000 years later it will all collapse in on itself?"

Hey....pssst. I heard in another franchise, the Galactic Empire falls. Does that make the movies before that meaningless?

And why would you say the Republic deserved to fall?

Any faults it may have had were Palpatine's doing.
The Republic was ineffectual, and unable to challenge corruption within its own ranks.

Regardless, the question remains-since the Republic fell does that render stories any the Republic meaningless.

Again, that was only because Palpatine made it that way. It was all part of his plan.

I don't see why it calls the overall legitimacy of the Republic - or indeed *any* Republic - into question.

And how many stories like that have we had?

Plenty for my money. But, that doesn't change the nature of the question. Do those stories cease to matter because the Republic fell.

Palpatine manipulated the system. It was already starting to become corrupt.

I don't see why we are questioning the stories told in the Federation before it fell are somehow render mute because of a future catastrophe. It's like Pike accepting his fate.

We can't all be Pike.

In any case, you said that the Republic was an illegitimate organization because of the corruption caused by Palpatine, and therefore it deserved to fall. Do you believe the same here? Why do you think the Federation deserved to fall?

I just watched "That Hope Is You, Part I" a second time. I can safely say this is my favorite of DSC's three season premieres.

"The Vulcan Hello" was good, but Burnham made a really bone-headed choice. It took until "Context Is for Kings" before I was truly hooked. After seeing "Brother", I didn't warm up to the second season right away and didn't initially know what to make of such a drastic tonal shift. The second season grew on me like a creeper-heat.

But neither of those things happened this time. With the third season, it's more about walking the fine-line. Having hope when the galaxy threw you a curveball and rising up to the challenge. DSC mastered a tonal duality with "That Hope Is You" and it put me onboard with it right from the get-go.

It could've been Star Trek: Mad Max, but they didn't go that way.

the third season makes or breaks a Star Trek show

Pretty much true of The Next Generation. Not true of TOS (the classics started coming in the first season), DS9 (the classics started coming in the second season), or Voyager or Enterprise (I don't really see much of a difference in quality over the course of either series, just some lurching around for an ill-fitting identity).

Again, that was only because Palpatine made it that way. It was all part of his plan.

I don't see why it calls the overall legitimacy of the Republic - or indeed *any* Republic - into question.

Well before Palpatine, the Republic was infested with the child-kidnapping, slavery-tolerating, law-unto-themselves cult that was the Jedi.
