A new season, a new thread to discuss all the wonderous and incongruous starships and tech we'll see in the show!

Anticipate SPOILERS for every episode of Trek prior to the airdate of each new episode of Discovery. Plus lots of speculation, of course.

As always we will endeavor to stick to the starship designs themselves, the technology we see, and rationalizing them into what we've seen in other Trek thus far. It becomes tougher with every passing year and each new series, but Discovery's been a trove of references to past tech, which we've had fun trying to squish into what we knew of pre-TOS. Now though, with the show jumping further into the future than the franchise has ever really done, we'll be looking at stuff that MAY seem weird by any measure of Trek - hundreds of years after it SHOULD seem irrational. Looking forward to it!

Never thought we’d actually get to see an era AFTER the Enterprise J. Should be interesting.

So we see at least one wrecked Starfleet vessel with 'U.S.S.' and 'NCC' but the name and actual registry number inconveniently obscured or ripped away, so we don't have a clue about what time period the ship could have come from. The Burn could have happened any time between the start of the 25th century and the 33rd, unless something gets retconned. We also see another wrecked saucer with the bridge module separated like the inner disk of Discovery's saucer. Presumably this is another future Starfleet ship.

I like the look of Book's asymmetrical ship, and the spinner ship following him.

Well, based on producer comments, I'm pretty sure it happened during the 32nd Century.

They said they purposely put it in the late 32nd Century because it was beyond any time period (present and future) the previous shows had showed before, so they'd be free to do what they want. So I don't think they're going to directly contradict previous shows showing us an undamaged future.

The Enterprise-J came from a different timeline where the Sphere Builders expanded their territory from the 22nd century onwards to the 26th. It wasn’t the Prime timeline.

Doesn't mean a J will not exist, and that J can look similar.

Sometimes having a Marlena Moreau in every reality is a plus. Sometimes we miss out on alternatives that might well be easier on the eye...

I do as well. It's an intriguing design that I want to see more of.

The J was roughly based on the NX-01. In that timeline, all the Enterprises from the 1701 to the 1701-I were probably also variants of that design, unlike the prime timeline.

Bringing us up to date with the less-region-locked-still-official-preview-clip from the premiere episode:

I'm already fascinated with the future starship. That it looks like an extrapolated Discovery even in the vaguest of strokes is typical, the Enterprise-J was extrapolated from the NX-01 so the layman would make a visual connection (though most fans would argue that this was unnecessary). Will we ever see one whole, I wonder?

The 29th century Federation timeship Relativity’s registry number started with ‘NCV,’ not ‘NCC.’ If that wrecked starship was from the 32nd century, then either the VFX guys made a mistake (or more likely just overlooked the Relativity), or the NCV reg was only for timeships, not standard starships. Either way, I just find it odd that 32nd century starships are still using both a U.S.S. and an NCC prefix.

You think the NX-01 is not in the prime timeline? XD

All evidence points to similarities between timelines/universes.

    That’s not what I said.

All evidence points to the Sphere Builders taking over the Alpha Quadrant from the 22nd century to the 26th? Was that just happening in the background during TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY?

If the NX-01 existed in both timelines, why would it inspire the next 11 ship designs in one, but not in the other.

Evidence for similarities across timelines: Mirror universe, Kelvin timeline, TNG Parallels, TNG All Good Things, DS9 Visitor, VOY Timeless, VOY Endgame, PIC.

Because in the other timeline the Federation was in constant war. They based their designs on the most advanced ship they had when that war started. That’s not remotely the same as the prime universe.

Huh? I’m saying that there’s no similarities between the prime universe and the alternate universe where the Sphere Builders took over the Alpha Quadrant.

Sure, in the prime timeline, they never used the best ships to design the next ones...

    And why not?

Sounds sensible enough. Wartime, you skip the R&D you can't afford (and perhaps replace it with narrow-scoped battlefield experience), thus perpetuating the original and no doubt outdated ideas. Peacetime, you take a step back and come up with something more daringly different and ultimately better.

Where was it stated that they had a 400 year war? The J design can be an extension of the Akira as well :p
