News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Just read an interview with the head of the German engine drivers' union DLG on the problems the train attendants face these days (Link, German language).

Problems are with people not wearing masks, some having Doctor's notes (which often are fake, as you can download those from the internet, but it's hard for the attendant to tell on the spot), and some simply refusing to wear masks.
There's supposed to be added security personell to handle these, and enforce the new minimum fine of € 50,-, but there aren't enough of them, and most of the time the attendants are left alone with the problem.
Also, a lot of those people refusing to wear masks have them and put them on when they see an attendant just to take them off again once the "coast is clear", and the attendants have to deal with those and with the justified complaints of those passengers who don't want to sit around with a passenger who doesn't wear a mask.

Another problem is that the German railway company Die Bahn has not put the wearing of a mask into the list of conditions upon purchase of a ticket. Without that, the attendants don't even have legal standing to enforce the fines or kick passengers without a mask from the train at the next station. The union has been demanding this for months, but Die Bahn has so far refused to do it for whatever reason. Of course, the management is quite comfortably working from home during all this.

i'm a regular traveller (1st class where it should be worse) and it's way better than in the bvg (the cops started to pick up people there, though) - i've never seen more that two maskenmuffel* in a cariage but some of course employ 'tactical drinking'.

... btw, it's deutsche bahn

Businesses expecting employees to act as bouncers is ridiculous, reckless and putting them in danger. They should hire actual bouncers. With the night clubs closed they’re all looking for work. Big 300 pound muscle head says wear mask, you wear mask.

There are still below the nose maskers out there. I don’t get that. All the discomfort with none of the protection.

My area is starting to feel like things are getting back to normal. We're still taking heavy precautions, and most things are open such as theatres, restauraunts, and gyms, but with modifications. In certain cases, compromises have to be made in order to try to get back to the most normal we can get.

One of these is concerts, and locally a festival organization is trying a bit of an experiment using the drive-in model. It's still going to be a live in-person concert with the artists appearing on-location, but everyone attending is required to stay in their vehicles unless going to the washroom. Headliners Serena Ryder and Hawksley Workman.

The Ontario government today announced a four-week "pause" on relaxing restrictions, due to our increasing case count.

It's not a rollback, yet, so everything that is currently open will continue to stay open for now... including schools, which for many people started today.

So Ontario today announced 700 new cases, which is the largest single-day total we've ever reported, including during the peak of our initial wave in the spring. This has prompted the provincial government to admit that we are now firmly in our second wave. No lockdowns yet, but some tighter restrictions on bars and restaurants went into effect on the weekend. Toronto, one of the hardest-hit areas in the province, is encouraging residents to cancel their social bubbles, and socialize only with members of their own household.

Quebec, one of our neighbouring provinces, is also seeing a significant increase in cases. They will be reimposing restrictions on three regions on Thursday, as those regions go into "red alert". (No kidding, that's actually what they're calling it. Well, OK, probably alerte rouge, but you get the idea.)

Due to rising numbers of new infections lately, Germany is putting back limitations on gatherings. Public gatherings are once more limited to a maximum of 50 people, private gatherings are limited to 25 persons. These may get even stricter depending on local numbers.

One of the consequences for me personally is that the ComicCon Germany in Stuttgart, which I've been attending every year, was postponed from the end of November of this year all the way to end of November of next year. Considering it's been an annual event up to now, you could say they just called it off for this year, except that sold tickets are still good for next year.

Son went back to school yesterday, two days a week until, at least, Christmas break. We have a whole production we put on when he gets home. Spray shoes and backpack with Lysol, school clothes go into their own bag to be washed separately, and he hops immediately in the shower.

It's be easier to just send him out in a bio-suit....or one of those human size hamster balls.

So the provincial government has officially reinstated some restrictions in the three main hotspots of the province: Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa. They're calling it "Phase 2 light": indoor dining, gyms, and movie theatres will all close, but schools and daycares will remain open. As well, residents across the province are being urged to stay home except for essential trips, and gathering limits are being rolled back to 25 people outdoors or 10 people indoors.

We have also been advised to limit our Thanksgiving celebrations/dinners this weekend to only those within our own households. Sadly, from what I hear from my co-workers, a lot of people are going to be ignoring this advice. :(
