What always gets me is that many claim that they felt some persecution for being geeks while younger, but can turn around and be even worse to a group they see as beneath them. In fact some seem to actually get a thrill out of it.

Exactly. I was getting my ass-torn open for liking Dragon Ball and Power Rangers in fifth grade and that certainly helped teach me to not treat people poorly.

I think many bullies are/were bullied themselves (by parents, older brothers, etc.). Some do it so they don't get bullied. It's a strange concept, but some people seem to think that whatever they went through 'hardened' them in some way. That's why dads who were abused often become abusive dads as well.

Unfortunately, some (many/most?) abuse victims conclude from their abuse that part of life is to abuse others, so they find someone to punch down on.

It's sadly common that one persecuted group persecutes another, perhaps because it makes them feel empowered in an "at least I'm not one of them" way.

The frustrating part is the shocking lack of self-awareness on display, though, and it is no comfort to marginalized people to be told "well, it is what it is" when we're the ones receiving violent attacks.
I can't say I didn't expect the worst when this was announced. I'm just tired. I get this shit from customers at my job, I get from strangers, I get it from my own family. I've loved Star Trek my whole life and they finally add a trans character, but I don't even get to enjoy that because of other Star Trek fans. Fans who despite claiming to love a franchise about how much better we are by working together and celebrating our diversity saw that and decided that queer people just aren't welcome in that future.

Cishet is only a slur in the imaginations of bigots upset over nothing. And yes, as a trans person I get so say if someone is being transphobic or not because I have first hand experience with it on a daily basis for my entire life. It’s sort of makes you an expert.
Wrong, and not just wrong, but wrong on multiple levels.

Because I have in fact seen that label used directly as a slur to attack others,

Further, no, you don't get to declare some random person you don't know is transphobic because they don't like people using a word to describe them, that has in fact been used as a slur before.

And to reiterate a final point, if you continue to insist that you won't respect others wishes in concerns to what they don't want to be called, why should they respect yours in concerns to things you don't want to be called?

Cis isn't a slur. I don't know what else to tell you. But it looks like you actually want to use a slur and are trying to justify it which given your posting history wouldn't be a shock.

God, I know the feeling. I got crap at work from customers, co-workers and then of course family, too. I'm still not out to nieces I see all the time precisely because of threats made by my SiL. Then I have to turn around and be cordial to her. Fucking hell, I'd really like to be able to wear make up more often. :|

It's a word invented by people for whom Spanish was not their primarily language. A solution looking for a problem. A badge to show just how up to date and concerned one might be.

Who decides whether a word is needed or not? Are you the word police?

If Trill society has fallen apart... It might be impossible to get a simbiont without hunting for one in the wild, and that's what this kid is doing when they run afoul of the time travelers.

If the Trill have been knocked back to the stoneage, then the simbionts may have decided to go on holiday for a thousand years until the Trill reinvent indoor plumbing.

I'd like a non-joined Trill main character at some point in a Star Trek show. Only a small fraction of them are joined.
