What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Omega_molecule

This was also one case revealed in VOY where Starfleet suppressed information, so classifying the mirror universe, the Disco and the DASH drive is not without precedent.

This all reminds me of the background plot to the aborted animated series Star Trek: Final Frontier...

In this series, the Federation would have fought a war with the Romulans, ending in the 2460s. This war would have been started by unknown persons using a surprise attack of Omega particle detonations. Vast areas of the galaxy would be considered impassable due to these detonations. This causes a split between the two halves of the Federation. During the Federation-Romulan War, Qo'noS was taken over by the Romulan Star Empire, Andoria was destroyed, and Vulcans left the Federation (they were negotiating reunification).

"The Burn" sounds like a lame/cool nickname that Michael Burnham tried out in high school. It didn't stick.

Seriously though, I really hope it has nothing to do with her.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does. The Burnham haters will not be happy this season. Even if she has nothing to do with the Burn she will somehow play a great role in restoring the Federation. In the original season 3 trailer the Federation dude tells Burnham "That hope is you", which is also the title of the first episode. For the sanity of Burnham haters I hope the dude meant Discovery not Burnham.

You have it exactly backward. That stuff is red meat for the folks who get truly emotionally worked up about the character, and it's literally money in the pockets of Doomcock and Midnight's Edge.

Maybe the Burn is the result of the Hobus supernova. Spock did say that it threatened the entire galaxy.
Possible, but I don't think so. They would've had 800 years of knowing what's coming and 800 years to prepare. The trailer strongly implies The Burn caught them off-guard.

Interestingly, that was what was implied in the 2009 movie, but retconned in PIC that everyone knew it was coming for years. Sounds like they're taking that former road again, but for a different phenomenon.

Kurtzman's comment about the Burn:

What happened to the Federation didn’t happen because of the Federation collapsed in on itself because of disagreement or strife. That’s not what happened. The Federation was as strong as ever. Obviously, something cataclysmic went down that changed everything.

Yeah, that's why it's another bullshit children's story. I think @cultcross called this one.

Yeah, I'm sure part of an effort not to be too close to Andromeda, though I seriously doubt Discovery will be anything like it in tone and it won't have cheesy acting and production.

RAMA

Sub-space decaying or withering, along with the Omega Particles, could also explain it. Maybe the core-worlds are now connected by wormhole, with other travel being fusion-Impulse STL - not enough to hold anything much together, not in a quick time frame.

It used to be that people would try to disguise their schadenfreude. C'est la vie.
Not when it comes to the crowd who complain about "SJWs!" non-stop. They're a whole different type of category and they deserve no consideration whatsoever.

This isn't like The Old Days where they'd at least try to hide their sexist, racist bigotry. Now they're out in the open. And because of this, I don't see any reason to bother with pretense on my end either. They deserve to be called out.

So, instead of Warp we get the Iconian Gateways? or other types of FTL.
And just to put it out there.. Its been Millions of years of intelligent civilizations coming, peaking, declining, and extinction. Not one of them found out about Omega Molecule and detonated some?? Call BS on that..

Not in this galaxy (at least in known space), but it's a big universe...

Agreed, but the venn diagram between those people and normal viewers unhappy with the handling of Burnham as a character is not a circle.

I know the difference between the two and have said for a while that I only have a problem with the bigots and those who cite Doomcock like Holy Scripture.

To be fair, I'm not too happy that the Alt-Right __-ist Posters have driven other posters off this forum and, in more extreme cases, off this board. I'm not happy about that at all. What the Hell does that say about this place that people feel uncomfortable about posting here just for being who they are?

What kind of situation does it create that we can't hope for Burnham to do all the great things that Kirk or Picard or Sisko or other characters do without them suddenly descending down and saying they don't want Burnham, who's the main protagonist of the series, doing Main Protagonist things? The show is going to be about who makes a difference because who makes a difference is where the real story is.
