Eh an all-female crew would be just as "blah" to me as an all-male crew. Not a fan of mono gender casts.
But I wouldn't have minded any of those characters taking Chekotay's place.
Kira would have been too headstrong though, and I feel some elements in the Voyager writing staff would have just made her perpetually wrong so that Jane way could be right.
Ro would have had similar problems, but since she was originally supposed to be on VOY, I'd say Ro.

There's also Future Admiral Janeway, Borg Janeway, Nicole Janeway, Biomimetic Janeway, Warship Voyager Janeway, "Photons Be Free" Janeway, Klingon Janeway, Katrine Janeway.

Have the whole ship filled with Janeways :bolian:

And SFDebris' Psycho Jane way, who's my favourite Janeway.

You could get an all-female Voyager main crew by rewriting the first episodes succinctly.

Captain: Janeway
Security Chief: Seska seems pretty trustworthy at first. After that... maybe Telsia Murphy
Operations Officer: Lyndsay Ballard... Seven of Nine can take over this role when introduced in the fourth season sometime after Ballard's death.
Chief Engineer: Torres, pretty much following the order of events in Parallax
Flight Controller: Veronica Stadi. Paris dies instead.
Chief Medical Officer: The EMH is knocked offline during Caretaker, but the head nurse T'Ral survives and uses her Vulcan expertise to ably do the job, while training Kes as a replacement nurse.

and, as for First Officer:

... the ship may not have one. There are no high-ranking officers in the Maquis should Chakotay have perished. Maybe Ann Smithee (who seems to have died in Caretaker) was an officer of some rank and can take over the job, although I'm pretty much inventing a character at this point. Practically, Janeway might rely on Lieutenant Stadi to pull double-duty as her first officer, and keep that chair pretty much empty. Maybe Stadi gets a promotion, and someone else (Mariah Henley? Tal Celes?) takes over at the Conn.

Yeah, that sounds good.

So, the cast can be:
Starring Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway

Also starring:
Iris Bahr as Ensign Telsia Murphy (1996-2001)
Alicia Coppola as Lt. Commander Veronica Stadi
Roxann Dawson as Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres
Martha Hackett as Ensign Seska (1995-1996)
Jennifer Lien as Kes (1995-1997)
Zoe McLellan as Crewman Tal Celes
Tami Peterson as Nurse T'Ral
Kim Rhodes as Ensign Lyndsay Ballard (1995-1997)
Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine (1997-2001)

Kes can also fill in for Neelix's role as Ambassador to the Delta Quadrant, under the assumption that he doesn't survive Caretaker or just up and leaves early on.

I thought I'd go in another direction and opt for the overlooked crewmembers of Voyager under Janeway's command, but decided to restrict the choices to those who appeared onscreen and were given a name, just to make it that little bit trickier:

Commanding Officer: Captain Janeway (Human)
First Officer: Lieutenant Stadi (Betazoid)
Flight Control Officer: "Crewman" Henley (Human)
Engineering Officer: Lieutenant Nicoletti (Human)
Operations Officer: Crewman Celes (Bajoran)
Security/Tactical Officer: Ensign Golwat (Bolian)
Medical Officer: Ensign Jurot (Betazoid)
Science Officer: "Ensign" Seska (Cardassian) [She was in a blue uniform her first appearance, that counts, lol]

There are probably a few more obvious background/recurring characters to be used, but when trying to get some species diversity in there it ain't easy.

I wasn't wild about Shelby in TNG. While I think Riker should have departed, I'd have preferred Data to replace him.

But I could see Shelby as Janeway's first. Janeway's a strong enough captain to keep her in check, but Shelby would not be afraid to speak her mind. The two would balance well.

The real choice is obvious, and everyone here has overlooked it: Naomi Wildman. She's already the unofficial Captain's Assistant, and Janeway has changed her mind a time or two, based on Naomi's input.

Naomi, as the only person born on the ship (leaving Miral aside since she wasn't born until about 2 minutes before the series ended), would have absorbed Starfleet into every facet of her life, both knowledge-based and social-based. She's the only one on board besides the Doctor who accepts Seven of Nine unconditionally, thus demonstrating an unwillingness to be converted to the prejudices of some other members of the crew.

And it was inevitable anyway. If the series had continued, even the Borg baby would some day have outranked Harry Kim. :p

Time Walker, Bry was just wondering why I didn't like Shelby for Picard. Part of it is she just annoyed the @$&*% out of me. But Janeway, unlike Picard, is in a habit of steamrolling anyone who has an opinion opposite hers, once she gets her blood up. Shelby, with her courage, strong will, and stubbornness, will be a lot harder to steamroll than Chakotay was.

Ah ok, I see what you mean now. Thanks for clearing that up :bolian:

With the discussions going on elsewhere in the VOY board I think I might have to switch from Kira and go to Ro instead, the pair would definitely have a far more tense and uneasy relationship than Commander Doormat...sorry Chakotay

I would agree with Shelby being a good choice. I don't think Voyager's writers would have done her credit, and probably would have made her a scapegoat half the time.

First officers seem to be a mixed bag.
Spock was the perfect counterpoint to Kirk.
Riker's unwillingness to move on to his own command was jarringly unrealistic. And with a strong and versatile lead in Picard, he sometimes felt a bit redundant.
Kira's fiery nature and complex relationship with Sisko was great. She was Trek's first female character whose potential was used as opposed to wasted. Michelle Forbes did DS9 a huge favor just by refusing to be on it.
The writers of Voyager treated Chakotay's character even worse than Harry's, mainly because they didn't want Janeway to seem weak. So, she was a borderline Bligh at times.

Seven. I'd want the most knowledge available if I were Janeway.
But if Janeway were incapacitated, would you want Seven as either Acting Captain or the actual Captain, if Janeway were to die?

Seven has knowledge assimilated from the Borg, but she lacks a hell of a lot of other knowledge. The Borg don't know everything Starfleet, and there are many cultural and social things they simply didn't care about, so Seven doesn't think they're important.

Kira, Shelby and maybe even T'Pol may be technically better first officers (being experienced and all), but I voted Ro because I think it'd make for the best show. The uneven way Janeway was often written though, she could've used a councilor...

Janeway would probably work best with T'Pol as her first officer with them both having a love of science and a lot of appreciation for following principles and protocols while acknowledging that they could also involve some exceptions.

i'd go with Sonya Gomez from TNG. Perhaps start her off as a lieutenant and then bump her up to lieutenant commander after getting the XO gig. She'd be a bit more gung-ho than Janeway, more willing to leap without looking. She'd learn from Janeway and vice-versa.
