Having a good time? What madness.
I had a great time at all the ones I went to. Nitpicking and all. Great fun.Having a good time? What madness.

See, at cons I can believe people are actually fans. Online, less demonstrable.
To me, it's more like we can have a conversation about things we don't like and things we do like. I've certainly hung out with enough fans to know that eventually the conversation rolls around to the positives of the show/film/franchise and doesn't perseverate on all the negative again and again and again. Or, if we did, someone would us out on our BS.Agreed. I'm pretty sure people don't go to the effort to spend lots of money and drive long distances to go to a Star Trek convention just to be a troll.
AdamConventions cost time and money. It's stupid to go to a convention and spend $50 on something you can't stand.
I went to Super Megafest in 2002. It was a Star Trek / Other Stuff Hybrid Convention. I got to meet Walter Keonig, Arlene Martel... and Adam West!!!
Have to use the Exclamation Point. POW!!! '60s Batman isn't my favorite, I prefer the Batman comics of the '70s-'90s and the Tim Burton Films (and -- Unpopular Opinion -- I like those movies a Hell of lot better than the Dark Knight Trilogy!). But still. Adam West! And I get a kick out of his Batman in small doses.
Anyway, back to Trek. Meeting Walter Keonig was interesting. And meeting Alrene Martel was an unexpected highlight. For those who don't know, she played T'Pring in "Amok Time" (TOS).
If you note the date: 2002. More specifically it was Fall 2002. Enterprise was the current Star Trek series and Nemesis was the upcoming film. I didn't even talk about them once. It didn't even occur to me. I was there for TOS actors. I was there for Batman. I was there for the stuff I liked.
Yeah if only you'd have listened to some of the stuff they'd had to say, and not just looked at them...Lol! You’ve obviously never been to a Star Trek convention. I’m proud to say I’ve been to several. I’ve seen Nichelle Nichols, Deforest Kelly and Johnathan Frakes to name a few. Those were the pure star trek conventions and yeah we argue and bitch about these things.

I think the Internet has eroded that difference so that being amiable is a rather nonstarter in the Internet world. Nor is it sufficient to simply ignore a work of art one does not enjoy. There is a very big difference between amiable nit-picking and hating on a work of art.

I think it can be fun in person. I think the impersonal nature of the Internet removes any emotion so that nitpicking doesn't come across with love or affection but as hatred, abusive and cruel.Which is a shame, because nit-picking something you love is fun if done with a spirit of affection! I love nitpicking DS9 as I rewatch it with my partner.

There is a difference between nitpicking a show that you like and going out of your way to find fault with a show that you don’t.
when I’m nitpicking things like tech that’s exactly what I’ve always done. Unfortunately the tech in shows like discovery went out of their way to make nearly every thing different from the original series. The warmth and light look of TOS was replaced with a dark metal holographic mess. I’m also a stickler for set continuity. It doesn’t have to be perfect but they can’t even make the view screens square and not be windows.
Having just watched Picard, I think I liked the uniforms (the one Riker was wearing). Very minimal and TNG era imho. What I didn't like was how dark and non-ergo the bridges & consoles were. It was very new Trek-esque. Spotlights everywhere, generally dark, really didn't make sense to me in terms of function / form.
