Mariner's fucking awesome. I've seen three episodes so far and she's become one of my favorite Trek characters, period. She has a very Terminal Lance thing going on that I dig.

then Lower Decks and Discovery don't count. they are largely an afront to what Trek is about regardless of the fact that the people that made then can slap the logo on them. (Only my opinion)
This keeps getting stated without any evidence. Is this like the obscenity rule where it can't be defined but the judge knows it when he sees it?
I don't like a lot of things about DSC but it is Star Trek and it is canon. What we decide is an "affront" to canon or continuity is irrelevant to a series' official status within the franchise.
I'm not disputing what is canon. I mean that's the whole point of slapping the logo on it. TLJ might be canon in SW, but that is an affront to SW. I'm not denying what the lawyers might say is part of property and what isn't
Even in spirit it's basically TOS swashbuckling with a bigger budget and using the dark overtones of the Dominion War on DS9. My problems with the show are aesthetic and with writing like most fans who have issues with the series. The spirit and feel are recognizable Trek, just darker because - as much as it pains me - campier, lighter Trek just isn't in vogue at the moment except in animation.
Being dark doesn't mean i'll like it. I was so looking forward to every episode. I thought Pike was great. Even Spock was good (until he shaved and then he looked and acted goofy. I (for the most part, think that "New Eden" and "Magic that would make the sanest man go mad" are pretty damn good (not flawless) episodes. All the stories we've seen on LD are fine at base as well... but man these shows, canon or not, just don't feel right to me
"New Eden" was peak DSC. It felt like TOS and TNG and Pike behaved like an old school Star Trek captain.
Yes, I had a few quibbles with it to be sure (especially Burnham) but the episode was not only good, it "felt" like Trek, and Mount has all the best qualities of a captain

TMP is the most un-Trek like part of the franchise in some ways. Sterile. Bland colors. Few emotions even from human characters.
