I'm sorry for the delay, but good things come to those who wait, I guess:

Welcome to the August 2020 Art Challenge — the 189th edition, for everyone who's taking count. That's 17 years of art challenges, with a majority of them focussing on Trek. Well, this month shall look a little different, because the theme is called Not Trek.

If you're anything like me then Star Trek isn't the only sci-fi universe you feel comfortable in. Well, this month is all about that. Basically the only requirement for your entry is that it somehow features a sci-fi entity other than Star Trek. Maybe you are passionate about Star Wars, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Red Dwarf, Doctor Who or The Orville. Or are you more into obscure stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Odyssey 5, Charlie Jade or Sliders? Anything goes, as long as its within the genre.

Here are the rules (from the Art Challenge Guidelines):
    • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
    • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
    • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
You have until the end of the month to come up with your art and post it in this thread. Let me know if you have a question or need more time. Have fun!

Yeah, I really hope it will. I'm already racking my brains over what sci-fi universe I want to use. The possibilities are practically endless …

I don’t think Sliders is that obscure.

More obscure than Star Wars for sure. But yeah, I think it has a significant fanbase. It's all subjective of course. I love Sliders (at least the first couple of seasons), but it never really hit it off with the rest of the audience here in Germany, as far as I can tell.

    - Me, too. I've just got out of the bath (where I do all my thinking), and this is the list I came up with:

Farscape (this is what instantly popped into my mind when I first saw your challenge theme ideas in the voting thread), Ulysses 31, G-Force: Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman), Flight of the Navigator, Asgardians of the Galaxy (because I can't decide between Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy), Transformers (UK G1 comic and toys), Zoids (UK comic and toys), John Carter of Mars (Disney film, because I still haven't got around to reading the books), Jupiter Ascending, Primeval, Day of the Triffids (the nightmare inducing 1980s BBC TV series), and The Tripods (an even worse nightmare inducing UK TV series - I can't believe this was for kids!).
I'm going to have to do some whittling down... :D

Some awesome stuff on your short list! Loved “Thor” and “GotG” as well. “John Carter” was just amazing in terms of world building; really liked the soundtrack, too. And “Flight of the Navigator” is a movie I loved as a kid; as I guess many people did.

Maybe the idea could be to combine some of them into one piece?

@Finn, I would love for you to enter one of these contests again with one of your paintings. What other sci-fi stuff do you enjoy besides Trek?

I have settled on a Babylon 5 idea using a set I built last year =)

Star Wars, Stargate SG-1 (I’d love a rewatch), Sliders (early seasons of course).

This sounds really awesome! I think Babylon 5 and your art style could be a perfect match. What set was that?

I'd love to see someone do something with Sliders. I'm actually tempted to do it myself. But Stargate would be nice as well. I love some of the designs they had on that show, even if I was never a huge fan of the show itself.

Just curious, does it have to be based upon a "professional" entertainment property backed by the film/TV industry or major publishing houses?

You mean like fan films or fan fiction? Either way, this can be as open as necessary as far as I'm concerned. If it's sci-fi it's fine by me. Does that help?

I built an Omega bridge based off the Babylon 5 Command Center since they redressed that often for the bridges anyway.

I wish I could draw a comic showing the original sliders landing home in 2020, not recognizing home with the iPhones, Starbucks lattes, COVID-19, and Trump and deciding to do another slide.

I can see Professor calling all the folks walking around on their phones “blithering idiots”.

Any alternate reality has got to be better than 2020.

If 2020 was an episode of Sliders, it would feature Mallory having a tinder date, Wade starting a podcast, Rembrandt managing a K-Pop band and the professor finding a cure for coronavirus all in the span of one episode before they left for the next dimension.
