Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I like how Ensign Rutherford's eye implant is designed with a pixelated pupil (which I had some fun recreating as an animated GIF). Its design isn't necessarily harking back to the aesthetic of The Next Generation – which never really featured many LCD-like displays, IIRC – but fits nicely with the idea that the show might also be spoofing the 80s and 90s, the era of the ubiquitous Casio watch and the Game Boy. I'm curious if there'll be more such nods to the time The Next Generation was produced in.

I haven't seen this posted yet, so...

The Star Trek on CBS Twitter account recently shared a couple of character promos, one for Ensign Tendi and another for Ensign Rutherford. In case there were any lingering doubts, the Tendi promo confirms the character is a medic.

Additionally, Titmouse announced a Lower Decks t-shirt club. They did something similar for a few seasons of The Venture Bros. and the designs were all pretty cool and thematically tied in some way to their corresponding episode. It seems like a similar setup this time around: one new t-shirt each week after a new episode releases, with the option of purchasing shirts individually or as part of a subscription package that includes every design.

First time I've seen first names for these characters. I don't think anyone suspected "D'Vana Tendi" to have more than one name, especially since she seems to be the first Orion canonically to do so. There was some question about "Sam Rutherford" and whether he might not have one and how it would tie to his cyborg nature (a la the still mononym'd Airiam). Glad that's settled.

I like the shirts, and if the show doesn't suck I will definitely try and get one. It's a shame they only seem to be available in North America, though.

I love that they are paying homage to the original Animated Series with this design. Makes me wonder if the show itself will include some sort of callback to it …

Yeah, I already subscribed lol with taxes and since shipping is free, it’s fewer than $18/shirt, so I decided to jump on it. I hope this show doesn’t stink lol (but, it seems in my wheelhouse of humor, so I assume I’ll probably enjoy it)

New feature on Lower Decks/Mike McMahan from Animation Magazine: https://www.animationmagazine.net/s...ond-live-action-in-mike-mcmahans-lower-decks/

Plenty of interesting details and behind-the-scenes info, but this statement from McMahan really stood out to me:

“In this show, you get everything you want from Star Trek,” says the exec producer. “Mysteries, adventure, ethics, honesty and morality. We are very careful not to break anything. We are definitely not making fun of Star Trek and you can definitely fit Lower Decks into a proper timeline of all the other shows and movies in the franchise.”

That certainly sounds promising.

I really like that bit from McMahan: “But I gotta say, if anyone wants Mariner to show up on their live-action Star Treks, you’ve got to have Tawny.”

If it's true that McMahan has modeled Mariner the character after Newsome the actress then it only makes sense that she would portray her live action counterpart. Judging from that brief appearance in the Comic-Con@Home livestream Tawny Newsome seemed like a genuinely nice person. So yeah, seeing her appear on Picard or a Short Trek would be awesome.

So who is going to be our designated review thread maker?
Good question. If no-one steps up before Thursday I'll just go ahead and post it myself. :)
