Lower Decks Trailer Analysis

You're got to be kidding me. When people ask me what "mock outrage" is, from now on I'll point to this post as a textbook example.
Mock outrage would be me making a big deal about how this show doesn't respect Gene Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek and that Star Trek has never stooped this low.

No. Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek was very flawed and the franchise has stooped lower than this series. This is simply being disappointed at how uninteresting and uninspired everything looks. There is nothing in this preview that I haven't already seen in all the other satires and parodies that have existed for over half a century. I would rather binge Thundercats Roar! than watch a full episode of this. At least Roar! presented itself as a unique take on the franchise, not an in-canon story that we're supposed to accept could happen in the original series.

If the show only serves to make Star Trek look more stupid and dumb, it's not complimenting Star Trek.

A. Our leads are ungrateful
B. Everyone is disdainful towards others
C. The crew play around with dangerous weapons
D. They care more about their position than the lives of their crew mates
E. They come off as passive in uncertain situations

These are horrible people.

I'm not being a hater or anything, but I'm really curious how these conclusions came about in such a short trailer.

A. Who is ungrateful? The leads are Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford, and all seem excited to be where they are (Tendi and Boimler especially). Mariner, I suppose, doesn't like her duties, but that was one snippet and she seems pretty easygoing and joyful throughout the rest.

B. Mariner and Boimler have an antagonistic friendship, for sure, but I don't see any disdainment. Boimler is ambitious, and Mariner is teasing him over it. Elsewhere, we see Shaxs praise Rutherford and perhaps a bit of grumpiness from T'Ana towards Tendi.

C. Yes, Mariner misused a phaser in one scene, but I think that was a one-time joke. I don't know if they intend to have her as the inept one. That seems more Boimler's archetype (although it's good that they aren't pigeonholing anyone).

D. Boimler wants to be Captain, and perhaps Tendi wants advancement as well. I think we're supposed to surmise that Rutherford (despite high praise) and Mariner (despite harsh duty assignments) are generally comfortable as Ensigns and that is where the dichotomy lies. But the show will likely be about Boimler overcoming his faults with overambition, but I don't think (aside from Mariner's carelessness) anyone will break the Starfleet tradition of selfless service when it comes to saving civilians or each other. We see a clip of the ship under heavy attack and the Lower Deckers (and Shaxs) doing their bestest to save a slimy Boimler from some malady. They're going out of their way to save one of their own, the one character who might be the most selfish (and that episode likely plays into his journey).

E. Of course they're a little passive, they're rookies. But, there is a lot of action to be seen, and they are front and center in most of it. It may have been a bit passive to showcase the jokes, but clearly there will be tons of action in this series, and our heroes will be apart of it. (But, yes, I expect a few Zeppo moments of lower deck passivity during tense moments on the Bridge. That's the fun of this idea).

Maybe it'll blow. Who knows at this point?

We should get down to an earnest debate of the first trailer by the time the fifth episode airs.

You’ve seen two minutes of unrelated clips out of nearly 300 minutes. Might want to throttle back until we see more of it.

A) Grateful for what? Where's the point in the trailer where being greatful was required but not displayed?

B) Who is "everyone" and how were they "disdainful"? I saw that Mariner characters taking the good natured piss out of our wannabe captain character, I saw the Caitian doctor be brusque to green girl during a state of emergency, and then ... what? Where's that disdain? The only kinda serious incident is that one crew man calling green girl "lower decks". And last time I checked, one guy falls a bit short of "everyone".

C) The phaser shot at the end, given that she thought it was on stun and he was behind a force field, is clearly a stupid prank on a colleague. We also only see one person be irresponsible with equipment, and that's Mariner (phaser and shields). So that might be a deliberate character flaw to be mellowed and worked on during the run of the show.

D) What are we basing this on? There's one character shown to want to better himself (so he's the equivalent to the guy trying to be noticed by senpai Riker for a promotion on the original Lower Decks) and one character calls green girl "lower decks". One seems to be, once again, a character flaw or goal, and we don't know the context of the second. And I didn't see anyone jeopardizing their colleagues' lives for career advancement.

E) ???? ... ?! ... ???..? The fuck's that supposed to mean? Where is this assessment coming from?

The main character seems quite annoying, the voice really doesn't fit either, very masculine sounding. Seems ok and actually the design of the ship is growing on me.

Was that trailer supposed to be funny and elicit laughs? Cause I didn't chuckle once

And an excellent writer along with the rest of the staff.

Given the writing is probably the biggest flaw on both shows, I beg to differ.

Yeah. We already have Discovery for that.

Well said. Assuming you meant horribly unlikeable and/or nothing characters.
