Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I don’t follow, sorry; what do you mean?
What's the harm if the series goes the Orville direction? Or a completely new direction?
Now, Orville is hit and miss for me but there is a huge appeal. Maybe Lower Decks will find such a niche?

As someone who really dislikes the Orville, I hope it doesn’t go too far down that road. Either way, I’m looking forward to finding out.
Don't worry, nothing about this looks nearly as good as The Orville. Not a surprise.

"We live on a spaceship." Wonder where they cribbed that from?

Well, as somebody who doesn’t like the Orville it’s a personal hope that it doesn’t go too far down the Orville route. As I didn’t enjoy the Orville, I’d be unlikely to enjoy this. If it goes down the entirely new route, then great. I might like that, I might not. There’s certainly no harm in any of it, it’s just a personal and subjective view.

Screencaps suggest conflicting registry numbers: 77567 vs. 75567...

Then again, that shuttle might belong to another starship. We'll find out, right?

There's also a cribbed Rick and Morty alien creature bit in there too. But whatever, it looks fun and silly and I'm in. Only because I'm super tired of dead serious Trek with hints of melodrama (looking at you Disco and PIC).

I know I could be watching The Orville but I don't care for Seth McFarlane or his TNG fan fic.

Sesame Street? A Beatles song?

At least the "by the book" guy doesn't come across as Rimmer...

But there's something apocryphal about the lower decks crew yelling "Hey green girl"... but this cartoon is a parody.

Before the 1:15 mark there's some generic American Dad style humor. It's probably the worst moment of the teaser.

By 1:26 they're breaking the fourth wall in telling us the obvious (since the title of the show didn't do it on its own?) And it can't be a great if the Enterprise never had episodes with its lower decks fixing everything... again, it's a parody...

The blast shield bit was funny (I was chuckling a bit throughout, TBH) but it has a partial Orville vibe. At least Orville didn't do it. Again, being a parody, her child-like enthusiasm is more engaging than anything else.

"We live on a space ship. Nobody is dying from a spear wound." The first half is a bit lax but the second half changes and improves the context.

I get a partial Futurama vibe as well.

1:57 has a vibe of "Homeboys in Outer Space", only taken to the next level. :D

When I use "vibe", think "homage" or "influence" and not "lame copycat".

I'm actually stoked for this. "Hey green lady" line aside.

Aren't the makers of Rick and Morty involved in this? That would make cribbing impossible, if it's their signature style?

Well Orville is generally accepted to be garbage by all but it's miniscule cadre of an ever-shrinking fan base (If the rapidly diminishing ratings and brute force ejection from FOX are any indication). This is in a climate of probably some of the best science fiction ever aired (Devs, Watchmen, Westworld, Expanse, Discovery, Picard, Legion, etc) so it suffers even more from the comparison.

Will Lower Decks reach the audience its trying to reach with CBSAA's intelligent decision to appeal to a wider age group? Who knows.

RAMA

I think the Orville fandom is doing fine.
