I've always wondered, was Delenn's transformation a purely creative choice, or was it also to get Mira Furlan in less complex makeup?
There was always going to be a change at the end of season 1, though the initial idea was that Delenn would be a male character (hence the even heavier appliances & deep voice in the initial cut of 'The Gathering') and the transformation would be a gender swap.I've always wondered, was Delenn's transformation a purely creative choice, or was it also to get Mira Furlan in less complex makeup?
Usually when a character with heavy makeup suddenly transforms into something that requires a lot less make up, I assume that's the case.According to this link, the actress hated the make up:

Ironically, the makeup being less encompassing made it take longer to apply than the whole-head look, especially when they refined it in season three to get a smoother blend between the bone and her head.Usually when a character with heavy makeup suddenly transforms into something that requires a lot less make up, I assume that's the case.
Given how carefully they established different species were not sexually compatible they couldn’t have had a romance story without a transformation.

Which episode have you made it to?
Hunter, Prey. And now Londo’s all like “Please still like me! Be my friend.” Seriously dude.
Ivanova’s sex dance with that ambassador was hilarious! “Next time my way.”
I do feel sad for Delenn for losing her Minbari rank but it’s really sweet that Lennier is sticking by her side.
Bruce Boxleitner is a poor man's Michael Douglas. I don't get the appeal of him at all. He's the equivalent of a wet blanket for me.
I....Jerry Doyle?
I could have said Claudia Christian, but I've seen Star hyke.
Right up there with 'Naked Space'I....
What the...????

The evolution of the relationship between Londo and Vir is one of the best parts of the show. Vir's arc is one of the better jobs of character development in the series.
