What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

This should be quite controversial: I think Tuvok was a better Vulcan character than Spock.
Much of Spock's characterisation was quite crude ("oh, this is one of your human emotions"), Tuvok's was more subtle. Spock acted as if he didn't understand emotions, Tuvok as if he was surpressing them largely, but was still able to understand. Spock was largely a machine, Tuvok a stoic.
Spock was good as a half Vulcan, letting some of his human side through.
Tuvok was the best full Vulcan, but Soval was also pretty good.

I like T'Pol and I think Tuvok is VOY's best character overall.

That said, Spock is one of the most iconic fictional characters ever created. I'm not sure it's even close.

So yes, it's a very controversial opinion! ;)

Nimoy runs acting rings around Russ, and I like Tuvok. And we have to be fair here, Nimoy and the writers were literally making Spock and Vulcans up as they went along. Russ and the Voyager writers had thirty-five years of material to research when doing the character.

Oh, to be clear, I wasn't talking about acting, only writing. I agree that Nimoy was better than Russ.
And yes, time helped refine Vulcans into a more believable/mature concept than in TOS, but that's largely the point: in TOS, the concept of "what a Vulcan is" was quite cartoony.
As far as 35 years of material, though, aside from TOS, Vulcans hadn't been main characters, so the VOY writers did a great deal to shape this new view of Vulcans as extreme stoics rather than walking computers.

Spock was written only as a "walking computer?"

I can't say I agree. I'd like to hear more.

I think the writers used Spock as a crutch. It feels like they just came up with a new Vulcan super power whenever they got stuck. Inner eyelid, katra, long distance telepathy and so forth.

Why not? In my opinion its better than one and done abilities from unknown aliens that never show up again.

- B & B should get a shot to redeem themselves with a mini-series. These guys did a lot of good stuff, and they shouldn't go out on TATV. Nobody to blame but themselves, but still.

- I don't get all the Captain Pike love. I don't hate him, but after all the comments here I expected more.

As Vulcans go, and if we take Spock as the definitive, Nimoy's Spock, then I think so called air head Jolene Blalock did a pretty decent job as a Vulcan.

Yeah, ignoring her looks for a sec, Blalock was fine once they let her be something more than a...disapproving school teacher.

I’ve got a new one...been re-watching DS9. And as much as I love the show (second only to TOS for me) the Winn/Dukat/Pah-Wraith storyline at the end of season 7 is terrible.

Controversial Opinion: I think Picard had the best first season of Star Trek.

TNG wasn't even my favorite Star Trek series. So this isn't something I just say casually. Even when it came to DSC, I wondered, "Do I like the first season of TOS more or the first season of Discovery more?" With Picard, I wasn't even debating anything about it at all. I put its first season over both of those.

There we are.

EDIT: I guess my liking the first season of DSC so much is also "controversial". Even though technically I like the first season of PIC better.

The Voyage Home is overrated.

Troi should've been axed at the end of Season 1 (though I like the character, she never really went anywhere or did anything).

Section 31 is a terrible plot device that has now been overused.

Enough with the Klingons.

The EMH is a worse character than Neelix.

I've found my dislike of Discovery has been highly controversial and I've faced a lot of abuse simply because I don't like it--I've never told anyone they're wrong for loving it, but it doesn't work for me and because of that I've been called out for not being a "proper fan".

On one level, they like the character. On another level, I think they think he represents a return to what they think of The Glory Days. We'll see where actual opinions really fall when Strange New Worlds premieres.

I don't think those are controversial at all - my impression is that many fans were amazed by PIC S1 and disappointed by DIS S1.
