The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

@tomalak301 do you read the Star Trek books? This sounds kind of random, but there is a SGA connection I'm building towards depending on your answer.

I have to be in the right mood for them, but the last time I really got into it I read the DS9 "Season 8" relaunch novels. Is this SGA connection something I would know about based on how far I am in the series?

Oh, OK. The actor who plays Shepherd is a popular choice for one of the NF characters, so if you knew who the character was I was going to ask your opinion.

The Seer

Another great episode of Atlantis season 4. Hopefully they keep this up in the second half because this has been a great first half. This episode asked some great philosophical questions, like does fate determine the future or are they, in the words of Davos, "made by those who shape it". The level of trust and unease with everyone involved was very tension filled. The conversation about making that choice to trust the Wraith on the Balcony between Shep and Carter was really great. Woolsey is still a dick though. I loved the return of "Todd", the wraith from Common Ground and it looks like they have incorporated Luttrell's pregancy into the storyline. That's good news. I loved the Wraith humor bit, probably because it was just so random and unexpected. Also, Dr. Keller continues to impress.

The revelation that the Replicators are taking out human planets was pretty shocking but it makes sense. It takes out the Wraith food supply

Yeah, "The Seer" is a great episode.

The comparison to Kirk seems very apt. Just like with Kirk, the show frequently gave Shepard a beautiful woman to be his episode of the week fling.

I did like the chemistry between Shepard and Larrin. .

Yes, I think we see Larrin again.

They've made a few Sheppard/Kirk jokes

The Defiant One

McKay: There's no point being out there...
Sheppard: He's aboard my ship.
McKay: What are you, Captain Kirk? What good's it gonna do him?
Sheppard: I don't know, maybe he can hot-wire the thing.

Chaya Sar : I am what you call an Ancient and it is also true that I can never offer your people sanctuary. But you are wrong about as to why I came here.

Major John Sheppard : Why did you come here?

Chaya Sar : You, John.

Major John Sheppard : Me?

Chaya Sar : I have lived in solitude for so long that when you asked me to come to Atlantis, I...

Dr. Rodney McKay : Oh my god, he is Kirk!

Miller's Crossing

They took one of my favorite episodes of Season 3 (McKay and Mrs. Miller) and presented a sequel that was much much better. This episode was outstanding. It presents actions of desperate people in a realistic way and shows a broken conscience inside each. Wallace (Stephen Culp's character) wanting so desperately to save his daughter but kidnaps Jeannie and Rodney, McKay begging Todd to help save his sister, who has been infected by the nanites, and then the stuff with Sheppard with Wallace presenting the information and then his subsequent scenes with Rodney explaining why he allowed Wallace to be fed to Todd. This was a very good morality play, and it showed Rodney in a light I didn't think was possible last season. They have not only toned him down in Season 4, but they might have made him, likeable. Also, the Hewlett's chemistry is still amazing and I think it was even better here than it was the last time.

Season 4 is having an incredible run of episodes so far. Next up is the three episode midseason arc. The stuff leading up to it regarding the replicators, the coding, the replicators destroying Human planets, heck even the travelers has been some of the best world building Atlantis has done yet. I think moving the city (I think) deeper inside Pegasus Colony has really helped the show a lot.

This Mortal Coil

Ok, this season has a chance to be the best season of the series. This first part was fantastic, and I only wanted to mention it now instead of just watching the whole thing for one reason. The Vision of the city being destroyed by replicators (The Seer) actually came true. That was some awesome continuity. We also find out officially what happened to Weir. She was a security risk to Oberoth and they killed her. I like the revelation that the crew was all replicator-created duplicates in the hope of helping Niem's faction of Reps learn ascension. It is interesting in this Replicator War that there are some out there who are not involved. The ending was ominous with all the Rep Aurora class battleships popping up on the screen. This was a hell of a start to continue this replicator/wraith arc. Any reservations I had about the Replicators from Progeny have been thrown out the window. This was a great use for them and this storyline has been terrific. On to part 2.

I really haven't tried to notice, but for a midseason finale, the fact that Sam doesn't appear at all was incredibly noticable this time.

Be All My Sins Remembere'd & Spoils of War

I'm a little tired so these unfortunately won't be very long. I'll just do some observations in list form like I did on Sunday:

1) BAMSR was indeed epic. Loved the space battle and the creation of the Replicator bubble to implode the planet. Sam now has blown up a star and helped implode a planet. That's a damn good resume. Also, we do live in interesting times where the humans, wraith and the travelers form a fleet to take on the Replicator armada.

2) Speaking of Sam, yes I'm starting to notice her lack of appearences in this season. This was a 3 episode arc (It really wasn't but that's how it is listed on the Wiki page) and she was only in one of them. I guess it was at this time she was filming the movie?

3) So glad Teyla told John about her pregancy. It actually served both episodes really well.

4) Spoils of War I think was the Wraith episode we really needed. I can't help but feel like the Wraith have been somewhat under developed, but using Todd has really helped in fleshing them out. Finding the cloning facility and destroying it was a great victory for the good guys. Does that mean the Wraith are basically whatever ships are left? I have to think there are more cloning facilities out there and you always have the various Queens on the hive ships.

5) Teyla's role in Spoils of War was great. I'm glad the writers are really embracing her abilities

6) It was nice to see Caldwell again. He has been absent for a while now. I thought he was actually going to get replaced by Ellis.

7) Weir's alive? :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Overall, Season 4 is still on a hot streak. This wasn't a three parter, but it was 3 great episodes that finished the Replicator arc and brought the Wraith arc into more focus.

I just started watching the next episode, and John asked Rodney if he could buy him a beer to celebrate his (possible) proposal with Kate. That made me curious about something. Is there commerce on Atlantis? Is there any kind of economy at all? I mean they are separated from Earth but I think can get get various supplies from Earth via the Gate and the Daedelus, but they really haven't said anything about how these characters get paid.

Well, they might get direct deposit of their US military paychecks in banks on Earth like today. Atlantis has the computers to keep track of that too. But I wonder if Atlantis has the Ancients version of an ATM machine?

Quarantine

This reminded me too much of DS9's Civil Defense, where there is a malfunction on the station and sections of the station are closed off. Atlantis there was a malfunction making the computer system thing there was a virus and it locked down various sections of the city. I'm glad Zalenka got a chance to save the day, because most times he just seems the brunt of all the jokes. I loved the further development of Keller and Ronon in the Infirmary and the scenes with John climbing the tower into the control room were really tense. That is really really high. Also, how long was it between Spoils of War and this episode because Teyla blew up.

The last thing, Rodney let a good thing go because he buckled under the pressure. Katie was a fairly decent character and anyone who can tolerate Rodney's flaws is ok in my book. I can't help but feel like we won't see her again though, which is sad. :(

IMO, the next episode "Harmony" is season 4's weakest episode. And the next one "outcast" is meh. But "Trio" is fun and then it's the final home stretch to the finale. "Midway" is great. And you get the big two parter "The Kindred" and a really cool finale "The Last Man".

I'm looking forward to the finale, premiere and then I switch over to SG: Continuum and see what that movie is all about.

Their relationship was originally planned to be long-term with the intent being Katie would end up pregnant and she and McKay would raise a child together on Atlantis. Then Rachel Luttrell ended up pregnant in real life and the decision was made that it would instead be Teyla who gets pregnant and raises a child, meaning there was no longer a reason to keep McKay and Katie together any longer.

That's a terrible reason. I thought love was love? Why does needing children have to come with it. I thought McKay and Katie had relatively decent chemistry.

Part of it was that they were filming the movie, and I think they started to work on the new show she did, but also fun contract stuff.

She was forced to do the season, but from what I recall her contract for the 11th SG1 season was 'at least 13' episodes, so she is in exactly 13 if I remember correctly.

I probably will watch the big episodes with you because it's been awhile and I can only watch so much Bob's Burgers.

I saw some friends today (outside and socially distant) and they are 40+ woman with no children and me who has always hated children. I wish they would show more women on TV happy to not have children.

Plus I think it would have been awesome for McKay to have a family and a working relationship with Sam.
