So I just finished the series. I have to say I was very disappointed in the production Quality.

The clothing looked like they just went to JC Penney or Walmart and bought t-Shirts,Sweaters and black jackets. If I was transported 370 years in the future wearing my 21st century clothes I would fit right in. The clothes in 24th century trek now include zippers if the 29th century variety as well as button shirts with colors. The shoes look like any work boot you can pull off the shelf at walmart.

The effects were were terrible. When Riker came to the rescue with his armada I thought he was doing the Picard Maneuver because all the ships looked the same. I was sorely mistaken. So a couple hundred Starfleet ships all look exactly the same and ugly to boot. The romulan ships looked hastily put together in the computer and looked very amateurish. Like the Starfleet ships they were multiplied and rendered badly.

The sets looked very 21st century with computer chairs they obviously bought at Staples or office Max. The sets themselves looked bare and not very detailed. One set actually had miniature Christmas tree lights hanging haphazardly on the walls and ceilings. So many set decorators use the miniature light technique to try and dress a set better(used on soaps and WB shows a lot) but it always comes off looking cheesy. Rikers Bridge also looked rushed and honestly just boring.

These first observations are my opinion and I'm sure some of you loved it but when I compare the effects and sets that were done on shows like TNG and DS9 the production here seemed to be well below the earlier shows standards. I expected more from a show that just had to produce 10 episodes vs the average 26 of the 80s and 90s shows.

You are correct: I've raised these observations earlier. However, it does not bother me. The series isn't designed to focus excessively on what the future looks like, and I'm fine with that.

I think it's fair to say from other threads that you dislike a lot of the aesthetics of the show, but honestly, I do not see what you see. It looks fine to me, especially given that in the majority of situations, we're seeing these things from a civilian perspective, and we're seeing societies outside of the Federation that aren't in the best state.

The show looks good to me! The costuming is certinly light years ahead of Berman-Trek. Recall Kyle Riker's buisness onesie:eek:

The fleet didn't bother me, nor the reuse of existing assets like the Disco bridge and shuttles. TNG/DS9/VOY endlessly recycled assets made for the first Trek movie IMO this is no different.

Yeah, the clothing feels like stuff real people would use.

Future fashion has always sucked. Picard is passable.

I don't see how anyone can possibly complain about the production values of Picard. It looks like a movie.

You must've not watched Star Trek V: The Final Frontier or you're ignoring it on purpose. I get it, you think "Gene Roddenberry thought it was apocryphal!" Well, that's too bad. It's out there and it's on film.

If you notice, the further they get away from Earth, the spacier the clothes look. I like how different regions have different styles of dress. The button-up on Picard seemed like it might be a bit too much, but he doesn't dress like that once they're off Earth. So whatever.

This is 2020. In a sense, we're in "the future" ourselves. I still wear button-up shirts. I don't wear spandex unless I'm exercising or as an extra layer of clothing underneath when it's cold out. But I still wear button-ups too.

Fashion will change and it won't change. I think the smartest thing Aliens did in the future was show that in the future people still wear suits. They didn't look exactly the same as suits in 1986, but they were there. And suits are the slowest changing fashion of all. In 2399, I can see them still wearing some version of them. Jeans. Jeans go back to the middle of the 19th Century. I don't see them disappearing any time soon.

If anything, the fashion in Picard is the most realistic it's ever been in Star Trek.

Some folks only means of communication is via complaints. I didn’t really care about most of the sets or wardrobe, I came for the story and was deeply satisfied.

I found the story stretched out. It could have been fine in half the episodes. That’s the problem with arc based shows. Lots of filler in between. I much prefer a mix of stand alone and arc based like DS9 did in its last 4 seasons.

Point out the filler. Put your cards on the table. There's a good chance you mixed up building up the characters with filler. In fact, I'm almost sure of it.

What aspects still look futuristic? I agree with the clean and functional piece, but, as much as I love TOS, I do not relate it to as futuristic as much as I did when I was younger and first watching.

And, personally, as much as I love the design of a show, engaging with the characters is far more what I want. The TOS writer's guide had it right when it said it was a show about people not technology.

Finally, to me, the idea of all of Riker's ships being the same makes more sense in the future Federation to have a single design. That, to me, is exactly what I would expect.

It's light years ahead of the catsuits and spandex jammies.

Even watching the original series today it still feels like it's the future so lot because Roddenberry went out of his way to make sure that 1960s real world clothing and artifacts were in the show as little as possible. Not to say some showed up from time to time but it was much less than what we see in Picard. Let's admit it we won't be seeing set reconstructions of the Picard sets 50 years from now like we do with the TOS sets. Too much of 21st century aesthetics are in Picard and it really takes you out of the moment that we are supposedly seeing the future 370 from now. If someone from 1650 time traveled to our time we would either think that person was going to a costume party or he/she was a time traveled(lol). If a future Picard episode showed a person that traveled from 2020 to 2399 that person would fit right in clothing wise. The truth of the matter is that they decided to save money and not make original costumed to represent society in 2399 and therefore their costume people just went shopping for clothes and shoes. TOD fashion looks more futuristic then what we got on Picard.

Word. And those weird 80s/90s outfits in Unification. Those were some big shoulder pads.

Thought that the makeup was better than in Nemesis and same goes with lighting.

They were the two biggest issues I had with the movie, and it's nice to see any improvement on those fronts.

They were romulans. It's the earth side of things that look 21st century now. Sure the starfleet uniforms look similar to what we would expect but everyone else seems to be wearing stuff of the rack from JC Penney.

If you think TNG fashion is some great thing that should be brought back, you've lied to yourself. Re-watch the series, then we'll talk.

Or are you really dying for people in Picard to dress like Q was forced to in "Deja Q"? Even you know the answer to that one. You just don't want to admit it.

Exactly. Time moves on and so does in show clothing and fashion.

Thinking that part of the issue for some on that end is nostalgia.

It clearly looks like to me clothing and fashion hasn't moved on for this series. They are definitely stuck in 21st century fashions. Who would have thought in nearly 4 centuries clothing styles would be nearly exactly what they are now.

    Ok???

That's the most bizarre standard I hear tossed about. i'm not going around saying PIC is classic like TOS, but declaring one is more futuristic than the other is simply a matter of interpretation. And, PIC feels more like an extrapolation of real world tech in to the future than TOS does now.

Why is the style of the clothing so bad in PIC, in your view? Because it doesn't match some of the strange, jarring choices made in TNG?
