The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Home (SG: A)

I liked this episode, but there was one big flaw with it. The fact that the aliens used a representation of General Hammond and Weir didn't bring up the fact that he was no longer in command of the SG-C made this episode not the real earth in the first 10 minutes. I kept seeing Hammond there and wondered why Weir never asked him about that little nugget and it kind of bothered me throughout. Other than that, I liked this episode gave Weir, Rodney, and Sheppard some character development. Rodney's story was the best, because it felt like Rodney at his "hyper-est". He knows things are wrong and he can so easily lose it that it provided some good comedy. I also really appreciated that I asked Weir to be more involved, and she was in this episode. It's also interesting that I've seen Don S Davis on Atlantis more than SG-1 this season. It was good to see him back where he belongs, even if it was a fake out.

Yeah that was always a waste of Hammond. Did Weir and Hammond ever even meet in the real Stargate world? She was in DC, he was in CO and then the other way around. Jack took over, she went to Antarctica.

Have you met Brooks? As far as I know Brooks and Blalock are the only two that have completely put Trek past them.

Yes, I had the pleasure of meeting Avery Brooks years ago at DragonCon. Him and Cirroc. I told Avery one of my favorite things of DS9 was his relationship with Jake, and I got the biggest, brightest, beamiest smile I've ever seen from anyone.

The only leads I have never met are...

TOS... Majel Barrett, DeForest Kelley and James Doohan. Both passed before I got the opportunity... Doohan just before I started going to DragonCon regularly. I did win Doohan's autograph at an auction. Same for Majel.

TNG... Met them all.

DS9... Colm Meaney and Andrew Robinson. (I consider him a lead for many reasons. Not the least of which I have a large crew portrait with his face on it, with all the others signed.) Hard to get Meaney because he's always working... it's easy to see why. I've met virtually all the recurring people except Barry Jenner, who also passed before I had the chance.

VOYAGER... Jennifer Lien and Roxann Dawson.

ENTERPRISE...Linda Park.

DISCOVERY... I've met Shazad Latif, Emily Coutts, Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Jason Isaacs. I've got all the rest to go.

PICARD... Only met Sir Patrick Stewart.

Nice. I actually had an autograph with Roxann Dawson last year and I did a photo and autograph with Jeri Ryan. Those were good times.

Endgame (SG-1)

Nice to get more about this Trust organization and now they have a bio-weapon. Other than that, it was just decent. I'm finding this new Trust storyline is basically an extension of the NID story and it doesn't really do much for me yet. I did like how it put O'Neill in a position to make a tough decision and it looked like he couldn't do it. Hopefully this isn't the main storyline of the season.

You met Roxann Dawson? Awesome! I always thought she did a great job as B'Elanna, and an even job as a director. Where did you get her autograph at?

it was Star Trek Las Vegas last year. She was in a bit of a rush to sign but the photo op was nice.

After TNG I never paid too much attention to DS9 and I hate Voyager. I didn't like DS9 because the first season or so were rough and then by the time it got good I missed a lot of it. But the only reason I went back and made sure to watch it all was Garak. He might only be in like 20% of the episodes but when he's there he's commanding the screen. The last episode where the changling leader goes "I wish you didn't do that. He was the last clone" and Garak goes "I was hoping you would say that". The glee in his eyes shines through the makeup. He's a main character.

Don't mind us talking about Star Trek, the NID / Trust / Whatever crap is boring. You got the main part, they have a bio weapon now. That's pretty much all you need from the episode. The storyline does pay off later.

The Storm & The Eye (SG: Atlantis)

I said I was going to alternate shows unless I came to a multi-part story and here we have the first Mid-Season Multi-part story on Atlantis. I loved both these episodes. We had a lot of action, a siege situation on Atlantis, the return of the Genii so soon after their debut episode, and my favorite part of this whole thing, the visuals. Remember when I said during Rising how there were scenes that were absolutely gorgeous to look at? Well, in these two episodes there was so much awesome stuff to see and I think they made great use of the CGI. We got to explore more of Atlantis (Something that I hope we do more of) with the lightning grounding stations, and the Tsunami coming towards the city was really well done. Then when the Shield does go up, that entire scene using Atlantis as a lightning rod was incredible to watch and to see the final Shield and the Tsunami going around it just was the icing on the cake. I can understand why the budget on SG-1 is low this season. I think all the money is going towards Atlantis because they really are sparing no expense in terms of the look of this series.

I also really liked the continuation of the Genii story. It's your typical soldiers come in and take prisoner story but McKay got in some great lines (He may be arrogant, but I'm starting to laugh at some of his lines now, like when he tells Koiyla how he's arrogant, he expects all his plans to work) and Weir felt like she had a lot to do. Shepperd was working to take back the city, but I think the MVP might go to Teyla here. She's a fighter and that fight against Sora was really well done. It also looks like they replaced Wraith Steve with Sora so I expect to see her again.

Overall, this was a fantastic two part episode. I also want to say one thing about Ford. I guess he's OK, but I'm anxiously waiting for Jason Momoa (Aquaman) to show up. In fact I was a little surprised he doesn't show up so far in the first season. I know he's part of the main cast, but I guess maybe that starts in Season 2.

"THE STORM"/"THE EYE" was a great two-parter, one of my favorites of SGA. Tension was great, nothing seemed over or underdone. Everyone got something to do.

I think you are partly right regarding the budget for SG1/SGA. I can tell you, though, that BIG things happen later in season 8, so a LOT of money went there.

Plus, each season of SG1 became 20 episodes instead of 22 starting with this one, and since SGA also has 20, I'm thinking this was to help with the budget for both.

I will tell you that big things happen for SGA at the back end of the season. Money was really thrown at both shows, and it paid off. (Pun intended.)

Another scenario... the writing staff for both shows is almost identical at this point. (Martin Gero being the only one, as far as I know, for SGA only at this time.) And since production for both are done REALLY close to each other, it does help with time issues. Time is money everywhere, but ESPECIALLY in tv/movie production. (I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone in that business who cane up with that phrase long ago.)

I will say, without spoiling, that my favorite first season of the STARGATE shows is ATLANTIS. It seemed more... alive, for lack of a better term. Vibrant might be a better one. To be fair, it DOES have the advantage of a MASSIVE universe built-in from the jump. Even SGU had to work harder to build the start.

I don't know if it's my favorite for the franchise, but it's up there. By far my favorite of of Atlantis. I watched The Siege trilogy last night and I could tell the difference between seasons right away. I don't know what was going on between seasons but something happened. Minus about 3-5 episodes season one of Atlantis is awesome.

Just always remember to watch the SG1 multiparter episodes first. You need to finish SG1 before watching The Siege, which is three parts.

This how I'd watch it...
SG-1: Reckoning 1+2, Threads (Part 3), Moebius 1+2 (End of season 8)
Atlantis: The Siege 1-2-3 (Part 3 is the first episode of season 2)
SG-1: Avalon 1+2, Origins. And maybe even The Ties That Bind and The Powers That Be. (The first 3-5 episodes of season 9)
Atlantis: The Intruder (Season 2 episode 2)

If we're going to start giving that kind of detailed instruction, we may as well break out... The Spreadsheet.

No it's not, but that's the only time it really matters. If you watch Atlantis Siege first it kind of spoilers SG1.

And the 'detailed instruction' I gave is almost exactly the same as as what's being followed but my list is a lot easier to follow than the confusing or sophisticated spreadsheet, which is insane.

I was planning to see the SG-1 episode first anyway.

Gemini (SG-1)

I almost forgot about the duplicate Carter replicator. I guess there has been so much happening this season I should have wondered when we were going to get back to it. I like the idea of Duplicate Carter tricking Fifth's humanity again because that is what our Carter did a couple of times. She tricked everyone and now she's out wanting power in the galaxy. Tapping really did a great job in this episode, playing the difference between our Carter and duplicate Carter really well. The ending brings in some interesting new developments that I'm sure will be followed up on soon, or next season. I also like how this haunted Carter at the end. Yeah it's not her fault, but it's her face. I did take interest in the beginning of the episode where you had Sam and Daniel talking about a mission to Atlantis. I guess we're going to see an SG-1 Character going to Atlantis soon. They've got to have a way to travel to earth and back soon. I'm sure it will be important as the series goes on.

I'm actually amending my alternate episode rule this time and my next episode will be SG-1. This next episode is Claudia Black's debut and I've been looking forward to this one for the last few days. I'm excited to meet Vala, finally.

I love "Gemini". Amanda Tapping does a great job as Dupli-Carter. The reverse psychology games that she plays is great. And yes, we will see Dupli-Carter again later this season.

Vala is a great character. Her debut episode is great. She has immediate chemistry with Daniel. ;)

Prometheus Unbound (SG-1)

If I wasn't a fan of Farscape and I didn't know who Claudia Black was, I probably would have thought this episode was just ok. I mean this woman is out maneuvering an entire crew that also includes General Hammond might make me go hmmm, but everything that came after that was pretty good. I did however think the hiccup joke wore pretty thin about half way through.

However, I love Farscape, and I love Claudia Black and I thought this episode was wonderful. You run the risk of not being interesting if it's just focused on one of the main characters, but General Hammond being there and the stage presence of Black really makes this episode a whole ton of fun. I loved every scene with Vala and Daniel, especially the fight scene. I will say though it will take me a while to get used to Claudia on SG-1 because if I hadn't known better, I would think it was Daniel and Aeryn Sun on the ship. Black was basically playing Aeryn, maybe in the first couple of seasons. Heck, when she took off the super soldier helmet that scene was basically right out of Farscape's first episode. I'm excited that she will become a regular in Season 9 and hopefully I will be able to differentiate Vala from Aeryn. Until then, Officer Aeryn Sun was on SG-1, and I had so much fun watching that. ;)

Without giving away any spoilers, Vala has a pretty big role in season 9 and 10.

Don't worry, she becomes a very different character from Aeryn as she develops.
