Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

There aren't twists like that. This series is about being trapped by the inevitable, so the inevitable is revealed early enough that you feel the dread of it.
You say that but there is a pretty big twist in the miniseries. Don’t know if that was in the book.

Have you never read it?

Dune has been considered one of the greatest of the SciFi genre since it was first published. It's influence can be felt in other SciFi novels (plus TV and Movies) since that time. The scope and complexity of the story and depth of the characters, plus the social and ecological commentary built into the story, have had impact on just about every level of society since the 1960's.

In some ways, it's the "War and Peace" of the 20th century...

I tried when I was younger after loving the Dune 2 game but it was a bit too trippy and the world its set too crazy fro me and then watched the Lynch (who I usually like) movie and that was a bit silly looking.

I will give it a go again some day as I love the social and ecological commentary you mention but even now talking god worms and evolved human spice slug pilots might be too much for me and Ive never heard mention of it outside of some real high concept scifi fans so thats why I was curious by what you meant by its importance

I would definitely not judge the book by the Lynch movie, he to aaaa llloooottt of liberties.
Not yet. Had a look on eBay for them. £700 for a 1st edition??? Not bloody likely. :)
Wish some of my books cost that much.
Are you only interested in reading a first edition? There are new paperbacks, and e-book edititons that are the standard prices. Since you mentioned pounds, I checked Amazon UK, and the Kindle edition is only 4.99, a hard cover for around 30 pounds, and a new paperback movie tie-in paperback edition is coming out in Oct. for 14.75.
There's also a collection of the first three books for 9.99 for kindle.
Like Lord of the Rings, and some of the other classics, there's been a pretty consistent stream of new editions coming out pretty regularly since it was originally

I was just curious. I bought a hardcover with a nice looking cover. I always judge a book by its cover after all.

I find I usually prefer to buy the "Tomes" at a used book store, and in paperback format, if possible. Unless I just want a collectible edition, it's going to get a bit messed with while reading anyway...

I’m very careful when I read my books. That won’t be a issue.
Started the Children of Dune miniseries. Got big Star Wars vibes from the twin aspect.

I'm very picky and careful with my books, I try as hard as I can to keep them in as good a condition as possible, although they do sometimes get a little beat up since I tend to take them to work and doctors appointments. Most of them barely even look like they've been read.

Except, those are facets of world building rather than central features.

Herbert set out to write an ecological book based upon his experiences in Oregon. His book definitely explores the nature of of ecological relationships, adaptation, as well as the dangers of relying upon tradition and prophecy leading to humanity's stagnation, and the decline of empires. It also is a spiritual work, weaving in a wide variety of religious traditions.

And, as @JD said do not just Dune by Lynch's work, anymore than I would just Starship Trooper's based upon Verhoeven's work.

.

Never even knew Starship Troopers was a book til now. Sounds interesting given the criticism of some of the books views and could be fun to read a sci-fi that comes from such an opposing end of the political spectrum to me
It's a good military scifi regardless of political belief. My uncle would use quotes from it on leadership when teaching NCOs in the Army.

You wont agree with all of it (I don't) but there is thought provoking concepts throughout.
