Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Chen Chang as Dr.Wellington Yueh

Well, based on appearances, this guy sells it as Dr. Yueh a lot more than Dean Stockwell or whoever played him in the miniseries did.

I always wondered why they forgot to film credits footage of Richard Jordan and Max von Sydow, and ended up having to use roto'd shots of them from elsewhere.

Maybe it was something they came up with late and those two were unavailable?

Hopefully they remember the Fremen aren't supposed to all look Arabians despite being semi-stand ins for "Desert People".

Otherwise it'll come off not so good visually when a lily white kid comes in and becomes their Messiah and leader.

Of course, if they emphasize how the Bene Gesserit set the whole thing up and how the Fremen Prophecy was all BS they taught them so that they'd HAVE to accept Paul (or the Boy that they wanted) as their leader then it might work better.

It didn't stop Hollywood in Avatar to have a white human become a better american Native.. err.. Nav'i than those who lived their entire lives on Pandora ;)

People will always find somethng to get outraged about, never mind that it actually is the story without any intentions - they would really lose it if they had read the follow up books and learn how Bene Genessrit are using politics, religion and sociology to influence native populations centuries before to be able to exploit it to their own ends should they need to (which was also the case with the Fremen when they planted the Messiah mythology within their society).

Well jesus wast sent down to lead a group of Palestinians and judging by all the pics if seen of him hes snow white :guffaw:

And so far we have seen Javier Bardem who yes is from North Africa and Zendaya but neither look Arabian looking at the stills weve seen unless you are refering to the scarves and shawls they are wearing

Watched the movie last night. I was always told it was very slow but if anything it's very rushed. Especially when the lead meets Fremen. Felt like a lot of stuff was just glossed over, like his love interest and the Sting character. He doesn't do anything except take off most of his clothes, but yet the final fight was with him like he was a big deal.
I was also expecting some twist at the end revealing Arrakis to be Earth, but i suppose that would be very Planet of the Apes.
Got the two miniseries lined up to watch next. I hear they are more faithful to the book and made quite well. They should be fun.

There aren't twists like that. This series is about being trapped by the inevitable, so the inevitable is revealed early enough that you feel the dread of it.

I agree about Sting that other than we are told they are the sons of 2 house leaders there is really no tension or hate between the 2 characters and it feels like a lame boss level fight.

There is way too much backstory and world building needed to fit into 1 movie. Would love if the new version was a big budget HBO 10ep series but alas

Well, at least a 2 movies for a collective 4-6 hours is better than trying to cram it all into one 2 hour movies. Lets just hope we get the second half.

Wow, for some reason it never dawned on me that Yueh is supposed to be Asian.

Hopefully they will emphasize that blindly following the prophecy will lead to disaster.

Not yet. Had a look on eBay for them. £700 for a 1st edition??? Not bloody likely. :)
Wish some of my books cost that much.

watching the miniseries now. It’s obviously not as grand as the film having a tv budget but the greater time has allowed them to flesh out the story more. Goes more into the traditions of the Freman which the movie glossed over. He didn’t just fall in love with Chini in a few minutes here.

Here you go.

Peter Weir gave an interview about how to adapt a novel when he made Master and Commander. He described the process as picking a wonderful book, opening it, flipping it over, and shaking out all the wonderful prose until all that's left are the basic ideas and characters. Then you take those items and start your adaptation, adding back in what elements fit the story you are now telling on film.

The movie isn't the book. The movie will never be the book. The movie lives and dies on its own qualities. It can be a successful movie and a successful adaptation. It can be a successful movie and a failed adaption. But there is no point in making a failed movie that that is a slavishly faithful adaptation.

Often adaptations that are too faithful lose the essence of what made the novel great. The first two Harry Potter movies are a great example of this, as is (non SF) the version of The Great Gatsby. These movies are lavishly faithful to the novels but that lose the spirit and feel of what made the books great. I would much prefer an adaptation to be true to the themes and spirit of a novel than capturing all the details.

Considering it is one of the most significant novels of the 20th century, I'm surprised it is on 700. Give it a few more years.

Have you never read it?

Dune has been considered one of the greatest of the SciFi genre since it was first published. It's influence can be felt in other SciFi novels (plus TV and Movies) since that time. The scope and complexity of the story and depth of the characters, plus the social and ecological commentary built into the story, have had impact on just about every level of society since the 1960's.

In some ways, it's the "War and Peace" of the 20th century...
