Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Why not? Shields don’t block blades if they are slow enough, so they need something to protect against that.

Blades have shigawire edges which cut through any armour, and crysknives are naturally as sharp as shigawire blades due to the friction of sand across there edges in the sandworms mouth.

Armour also reduces mobility and speed, which are required for shield combat.

There's only one instance in the books where armour is used, and it's by a smuggler in the desert who knows he can't use a shield and is likely protection against Maula pistols, which the Fremen often use. Gurney stabs him in the throat because he isn't wearing a shield.

Great, they're bringing back the useless fucking Lynch "Stillsuits", because god forbid any moderate to big name actors cover up their faces for more then 30 consecutive seconds. If the face isn't covered, someone would be losing a ridiculous amount of water. but, fuck it, they went out and hired a bunch of b list movie stars, so they obviously can't afford to hide the face of such amazing actors as...the crappy love interest from the MCU spider-man movies, the villain from No Country for Old Men and some shitty young guy who is basically just a random guy with nothing to justify him playing the lead except they apparently wanted the douchiest person they could find cheap in the right age range. Also, everyone has fucking body armor, something that I don't think even Lynch added (obviously bulky metal suits are just great for a desert planet ).

The Lynch movie was an atrocity, nothing should be taken from it, but I bet this shitty movie will also have the "weirding module", cat milking, blood bathing and ending with it fucking raining on Arrakis, since it seems to be more an adaptation of that garbage Lynch movie then it is of the book.

The two Dune Mini series from the early 2000s was pretty much the perfect adaptation (or at least as close as you're going to get to it) of the first three books, finally doing justice after David Lynch shit out that trainwreck of a film. This thing looks to be made by people who prefer Lynch's version. I hope it bombs worse then that piece of shit did.

Well, don't hold back, tell us how you really feel... :rommie:

I'm thinking the armor everyone's harping on is ceremonial, used for House Atreides' grand arrival on Arrakis and then very quickly ditched once everyone gets a taste of the local climate. The hood and the mouthpiece are there on the stillsuit and will be used when our cast are out in the open desert, they're just not being used in a publicity photo.

It does look like there are mouthpieces, just not being warn. It also appears the suits have hoods that presumably have a strap or something to close more tightly around the head.

Kinda hard to make a movie where all the cast are in identical masks all the time.

Also alot of people shitting on Chalamet because hes a pretty boy but he has got some critically acclaimed performances under his belt

The movie or movies might be good but does anyone really think this will make money? To weird for the casual audience and lots of people only know the movies and many no doubt found them also to be to weird. Makes you wonder if the first one bombs if thy even do the second one. Seems like it would have been a better fit on Netflix or something were weird can be a advantage.

I like what I'm seeing. My only real niggle is that I'd prefer the hawk crest to be red, as in the book.
Everyone looks the part, I don't mind the armor so much as as has been pointed out, person-to-person combat is geared towards penetrating shields, so armor is a natural counter to the slow moving blade. Plus of course you can't use personal shields in the desert, what may also be a factor in those scenes.

Hadn't heard that they'd gender-swapped Kynes before now, though I don't see any problem with it (the cast of the book is a bit of a sausage-fest.) I just hope we get that death/vision scene from the book this time! Now that I think about it, was Chani's fremen mother even named in the book? (No, I'm not county anything from Pinky & the Brain.) I assume she's already dead by the time of the story, though I can't recall any mention mention of her other than obvious fact she existed.

Ridley Scott was going to do Dune?
Yup, but when that imploded he took most of the same creative team (including Geiger) and went and made Alien instead (massive oversimplification as to what actually went down, but you get the idea)
He was! Lynch actually replaced him. If you google you can find details. I may be misremembering but I believe he was also gonna split it into two films and was super into the idea of Paul and Alia being an incestious couple
And yet I'd still take Scott's over Jodorowski's any day! ;)
The eyes are fine. Still would prefer a deep navy filling them entirely but they're a decent design choice.
Maybe it's just the way I interpreted the text, but I never pictured the space addicted eyes as being a solid, uniform blue, but structurally normal eyes with dark blue iris and light blue tinged "whites". So pretty much what they have here.
I mean if nothing else, from an optical mechanics POV, solid navy blue (ie, no pupils) would mean their vision would be seriously impaired; practically blind even.
Considering what we actually got, when we dodged one bullet we fell onto some rebar.
Well if it weren't for my watching Lynch's movie (after several aborted yet oddly fascinated attempts) I'd have never even tried to read the book (which also took a few attempts.)

Shigawire weave armor? Maybe the shields projectors are built into the plates rather than all coming from a magical little box on the belt?
Also as I noted above, those scenes seem to all be from the inspection tour sequence, when they're heading into the desert when they can't use their shields...so there's that. Hey, at least there's no pug!

:rolleyes:They have masks. You can clearly see Jessica's in one of the shots and Chani's is partially visible in another. They just aren't wearing them in these few specific promo shots.

Geiger worked on Jodorowski's Dune then took his designs to Alien. Scott was hired for Dune after the success of Alien.

My main problem with the weirding modules was that they injected mysticism into subjects that clearly were not in the books. It lessened the Fremen and their toughness unnecessarily, IMO. And I never envisioned the Fremen fighting style, augmented by Bene Gesserat techniques, as "Bruce Lee-level kung fu", but as more practical fighting techniques with some special moves added -- more like what I've seen of the Israeli martial art krav maga.

A lot of my complaints against Lynch's Dune boil down to the fact that he likes weird, exotic, and disgusting for their own sakes, not as things that might (might) enhance storytelling. The Harkonens were the worst -- They're evil? Give them boils leaking pus and heart plugs that allow them to drink the blood of their slaves. Then folks will know they're terrible. No need to show them doing actual evil things. :ack: :brickwall: Ridiculous...

Exactly.. what i'd like to see is modern close combat action, i.e. effective military hand to hand fighting not cartwheels, elaborate attack/block choreography or standing on a thin tree branch (i love those Kung Fu movies to death but i don't want to see this in a "serious" movie).

Krav Maga is one of the examples too i thought about.. no nonsense, direct attack and defense. Fremen and Sardaukar should both use it and it would be quite simple to show the evolution of it from Sardaukar dominating Atreides troopers until later when they meet Fremen and get their asses handed to them

This is why i'm so hopeful for Villeneuve's version.. he has that subtlety when called for it and i hope he delivers on the villain front too. Nolan's Joker is a good example of this.. despite being a very flashy character his/Ledger's version was a deeply disturbing/insane version of him as he should be. In contrast Nicholson's version was the flash, silly one and i rate it much lower despite Nicholson being a fantastic actor but he didn't have much to work with in Burton's movie.

The basic story is quite simple - noble house gets sent into a death trap because they have become dangerously popular politically to the Emperor and the Harkonnens, the trap is sprung, the house is destroyed save for the son and his mother who find allies within the native population who, in a surprise twist, are actually much more numerous and have tremendous combat capabilities.

Son gains their loyalty and becomes their leader, breaks out of the desert to conquer the single most important planet in the human sphere and forces the Emperor to abdicate so he can become the new Emperor.

I don't expect the movies to go too far into the politics and the sociology of it, much less on the level of the following books, especially God Emperor ( which is a very vital book concerning the overall plot but consists of barely any action and is mostly dialogue). People are also used by now to superheroes and superhuman abilities so the Bene Gesserit, Mentats and the Kwisatz Haderach concepts could be rather easily explained too.

It comes down to the marketing.. visually it can be awesome. Vast sprawling shots of the desert, giant sandworms breaking through the surface, intense combat scenes and a top notch, all top level actors - this can be sold quite well through trailers, interviews and merchandise to create interest.

The only thing that could pose a problem is the now extreme concentration of major blockbusters to the fall/winter due to Corona - the original plan had the movies release over the entire year (Marvel, Mulan, James Bond, Top Gun 2 etc) but they are now being crammed at the end of the year and it could get ugly for many movies when viewer fatigue sets in and drags everbody down.

Plus, it's the best selling sci fi book of all time and the miniseries adaptations both set and then broke ratings records so, yeah, there is an audience....

And then we will never get another one. Hoping something fails means that an adaptation will have an even more of a struggle to get made.

I get you don't like it but wishing it fails is rather petty. If people don't like it then its no skin of their nose since it would be exactly the same amount of Dune films they enjoy now-none.

I love the expanse novels and they are possibly my favorite evr scifi books and I know that the TV show will never come close and will have to drop some plots but it doent mean I cant enjoy it and I know if they ever make films of any Carlos Ruiz Zafon books they will never come close but Ide rather it happen and be average than not happen

Here's the thing that I have come to honest grips with since Starship Troopers and Prince Caspian. Adaptations are not going to be a word for word recreation of the book. It just isn't and expecting it has led to more disappointment than I care to admit.

Expecting artists to come at a work and fit in with my expectations is not going to end well. I am happy that Dune is getting another adaptation. I have enjoyed the various adaptions over the years but nothing will replace the novel.

Peter Weir gave an interview about how to adapt a novel when he made Master and Commander. He described the process as picking a wonderful book, opening it, flipping it over, and shaking out all the wonderful prose until all that's left are the basic ideas and characters. Then you take those items and start your adaptation, adding back in what elements fit the story you are now telling on film.

The movie isn't the book. The movie will never be the book. The movie lives and dies on its own qualities. It can be a successful movie and a successful adaptation. It can be a successful movie and a failed adaption. But there is no point in making a failed movie that that is a slavishly faithful adaptation.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I guess when it comes down to it, Paul/Alia incest probably could have still ended being better than what we got from Lynch.

Considering current pornhub trends maybe Villeneuve should consider adding it back in....

I don't know why, but from when I read the book in the 7th grade I always imagined Graham Greene as Yueh.
