Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Thousands of people performing Bruce Lee-level kung fu in those rubber suits - in 100+ degree desert sand?!? The CGI of today just might - might - be up to pulling that off. To expect it in the early 1980's is beyond absurd. The weirding module was a child of practicality, not stupidity.

My main problem with the weirding modules was that they injected mysticism into subjects that clearly were not in the books. It lessened the Fremen and their toughness unnecessarily, IMO. And I never envisioned the Fremen fighting style, augmented by Bene Gesserat techniques, as "Bruce Lee-level kung fu", but as more practical fighting techniques with some special moves added -- more like what I've seen of the Israeli martial art krav maga.

A lot of my complaints against Lynch's Dune boil down to the fact that he likes weird, exotic, and disgusting for their own sakes, not as things that might (might) enhance storytelling. The Harkonens were the worst -- They're evil? Give them boils leaking pus and heart plugs that allow them to drink the blood of their slaves. Then folks will know they're terrible. No need to show them doing actual evil things. :ack: :brickwall: Ridiculous...

Did you ever read the story of Kyle Machlachlon, how he was so pissed off by the changes to the book he went into Lynch's office with his personal copy of Dune and got in a big argument with him, pointing out discrepancies in the book, and Lynch shut him up with "You're not making Frank Herbert's Dune. You're making David Lynch's Dune."

Oddly enough, what we got in Lynch's Dune was still less weird than Ridley Scott's or Jodorowski's...

I hadn't heard that story. But it jibes with similar stories I'd heard. And while I understand about adaptations and the need for changes due to differences in storytelling mediums, a lot of the changes I see in many, many adaptations are changes that don't improve or even facilitate telling the story in the new medium. I mostly see directorial fiat to leave their mark on a work; or more bluntly, peeing on a work to mark it.

Oddly enough, what we got in Lynch's Dune was still less weird than Ridley Scott's or Jodorowski's...

I've heard so much about Jodorowski's Dune that I think I want to see the documentary, Just out of morbid curiosity...

David Lynch's Dune sucked, so MacLachlan was right.

Ridley Scott was going to do Dune?

He was! Lynch actually replaced him. If you google you can find details. I may be misremembering but I believe he was also gonna split it into two films and was super into the idea of Paul and Alia being an incestious couple

It is really good. It's on Netflix in some regions, as well as available to rent on play/iTunes.

Wow, sounds like we dodged a bullet there.

I found that out on wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_(1984_film)

After the novel's initial success, attempts to adapt Dune as a film began in 1971. A lengthy process of development followed throughout the 1970s, during which Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott unsuccessfully tried to bring their visions to the screen. In 1981, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired Lynch as director.

While shooting LOTR Christopher Lee carried the books around like a bible and in the end had such a big fight with Jackson about cutting the scowering of the shire events that he refused to come back for reshoots and extended shoots.

I dont know alot about Dune but sadly for Dune fans I feel it will only survive as a financially sucessful franchise if alot of the wilder aspects of the story are cut which is always sad for the book lovers

The photos look promising.

But give me a trailer already! :scream: :p

Also, I really need to read the book again...

Yes, that is Zendaya. And that's how "white" she looks normally. Approximately 50%

Not bad looks, if maybe a little, I don't know, bland? As already mentioned, the Stilsuits seem to be based on the design from the Lynch movie, and although they look a bit more practical than Lynch's did, the missing hood and mouthpiece is rather glaring, just like it was in the Lynch movie. This is an outfit that's supposed to collect the body's moisture, why wouldn't the mouth be covered.

The Atreidies uniforms I'm of two minds on. On the one hand they have kind of a generic space future look to them. Although, in uniform Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa look a lot like Duke Atreides and Duncan Idaho as I imagined them, so it's got that going for them.

The armour I'm not crazy about, but it's not a complete deal breaker either.

Overall, it's not a bad looking movie. Could look better, but it's fine as it is.
Is that Zendaya? she looks very white in this photo
I was going to comment she looks very young in that photo. Also still very attractive for someone who lives in a desert and survives off drinking her own piss and sweat. Yeah, I know, she's a pretty girl, and movies don't typically turn pretty girls ugly. Though I thought the Spider-Man movies did a pretty good job of toning Zendaya's looks down so that she didn't quite look like a perfect ten, and could be somewhat believable as one of the mid-to-low tiers in the high school popularity hierarchy. Whatever, I can come to terms with watching a good looking girl in a movie, regardless if it makes sense.

The picture of Jessica with Paul show a mouth-piece hanging around her neck. In the picture of Chani crouching she holds a mouth-piece in her hand.
