If she didn't say it 15 times in her introduction episode that would have probably helped.

Actually, I believed that Trek is to be frozen in time for forever. Never are the people to move, or to change.

    This.

I got used to it, but the first scene was really heavy handed. Like they were hitting you over and over to make sure you got that these characters were close. It was even more awkward because Laris, Zhaban, and the Stargazer doctor all managed to feel like lived-in relationships with history precisely because they didn't try so hard.

They have a habit of doing that with other things.

Personally I didn't mind it, just that opening scene was really heavy handed with it and was a bit weird. Raffi was otherwise great, a very likeable character in a series with very likeable characters. Now if they could just ditch the Discovery crew and introduce new ones there too

Shame on Picard for creating new friendships after he left the Enterprise.

In fact, shame on Picard for leaving the Enterprise! Doesn't he know that single ship out of thousands is the only thing that matters?!

Kirk met and almost married Antonia after leaving Starfleet around 2278. How dare he spend time with someone who wasn't Spock or McCoy.

I wondered if the writers put this in as an example of Romulan arrogance - they commonly believe the Vulcans were the cast outs rather than the Romulans.

I guess I am weird, I get very emotional watching "meat Picard" die. The scene with Data and faux Picard shutting down Data did not have much emotional impact on me, the character had been gone 20 years.

As for resurrection of Picard undercuts the death, I agree. But I wonder what they will do with it. He is not the same Picard and it seems like there could be unexpected stuff coming his way that might be interesting...

I guess it could happen, an arrogant Romulan with their own twisted history of Vulcan.

It could have also been a simple slip up, meaning the Vulcans immigrating to Romulus. But it can also be used by critics to say the producers don't know Trek etc, etc. A lot of people are gunning for any mistakes or slip ups.

To be honest, even I got taken back by it, and had the same thoughts.

Partly--it made the story too convoluted IMO. Except I liked Seven and the Fenris Rangers separately as angle. The plot was just too mashed up.

Sounds like a normal nickname to me. I assume Picard is going to make new friends somewhere, sometime. And they're going to have their own personalities, which includes giving others nicknames. Maybe because it's so new to some people. Everyone is used to him being called "captain" or "Jean Luc".

I watched Season 1 out of obligation. Just as I've watched the first 2 seasons of Discovery.

After all, it's new Star Trek... how can I NOT watch NEW STAR TREK?

But Picard has finally cured me of Trek FOMO.

Star Trek has always been a hopeful escape. I've always wanted to be there with our heroes on adventures. Yeah it could be hard or sad at times... And there could be a dominion war going on, crew members lost etc. But the shows were hopeful in tone and the characters mostly heroic.

But like Discovery, Picard's characters are broken and fragile. Most of them would be villains and cowards should they find themselves in the previous Trek shows.

And their universe a sad one that you'd have to be crazy to want to live in.

Why did we make Star Trek just another generic sci-fi show?

    1/10

Broken and fragile are more engaging for me than the constant righteous authority of other Treks.

I feel like we watched another Trek because the Federation has been at peace for decades, technology continues to grow at a pace, and it required blowing up Mars to get them not to help their greatest enemies. They also undid the ban on technology because they found some robots living their own lives.

And what EVIL party caused the Synth apocalypse? ROMULANS.

To each his own of course.
But for me... I can get broken and fragile characters literally anywhere else.

Star Trek was supposed to be different.

It felt so out of place that it was almost comical. With Raffi in particular becoming the most broken & fragile Trek character ever:
    -she was poor
    -she was bitter
-she was addicted to drugs & alcohol
-she was a crazy conspiracy theorist
-she was estranged from her family

All in about 3 or 4 episodes.

It was? I seem to recall TOS dealing with bigotry, TNG dealt with addiction, and on and on and on.

Star Trek has always been about people, both good people and broken people and everything in between. Otherwise we wouldn't have Sisko struggling with his wife's death (especially after GR"s edict that people don't mourn), Barclay struggling with social anxiety and holoaddiction (and was still struggling with it in VOY). And of course Picard in "Family" and "First Contact."

All the things Raffi was have been in Trek before.
