I don't know X-Men, but I surely don't need another Captain Picard. It's time for new Captains, and more great sciene fiction like the second generation of ST brought us. I lloved every minute of it, even the parts I didn't like.

The third generation brought us back, not forward. Remakes, and reboots and changes for the sake of change that made no sense. Why exactly do the klingons look so different in that stupid show?

If the movies are different from TOS, what was the point of using the same characters as TOS? It's too risky to create a new crew with a new story, so lets steal the old characters and change them. Wait! Fans might hate that. Make it an "alternate reality"

No, there was no need for it. It cheapened ST for me a little bit.For one thing, it's fun to imagine that ST is OUR future...

MAYBE if they had made it a prequel to season 1 of TOS, or stories set after season 3 but before the movies, and they stayed faithful...

Because the concept was not done very well in the original VOY. So, I would watch a reboot.

Have some fun with the concept you couldn't do in the original airing. No harm, no foul.
We're not talking about TMP ;)

Each to their own, but I'd love to see more adventures of Jean-Luc Picard when Patrick Stewart is ready to retire. I'm hoping season 2 or 3 or Picard has flashbacks to the USS Reliant or Stargazer with a new actor who can then take over later.
Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking in 1979 when they changed the Klingons for no reason whatsoever.

I prefer the alternative reality thing because it makes that universe seperate. That was them doing something new with the concept. A Voyager reboot wouldn't be totally new, but it could be a new twist on an old idea, and that could be enough.

Yeah, I figured... They were thinking they had a movie budget, not a cheap 1960s network TV budget, so there was no need for menacing aliens to look like exactly like humans with face paint and different uniforms in a feature film. Is that a good reason?

Now why were they changed again for that terrible TV series?

TOS was actually one of the most expensive series' of it's time. It was far from "cheap"
Is having 40 years of more advanced makeup techniques any more or less valid? The Klingons in Next Gen look different from the classic movie ones too. Here's a complaint from Best of Trek in 1980, it sounds quite familiar to me.

Not having seen Mad Max, of those only Batman and James Bond were good and them only at first, they got worse with the sequels.

I think Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes hasn't been topped.

There's some room for improvement with the characters but probably not enough for a new show.

Chakotay, Tuvok, Paris could have been done better but it's also easy to way-overdo the conflict aspects with Chakotay and Paris. With the Maquis's conflict being about territory so far away it wouldn't make sense for there to be a huge amount of conflict on Voyager and OTOH if the conflict was about something more central to the Federation overall it wouldn't make sense for Janeway to make Chakotay first officer. Torres was done almost as well as she could be, despite occasionally being a bit static or inconsistent, while Kim, Neelix, Kes don't seem like particularly strong characters in general.

Some ideas for improvement in a new version.
Either have Torres be our main engineering character but not the chief engineer or have her be chief engineer but also have a Starfleet engineer like Carey or Taurik/Vorik appear much more often.
Make Neelix more of an actual expert and a diplomat (and security adviser) rather than a cook. Kes could also be more involved in diplomacy.
Make Paris more low-position at least initially, like Ensign and on the security staff or transporter operator, rather than pilot, let Kim (also Ensign) or Chakotay be the pilot.

If anything, the USS Voyager would need a facelift to comply with the starship designs from what's seen in ST: Picard. I can't see why it can't be a direct spinoff of that series since a VOY alum is present in that series. I'm not sure what the current state of the Federation is when it comes to space exploration so a new Voyager series could make that foundation.

Just swap bodies, which is hilarious given all the times in TNG where someone said something special is lost when/if someone is put into a robot body (read: "generic")...

Voyager is Voyager, its not going to get rebooted, Now that I say that, The potential of the series was sqandered..
So I say make a NEW series with the same plot point, Ship was tossed somewhere and it'll take awhile to get back, or never.
Many Many ships have been lost of the multipule series, wasn't Geordi's Mom's ship lost?
So, how about this concept, a ship get hurled away from the federation, but its like.. to the Great Megelanic Cloud thats like 160,000 Ly away.. So at regular warp, And theres like 100,000 Ly of intergalactic void.. it would be impossible, or if the ship has Slipstream drive, it would still be a bit much,
OR they get thrown out there, but they know the federation is mounting an expedition to the LCM in 5 years time, and all they have to do is go to where they will arrive and wait..
So many story ideas, no need to go back wards..

    No, I wouldn't.

I can't imagine characters like Janeway, Chakotay and the others being played by other actors than Mulgrew, Beltran and the others.

And I totally cringe at the thought of seeing Kes being played by some third-rate Britney Tyrelips 2010's-2020's "actress".

Thanks for posting this... I haven't seen that book in eons. It touches on two important things.

"We didn't have the budget for this before... this is how Klingons really look".
"The new look is an affront to Star Trek fans; we're just supposed to accept it without explanation"

I can see both sides. On the one hand, the movies didn't have the budgetary restrictions of the TV show, the prosthetics were probably relatively less expensive and easier to create and apply than they were during the time of the series, and therefore why shouldn't they update the Klingons look to show them "as they were supposed to be"? Additionally, the race and their history wasn't really fleshed out at all during TOS... there's nothing wrong with making them a race of warriors that value "battle and honor" and such, even though that didn't exist so much before.

But I don't see any of this as a "change" to Klingons "for the sake of change". The changes had point and purpose. They updated and modernized their look to show them as they were "supposed to be. Over time the backstory got richer and gave them a purpose. No one likes changes, but these were good changes. They shouldn't have looked exactly like humans in the first place, but look at sci-fi effects in the 60's.

But as I said, I don't understand why they were changed AGAIN. That, as the article said was "change for the sake of change". What was the point? It seems the new producers wanted to make insignificant changes to something that already existed to call it their own new thing. Kind of like retelling Peter Pan from Captain Hook's point of view, so that you can retell the same story again and people won't notice as much.

Ensemble. Sometimes the balance is off and it just doesn't work even with strong characters, and sometimes the Ensemble is greater than the sum of it's parts, even with weak characters.

I think the only problem with Voyager was the balance and interaction of the ensemble. I'm not a multi-million dollar a year Hollywood writer and producer, so I don't know how to fix it... but from my armchair certain things stand out.

Here are my opinions on the matter:

Firstly, the actor who played Neelix was not up to the role. He had the look, but his acting skills did not do justice to the part. I've said this here before, my apologies for repeating myself. Neelix could have been... no make that needed to be so much more. His place in the ensemble was important... he was a comic "foil" for Tuvok and Paris, but none of it worked. The part of Phlox on Enterprise was similar. but Phlox was far more interesting, far more likable, and far better acted. And Phlox didn't have seven seasons to flesh himself out.

Secondly, the Torres character wasn't that good. Her duality comes off as pathetic, her "Klingonness" comes off as pathetic, and a few episodes just cement that. The character wasn't likable. Maybe she was supposed to be the ensembles "duality" character, but where Spock/Data/Worf worked, Torres duality didn't. It just made her unlikable. She hated her human side, she hated her Klingon side, she hated herself, and she was just angry. Worf was comedically gruff, Torres was just angry and hostile. And, when she wasn't... well you still didn't like her.

Thirdly, Kes. Everything that needs to be said about Kes has already been said.

Fourthly, Seven of Nine. Because the other aliens in the ensemble were so flat, Voyager needed Seven from season 1. She was the Spock/Data/Worf "internal conflict" character struggling with duality, trying to become "better" in some way.

The doctor can be considered an "alien" because of his situation as a hologram and as an artificial intelligence. His character worked, but unfortunately he had no background from which to draw interesting stories and storylines, andt least on a consistent basis.

Now, you might notice I didn't say anything about the human characters. That's because all the human characters in these shows are all the same. How interesting is Wil Riker? He's not, very. They're human, with human backgrounds. No matter how good they are, they are supporting characters for the alien crew. If you think about it, that's true of TOS, and TNG. TOS would have been very different without Spock, TNG would have been totally different without Data. Every one of these shows, even DS9 had strong alien characters in the ensemble for the human character to interact with.

Voyager didn't. Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, and Kim were all human.Their interaction with each other isn't all that interesting show after show. Until Seven, there really was no interesting aliens in the ensemble to drive complex story lines and complex scenes. But by the time she got there, the damage was already done.

I am glad they didn't use Paris' past and the Marquis' conflict to drive stories, though. That would have made it worse.

Only if the Maquis remained Maquis, and the conflict between the crew was not resolved for about 4 seasons

Changing the look again is no more change for the sake of change than it was the first time. TNG bumpy headed aliens are not up to the visual standards of the time, no more so than the Klingon yellow-face makeup was up to the standards of the tng era. Both were done for exactly the same reason. One may or may not like the execution of either change, but a change of some kind was necessary both times (see also the Nutrek movies which also significantly updated the Klingon design, but in a different way)..

As for the culture, DSC Klingons are not that different from what came before. Realistically, I would say DSC shows a multi-faceted, semi-integrated view of the individual Klingon cultures we'd already seen previously (it combines the warrior culture of the TNG era with the political conniving culture of the tos era) while adding little bits and touches of its own which don't interfere with anything previously established (the house of Mokai with it's dedication to spycraft, the religiosity of T'Kuvma's cult, etc.).

I might give the opposite answers perhaps...

Should it happen ? Why not? It's a solid premise for a good series and I'm sure it would be re-imagined thoroughly differently today from how it was in the 90's, and not just the visuals aesthetics of it.

Would I watch it? No, I might not, I'm pretty content with the old stuff myself. At least, I probably wouldn't pay any extra money for it/do any extra effort for it to get access to it. I might watch it if it just came along on TV, though.
