First impression... I dunno..
It's either greatest episode in Star Trek history, or it's a major wasted opportunity. It's either a 10 or a 3-4. Will rewatch later today and get back to you.

So Data was in that cybernetic prison all those years and Soong and Maddox never told anyone?
How would anybody know if they never communicated with him.
He told Jean-Luc that they were in a "Massively Complex Quantum Simulation", it's not like Data could just grab a communicator and call home.
Everyone just assumed that when B4 fell apart there was no way to retrieve the D/data.

Maddox took what he though was just a part of Data.

Also, when Bruce left, Soong didn't have anybody to help him finish the Human Mind transfer device.

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I can't wait to watch it again this weekend, and I think a full season rewatch will only enrich the experience. 10 for me.

I hate the “power of wub” stuff too, but I thought this transcended that. Picard walked the walk when he was willing to die to save the synths. It wasn’t just “I wub you” but a fundamental recognition of the worth of the Other and its right to exist, even if it’s trying to kill you. That’s very Star Trek to me.

Agree that’s a mess, but I thought the musings on mortality kinda made up for it.

To be honest, my problem was less the "power-of-love"-schlock (that was mostly fine).

It's the "please don't press the button to destroy the universe"-shit.

Like, all we ever knew about Soji, suddenly she's like, "yeah, fuck that, fuck everyone, I'ma kill everybody cause they're bio-filth". What the hell? That type of story never does any of the characters any good, no matter how good the production/writing/acting otherwise is.

I have not had the opportunity to read through the post episode viewing comments, but I assume there is going to be post-episode 10 angst.

I hope all of you are ok, keep strong, and know that this too shall pass

Soong should have shown them the footage of Sutra helping Nerak
Perhaps he didn't want them to know that she killed Sung? (forgot her name?)
He did disable her off away from their eyes.
He was very disappointed that she became like the rest of Humanity.

The important message and pathos here is being human is being able to let go and die.
So bring back* and "kill" an already dead character so you can contrive the meaningless drama of "killing" an already dead character.
And "revive" an already living character, so you can contrive the meaningless drama of "reviving" an already living character.
Who speechifies about the importance of being able to die.

*Keep in mind Lore or B4 (whose engrams they used would not have the experience of the self sacrifice that defined Data's supposed sacrificial transcending experience, that this whole premise and narrative is built on)
Which makes the whole thing moot.

To be fair it does sound like they revived Picard without his agreement. I strongly think with his character he would have said "I'm 94, it's my time to go, give Data this body instead so he can have his dream of having a full human life."

Yeah, I did find her turn harder to buy. But at least there was an attempt at gray instead of “Genocide is bad.” Maybe my bar is too low, but this was a big step up. And considering the overstuffed finale is apparently mandatory now, this seemed remarkably subdued and thoughtful.

More importantly, it made me feel something, which Discovery has yet to manage.

I guess the other thing that bugged me about all the ships being the same is that it was obviously unrealistic. Why would Starfleet send that many ships that were all the same class? That would never happen in real life. The US Navy does not send 40 Ticonderoga class cruisers and nothing else.

People wondering about Seven's orientation also know about Raffi's now XD
Be careful what you assume... <insert trite ass of u and me aphorism> especially about someone's orientation. I don't want anyone with torches coming for you - especially since I don't think we have worked out the protocol of torches and social distancing

I like the idea of Seven and Raffi together though - they are different enough to be interesting, but have enough of a rough past to make sense together...

I sincerely hope you are right that Seven joins the S2 cast. I love that character and actress.

I enjoyed reading your post - it really highlighted a lot of the good stuff in the episode without focusing on the iffy stuff.

To the question of why couldn't Data get the new body--when Picard died, being biological, the decision to use the new body for him had to be made immediately.
It's more the point on why does Data feel the need to die right then and there? If he had waited a bit longer, he likely would have gotten a new android body with a finite human lifespan and even a human look (so Brent doesn't have to wear the makeup). He would get his wishes of being human (as close as possible anyway) and having a finite life.

The whole "positronic neuron" thing feels less "fake science" when you realize that it's not very different from cellular DNA (each neuron has the DNA for the entire being, like in organics) and Maddox took Data's memories from B4. That's why Data outright says he has no memory of his death, the transfer happened before then.

Is Picard free of Locutus now?
Did Rizzo beam herself out before she hit bottom? She'd already saved herself twice doing that.
