Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

I agree. Would've been much more dramatic. I also agree with the "bland TV-like cinematography of TSFS". It has a less dramatic feel to most of the shots. EXCEPT for the space shots. Most of those are top notch (emphasis on most). Actually, and I talk with my buddy about this often, it's as if they spent ALL their budget on the new ships/craft we see in the film. We get the BoP, The Excelsior, the Oberth, Spacedock, and the merchant ship, all of which were great designs and went on to be used in countless Trek productions going forward. But most of the principal cinematography is.....just....meh. Almost every set onboard tne Enterprise sets looks as if they were lit cheaply, harshly, and quickly as opposed to their very soft, dim and dramatic representations in the previous two films.

Granted, these are just my opinions. I still love the dramatic beats of the film, I just wish the principal photography would've yielded better results.

I dunno, Maybe it's because I grew up a fan with these movies but I never thought this was a problem (I'm also blind to TOS' "Cheapness"). TSFS is a quiet interlude between the "downer" ending of WoK, and the more upbeat TVH. This may sound weird, but the bridge lighting in the latter part of the film reminds me of the sensation of getting a snack at midnight and the only thing on is a single kitchen night-light. But then, I've always seen WoK - TSFS - TVH as Dusk - Midnight - Morning in terms of feel. The minimal lighting also drives home that, "Enterprise feels like a house with all the children gone" sentiment as well.

Better if they'd have had Scotty on his way out, hears his name called, looks up, and Styles is looking down on him from the deck above. This would visually establish that Styles sees himself as being on top of the world, and that he and his ship are better than/"above" the old Enterprise. And in doing a "dirty OTS" (over his shoulder) down at Scotty you'd make the engineer look small and suggest the challenge he's up against.

He could possibly have wanted Styles to view himself as larger than life, but is actually "too big for his britches" as my dad would say. Showing Styles as being no bigger/better/higher than Scotty when he goes about bragging his superiority, and Scotty giving him the fake smile before making off with Styles' metaphorical manhood may look lame at first glance, but it informs Styles being made to look the fool afterward.

I dunno, with all the sealed-up walls and implied high ceilings it suggested to me that the Excelsior is so advanced that all the advanced technology is sealed up and perfectly functional behind those smooth walls. Compared to the Enterprise's engineering littered with those prop consoles now, the austere engineering room and all that talking of automation in the bridge scenes made Excelsior as advanced as the Enterprise was in TMP.

I thought it was fitting considering the Enterprise herself was designed in such a way to imply all the complex machinery was sealed up in a similar way.
You're talking about the set. I'm taking about the photography. Apples and oranges.

Regardless, it's still no excuse for the remedial filmmaking 101 shots they used. :)

I just ran into someone's (inaccurate) versions of the TV refit bridge and engine room sets, which does make me want to see those interiors properly modeled someday.

I second this! I would love to see @Donny do a more accurate version of the Phase II sets. :)

So, I started something tonight:

I was intrigued by the idea (someone posted on one of my threads, can't remember which one) to do a K'tinga bridge with a TOS aesthetic as a D7 bridge, since I was debating going back to do some TOS stuff for a while.

But that got me thinking. I'd much rather model the K'tinga bridge properly before making a TOS version. And making a K'tinga bridge would allow me to remaster my existing TWOK Enterprise torpedo bay (the old one's age is showing, and due to some blueprints released a few years ago, I could get it more accurate now). ANNND it would allow me to make an accurate TSFS Bird of Prey bridge as well. ANNNND, I'd like to do a "Kronos One" version of the K'tinga bridge in the future too (a little more regal than the Amar appeared).

ALSO, getting the K'tinga bridge's helm console modeled would allow me to build a complete Regula One Transporter / Old City Station Transporter room, since the console was redressed for both of those respective rooms. So there's many advantages of making a K'tinga bridge, as the set and some of it's pieces were recycled into many other sets along the way. Also, having the dilithium reactor room modeled recently means I already have the aft walls of the K'tinga bridge ready to go. They just need a grimy paint job ;)

PLUS, I've just always wanted to model the K'tinga bridge anyway, and it would be fun to do some non-Starfleet stuff for a while. Getting to do something with grungy, worn textures and smoky lighting would be a nice break and expand my palette a bit.

So, for now, this is the project I'm doing next. Should I start a new thread specific for my Klingon stuff?

YES! YES! YES!!

A thing from me, I love the standard K't'ingas. Really, we only ever see them in their Imperial scheme for The Motion Picture before it goes off-screen and then re-painted for Trek 6 (Wherein afterward it never featured that standard scheme ever again). I also loved how unique the bridge was, especially compared to what came after.

I say make another thread! Can I hope this will also go into TSFS and TVH permutations of the Bird of Prey bridge?

Either way I'd love to see the original K't'inga bridge fully realized. It's also one of my favorite sets for its rarity.

We’ll see how far I get with everything. I’ll probably do the K’tinga bridge first, move on to something else for a while, then come back later to construct the TSFS BoP bridge, etc. I imagine the K’tinga will keep me busy for at least two or three months, as there’s quite a bit of stuff to figure out (for instance, the spaces to port and starboard of the main chamber, what the second level looks like). Thankfully, there aren’t a ton of display screens and those we do see are pretty simple. Making a ton of display screens, as we’ve seen with my Ent-A bridge, is exhausting since I demand I animated them properly. So that’s a plus.

We will see how it goes!

"Donny's Klingon Ship Interiors" sounds pretty good to me. Or something along those lines.

I think “Donny’s Klingon Stuff” would be more appropriate, since I imagine I’ll model at least a D7 exterior model and a couple disruptor pistols as well ;)

Hmm. Forgive me if you already have this one, but I found this. It's a sketch by Probert:

It's one of the only glimpses of what the second level looks like that I know of. Not sure how it lines up scale-wise with everything else we know about the craft, though.

I believe the side room (they only built one, I think) of the Klingon bridge were in part made up of the wall pieces seen outside the bridge simulator in TWOK, behind the opened viewscreen and where Kirk steps down and meets Spock outside.
  1. Like this

Yep, I'm 99% sure that the wall outside the Bridge Simulator was lifted from the side rooms of the K'tinga bridge, and I will be modeling them for use in said side rooms. This has the added benefit of allowing me to properly model the bridge simulator one day, with an opening viewscreen door and a much debated No Smoking sign ;)

Which, in turn, will need permanently damage the viewscreen frame so that the upper-right segments never align correctly again. ;)

So I'll be taking final shots of my TWOK Engineering today, since I've let that task slip by the wayside as I geared up for the K't'inga bridge, and am considering taking a video of the sets as well. Stay tuned!

Quick question: if you were to get a video of either the TMP set or the TWOK set, which would you prefer? The TWOK set has much more to show off than the TMP set. Or should I just bite down and do videos of both?

Jeez, I'm now remembering I never took videos of the bridge or transporter room set either. Hmm....

Well... Both?

But otherwise I'd say TWOK since we see more of TMP on screen.
