Then again, kilt sounds like its a variant form of killed. lol I would actually think tunic would be a better term for these things
Honestly I believe that both men and women looked pretty silly in those skants. The skirt part looks way too short (barely covering anything in some cases), the go-go boots and the short sleeves just look silly for a uniform and they are completely impractical (just look at poor Marina Sirtis in the pilot, doing her darnedest to avoid flashing the audience whenever she sits) I'm all for androgyny in fashion, but impractical clothing such as mini skirts/kilts whatever you want to call them would have been better suited to civilian garb than Star Fleet uniforms. Imho, the skants would have to be about knee-lenght to look good and practical, add long sleeves and maybe a belt to structure the design more (I think as they are they kinda look thrown together, like quite a few of the costumes in Season 1) and black tights/leggins. The dress uniforms, on the other hand look good imho, very Greco-Roman.
As silly as I found the skants at the time, it's striking how well they're aging. Gene was really decades ahead of the rest of us with this idea!
I do remember those guys. Apparerently it may very well have been something to do with a kind of unisex unfirom that male and female crew members wore. Didn't last long though.
Well, he was raised by humans. Maybe he just didn't like the look of dresses. And Jason, I like his amazement too. What was he so amazed about? Is he the president of the Jean-Luc Picard Fan Club?
With no irony I say, I actually like the skants, and even wish they'd just been the standard uniform across the board. I don't even know why, there's just something about them that appeals to me, aesthetically. They're also super unique.
Given how restrictive and uncomfortable the jumpsuits were, the skants would be a far more practical garment, giving a wider range of movement.
This is the dress uniform of the Greek Presidential Guard. It was the standard army uniform in the first half of the 19th century during the revolutionary wars. I think it counts as a skant Though I'd prefer if they didn't wear those full leg socks
Lol, I think there might be a good reason they wear the leggings. But this could also be more of a fancy look, long shirt. The Klingon shoes are the bomb though.
New theory! Fertility. Those boys, needing babies, to grow their family, with weak swimmers, were advised to wear miniskirts.
But wouldn't that depend on where they lived? Too cold=shrinkage. ( gotta throw pepper on it, and catch it when it sneezes to go pee) Anyway, pictures?!! I wanna see Riker, leg up on the console, next to Data in his micro-miniskirt. (With the cheerleader short sleeves too)
See, but that's already several times better than the Skant in Season 1; the skirt seems a bit longer, and it's also a lot looser than those very tight skants, probably allowing for greater ease when sitting down, running, kneeling, jumping etc. And I like the full socks. The skants would have looked a lot better with full leg sucks/tights/leggings :-p But look at how short those skirts are, even on the men, with that length they'd pretty much have to tuck it away in a tight pair of y-fronts, which would be detrimental for the swimmers.
Yup the notoriously silly-looking Tsarouchi. Inside the pompon they hid sharp objects used in close combat by kicking the enemy! LOL...
