(As an aside, Melinda Snodgrass, the writer of Measure of a Man, recently came out and said she had no idea Maddox was going to be used, she only learned about it after his appearance, and she pointed out that, be cause Measure of a Man was a spec script and she was not on staff yet at the time, CBS/Secret Hideout owe her royalites for the use of her character. Royalties they have not yet negotiated with her and haven't paid. Sounds like another legal headache is coming for the production team, unless they do some serious reaching out to her, and she's a lawyer too, so if they've accidentally used the character thinking he's the creation of a staff writer and therefore free to use, then she's gonna have a field day cleaning out their bank accounts in court :D)

.
Cbs will work it out with her. But i think we now have the reason why maddox died so quickly...

-Kestra, Troi, and Riker speak in these made up languages that I guess Kestra and the brother (who was named Thad) made up

So first, thank you for taking the time to write this all out. I was very annoyed when the episode just ended like it did. I appreciate you and the other poster summarizing.

But, made up language? Really, Star Trek writers? It reminds me of my work wife's mother who has a made up language to speak to her dogs so the NSA can't understand. True story... Have Riker and Troi gotten a little unhinged? Or am I just projecting?

So the explosion from the trailer is from the mind meld with Commodore Oh?

We can assume Patrick isn't staying more than a few years, so why this need to massacre anyone and everyone? Hasn't Trek learned in the past 30 years from killing Spock and Kirk? I know Hugh isn't on the level of those guys, but still. I'm hoping since del Arco referenced Hugh possibly reuniting with Guinan on Twitter that this death isn't set in stone and he got rushed to a regeneration alcove or medbay or something.

I am behind on this thread and I am sure someone else had commented on this, but it's super crappy that Rios and Rafi left Elnor on the Artifact. You would think there would be a little more integrity in former Starfleet. Is this just the opportunity for Picard to go back for him?

If this were Starfleet, Elnor is what they would call a deserter... He beamed on the cube against direct orders, what happens to him is his own fault.

The Kestra stuff feels totally off to me, almost s if from nother show, but it oes compute with several scenes from the trailers, so...

How do Picard and Soji end up in a Forrest where Kestra is galavanting about? It's not like Picard gave Hugh specific coordinates of the Riker homestead...

Children making up languages isn't an unusual thing. It happens all the time.

They were going to try to get him. It was his choice to stay wnd help Hugh.

If Hugh was rushed anywhere it happened offscreen and required resuscitation. Maybe it is another big fakeout, but did not seem like it.

The explosion is from the mindmeld. Kids make up languages alot (including many twins interestingly enough). The made up languages is something Kestra's brother did so it ties to that.

So... assuming Hugh’s fate is sealed, what do we think the reaction here and on the Interwebz in general will be? Will lots of people rage quit Star Trek? Will there be lots of articles published about it? Or will it get mostly ignored?
There was some noise about Icheb, but not as much as I would have expected. Will people care more about Hugh compared to Icheb?

I think fans are going to be pissed off for sure. Personally, I'm going to be upset by it if it's true because it will likely be a case of killing a character for the sake of killing a character...aka shock value. Icheb's death had narrative importance as it heavily influenced the person Seven has become. What is the point of Hugh's death other than to shock us?

That being said, Jonathan Del Arco seems to have alluded several times on Twitter that he's going to be back for season 2. So, maybe there is more going on in later episodes?

This.

The explosion is just a possible future that Commodore Oh shows Agnes to scare Agnes into taking the tracker device. It's what could happen if all the synths are activated

Plus just to add to the language talk, when Deanna and Soji are talking about real vs fake, Deanna tells Soji that her son really wanted a homeward for him and his sister since they grew up on starships. That's why he created that planet (Ardani I think) for them and then made up the languages to go with it. Deanna had told Picard earlier that Kestra still cries and aches for her brother, so I think they're using the languages as a way to keep his memory alive.

As for Hugh, I didn't really like how he was presumably killed off so suddenly after the buildup. I do think some fans will end up upset if the death ends up not being for anything beyond shock value.

I really, really hope Seven shows up and then Mortal Coils Hugh back to life lol. If Hugh is dead; I think there might be a few narrative reasons (not saying I agree with killing him). Fans connect with him so the death hurts. It really effects Elnor because Hugh is someone he couldn't save. It brings Seven/the Fenris Rangers into the main story. I would not be surprised if we get an info dump after Seven gets to the cube maybe info she uncovers while trying to sabotage it. It also steers her toward helping the xBs that are left. Not saying I agree or am right--just I can see the ideas.

Maybe that line about chronometric particles was Picard sending a Hugh lookalike android back in time to get killed instead.
