My mind would be blown next time I see Cowboys and Aliens.

I know I'm an even smaller minority than I am with The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I love Cowboys and Aliens and I've lost count the number of times I've watched it. That said, I hadn't thought of the possible Indiana Jones influence, so I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I watch it.

and, ya lost me with that one. For a movie called Cowboys and Aliens it was utterly devoid of fun and humor. Big misstep. Never rewatched.

That reminds me: I forgot to watch Cowboys and Aliens.

He doesn't have to get into scrapes himself. Just be around others who do the fighting. Someone who accidently finds adventure instead of going out and doing things he knows is dangerous and will require action. He can always be talking about being cautious while maybe his partner is more of the wild devil may care one.

The adventurous one could be his brother, Indy's Uncle. Every time they get into trouble, Indy's dad could say, "If I ever have kids, I will never even tell them you exist."

Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, and Crystal Skull are all better than Raiders.

Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones movie in my opinion, probably the second worst Spielberg movie I've ever seen after Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Crystal Skull is almost as bad. Personally I consider The Last Crusade to be the best Indy movie, with Raiders a distant second, but I'd never put Cyrstal Skull or especially Temple of Doom over Raiders, which is a very good movie (I just consider TLC to be better in basically every way).

Temple of Doom has it's issues or a issue in Willie but otherwise it's still a fun adventure. I am someone who also thinks Crystal Skull isn't that bad and to this day I will defend them using aliens. It was a perfect choice with it's 50's setting which was a time period when aliens were starting to become part of the pop culture of the time with those B-movies and alien sightings started to get noticed then for the first time. Also Russia as the new baddies after the Nazi's made sense.

I'm not particularly disappointed that Spielberg has opted not to direct Indy 5, and while I think Mangold will be fine I'd rather have seen Joe Johnston behind the camera.

As for which film is best, I don't know. I don't even have a preference order; I'll watch whichever one I want to watch when I want to watch one. I like Last Crusade the best, and Temple of Doom is the most problematic, but they're all watchable and I like them.

My problem with the 50's setting was that it was too far removed from what made the series so good. And as far as the aliens thing goes, the big problem is that it's such a big trope, that it creates the equivalent of a big silence in a room. How do you go from there if you move forward? That's why it's better to have it set further in the past.

Ha, ha, it's funny because family trauma explains away a seeming plot hole! Meaningless franchise extension prevails!

The way I look at is the whole thing a is a natural progression: Going into the 50's brings the Cold War in lieu of the Nazis, the styling goes from pulp fiction to b-movies, and with that change of styling, aliens with the real-life fable of crystal skulls as the MacGuffin is a clear fit.

She's annoying, but that's the point, and she ultimately comes through for Indy and Short Round in the end, proving that there's more to her than just her shrill fish-out-of-water persona.

Have you seen 1942? I'm a huge Spielberg fan and I barely made it 20 minutes into it. I don't know what the hell went wrong there, but something definitely did.
