Spoilers Star Trek biggest problem is Alex Kurtzman

Excellent post. I watch Episodes of Star Trek pretty much all year round. I finished watching in release order last year, had a break and now I’m watching in chronological order this year. I’d love to visit and alternative reality where TNG is released now, just to see what fans actually think of it. Watching most of TOS and TNG is a bit of a struggle now. So much of Trek is technically pretty poor, it’s the overarching ideas and universe that I love. Not the brilliance of the writing in TNG or DS9.

Agreed. And the first couple of seasons of TNG are tough to watch now. There is some good stuff in there, but alot of painful junk too. Alot. ENT, VOY and DS9 too.

This is functionally the same as blaming Rick Berman personally for everything one doesn't like about 90s Trek. Where does this idea come from that showrunners are some kind of dictatorial overlords micro-managing every single step of the creative process? Why is Chabon interviewed for Picard then instead of Kurtzman? But yeah, knowing how TV production truly works, he's obviously being fed his lines by Cyrano Kurtzman through a wireless headset.

Not to mention it's a wildly different TV environment than the one 30 years ago. Of course Picard won't become the same cultural phenomenon as TNG was, because we're way past the time when 30 million people watched All Good Things. When you have 300 cable channels and are subscribed to multiple streaming services, not to mention Youtube, it's no wonder no series truly stands out when at any given moment, there are dozens of different ones you could start watching and become a fan of whenever you wanted.

I've heard there's a sick subset of viewers who watch multiple shows... and enjoy them.

I have to say, the reference to the Expanse made me have a little giggle. If that’s the antidote to the poison that is this dystopian, dark Trek, I think you might find the cure is worse than the poison.

I haven't seen The Expanse but from the trailers on Youtube it makes Picard look like a lighthearted Disney film.

Kurtzman is the head runner, he may not be doing the writing but he is coming up with the story and over seeing the writing.

Is he? I’m pretty sure the leaves that to the showrunners. He and Heather Kadin are in charge of the overall plan of production. And I would imagine he might add a note here or there. But he’s certainly not getting in the weeds with the writers.

Look, dislike these series as much as you want. Blame it on Kurtzman if you have to. But get your facts straight on how TV production works.

This thread is just an attempt at bait, right? The original post isn’t serious, surely?

Hadn’t realised that Kurtzman wrote all 34 episodes of Picard and Discovery to air, thus far. Also didn’t realise he’d been Showrunner of them both for longer than the 5 or so episodes of Discovery that he had to come in and cover, past midway point of season two. I’ve learnt a lot from the poster of this thread, I must say! ;)

Also, let’s just be very clear, that list of film credits that you associated with Kurtzman does nothing more than prove that he is the HIGHEST caliber and experienced head honcho that the Trek franchise has had on TV. Yes, more than Gene who could barely get a show made, and certainly more than Berman.

well we agree on something, believe me when I say this is becoming a big problem that is hurting all of today's trek. its like kurtzman wants to make trek appeal to this MCU and modern comic book crowd.

no he is not a very good writer, I think he is an okay franchise runner but its the writing of the new trek shows that are just terrible compared to the best we have seen.

Making Star Trek to appeal to the MCU and comic book crowd is the best thing to happen to star trek in the last 20 years. If Star Trek is going to survive, it needs to be accessible and not made to appeal to a bunch of gatekeeping, man-children who don't want to share their toys.
