Brian Brophy didn’t return?

Has anyone asked the showrunners why the recast? Are they on Twitter?

Yep. They said, “Maddox was actually in an episode of TNG? No way! We just needed some character who was only going to be in one episode for ten minutes before he gets killed off, and somebody gave us the name Bruce Maddox. Nobody told us he actually existed prior to our show!”

True quote.

They wouldn't have cast Corbett anyway. He'd have been too old and I doubt he could play Cochrane the way the writers of FC intended him to be.

Maybe Maddox has good genes.
A 62 year old Glenn Corbett would only have been 7 years older than a 55 year old James Cromwell. We have much older people running for President.

I actually read somewhere that James Cromwell, upon finding out that there was a previous Zefram Cochrane, expressed concern that actor would want the role back (and maybe that it should be offered to him) until being told Corbett had died. Can't find the link now, but Cromwell sounds like a classy man.

Trek fans are used to actors reprising roles, even one-offs. Even Arne Darvin with Charlie Brill. That's why I guess we got used to that without realizing that's the exception, not necessarily the norm, in this business.

Corbett died before FC was filmed, anyways. He wouldn't have been available for consideration even IF the producers had seriously contemplated the idea of bringing him back to the role.

...
what if i told you I'm Eve? :p (I don't understand the Adam reference)
...
"I don't know [so and so] from Adam" is an old expression that simply means you have absolutely no familiarity with the person at all. It could imply that you have no way of knowing if they are a credible source of information. Or you might say it if you are accused of being in cahoots with someone who is suspected of a crime and you wish to categorically deny any association with them at all, etc.

Honestly, most fans of Picard other than some of us here probably didn't even realize it was a different actor, and may have even forgotten about Maddox from TNG. So I doubt the showrunners have been asked about it.

Now, had it been a recurring role where he was a significant part of the story for the first season or so---maybe then people would start to notice and maybe ask by Brophy didn't return---that's a big maybe. But the role would get more attention then and then people start looking things up and that's when questions come up. But for a 10 minute role, I doubt you'll see significant questions.

For me--I'm a continuity nut. Whenever possible I like to see an original actor for a character come back if the role comes up again--and that goes for any movie or TV series. It's always a nice nod to the previous episode, series, movie, whatever. And I'm curious now why Brophy didn't return. Was he asked? If not, was it considered? It'd be interesting to see what happened, just out of curiosity.

For a 10 minute role--I'm probably not going to sweat it too much other than the curiosity factor. Reading the novel, which Maddox has a larger role in....I do imagine Maddox as portrayed by Brophy.

I say we just go out and recast all Trek characters in Picard with Patrick's buddies from X-Men. Famke Janssen can be Crusher (resemblance to Kamala is purely coincidental) and Hugh Jackman can be Riker.

I wasn't a big fan of NuMaddox's hair. I found it to be a major distraction. I think Brophy's hair would lay flat if he grew it out, instead of poofing out in all those curls like that.

Yeah, Brophy has straight hair and the new actor has curly locks. Not that someone can't curl OR straighten out their hair over the span of 34 years but still.

It was a distraction that reminded me it's a different actor.

Zhat Vash interrogator: And now, due to your noncooperation, we shall curl your hair!
Maddox: No, no, anything but that!
Interrogator (curls hair)
Maddox: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Present-day Brian Brophy has that annoying under-lower lip-but-above-chin racing stripe hair. I would have found that even more distracting.

All this controversy would have been avoided if they had just cast Robin Curtis as Bruce Maddox for Picard.
Actually Robin Curtis as evil Commodore Saavik instead of this Oh lady wouldn't be a bad idea. It would also mix her up in the continuity mess that is Spock's disappearance.

her deadpan monotone "sheer fucking hubris" would have been interesting
