I have joked that I am one of those people for who the only captain is Jeffrey Hunter's Captain Pike, that I think the franchise was ruined after introducing that new captain played by whatshisname from Montréal. But then, I am sure there are some fans who think even "The Cage" marks a degeneration from a platonic ideal.
Gentlebeings, what we witnessed in this thread was a beautiful example of a logical fallacy. The argument is set up with a definition of exclusion that ensures that this Star Trek never offends personal sensibilities, i.e. the "I know when I see it rule." Then, the argument declares that those who oppose the definition are "haters" of that definition, whereby ensuring no common ground can occur. It's classic.
I'm not sure I'd call myself a fan of ST:Picard and definitely wouldn't for ST: Discovery...That said I don't know if the "Star Trek for those that hate Star Trek" is necessarily true either. Like anything else it has a lot to do with personal taste in storytelling styles, politics, and myriad other things...probably more so than even taste in specific versions of Trek itself.

So you are seriously defending Worf’s killing of Duras, because it‘s “working within the moral code of the Klingon Empire” never-mind that Worf is a Starfleet Officer sworn to uphold the laws and values of the Federation, while simultaneously dumping on Elinor’s (not a Starfleet officer) killing of the Romulan Senator (who BTW was intent on killing Picard, our main protagonist) when that act was “working within the moral code of the Qowat Milat”, the Romulan sect in which Elinor has been raised up his entire life. Hell, Elinor even warned the dude before he did it. Elf-boy was all like “Bro, don’t fuck with the old man, I will kill you.” and dude did it anyway... You know, you could at least try to be consistent with your argument here...

I’m going to be honest here, I love TNG, it was my introduction to Trek. I was actually interested in The Orville when it was first announced, even if Orville is a stupid damn name for a Starship and yes, I realize that is actually the point. But due to all the toxic, SJW hating, anti-feminist, right wing, professional Discovery (and now Picard) hating internet man babies holding Orville up as “real Trek” I will NEVER watch and have never watched a single damn episode of that series. Unlike the professional haters who supposedly despise Discovery and Picard and yet continue to pay CBS All-Access for the privilege of watching them every single week. And the fact that The Orville’s been forced to move to a subscription based streaming service just fills my sadistic little heart with such joy. Oh god the irony. LOL!!
WOW ... your waaay off the Reservation with that one. I've been a TOS Fan since Sept. 6th 1966 and I am enjoying PICARD immensely. Most of the folks complaining about this show are TNG Fanatics and that's proven by just reading the threads in this forum. I don't have to pull any chit outta my butt.
No, they weren’t and still aren’t truly, though O’Brien did open that door a bit further. If they were, we’d be able to bring up random examples (aside from the discontinued yeoman) as easily as those for commissioned officers and immediately rattle off the ranks and insignia. As it stands, I had to go and see what Memory Alpha has pieced together on that subject over the years.
I've reached the point where I automatically translate "It's not like Star Trek" to "It's not like TNG," mostly because Voyager and Enterprise kept doing increasingly more watered down versions of TNG for 11 more seasons. We've already got 18 seasons of TNG, that's more than enough for me, thank you very much. If only they were braver with Voyager and didn't roll back all the Maquis-Starfleet conflict, scarce resources, damage to the ship sticking etc. ideas in favor of more TNG-lite stories, then we wouldn't be in all this mess now where some people mistake Berman & Co. playing it safe for Star Trek being a formula or framework for storytelling as opposed to a franchise/setting with a large variety of stories to tell.
