Brian Brophy didn’t return?

That could have been anyone? Like, honestly, if Jurati pulled up Maddox's personnel file while she was doing the exposition for Picard in the pilot, there would have been way less expectation.
My expectation was only that They obviously were going to use the Maddox character again.
I had no reason to believe or expect that They would use the same Actor unless/until They actually came out and announced such.
Would it have nice if They had, of course, but it was never imperative for me that Mr. Brophy be the only one.
Star Trek Productions crossed that bridge waaay back during the TOS Movies and it didn't seem to hurt their box office all that much.

I mean, he doesn’t act anymore and is in a different profession. I don’t know if they approached him or not, but if they did and he doesn’t want to, they can’t make him. Plus, it was one episode decades ago. I honestly can’t get too worked up over that one.
Frakes didn't act in years, why ask him back to play Riker? :p
They didn't approach him, he didn't even know about Maddox being mentioned.

His last acting credit is 2014, actually. Anyway, he's been the Director of (appropriately enough) the Caltech Theatre for 10 years now. Maybe he wasn't interested in returning?
Actor unavailability is another matter. At present, I'm not convinced Brophy was ever asked.
Once Brophy reveals that he was asked and turned it down, I will cease to be irritated.
Maybe they asked and he was not able to do it
He seemed sad that they didn't even ask him.

I'm just sad cause I wanted to talk to him about it and now there's nothing to talk about :(

It doesn't appear to be obvious, going by this thread.
What is the point of this comment?

Star Trek's a huge success yet it's also produced a lot of shit episodes and ideas. The one doesn't negate the other.
Yes. Exactly. It would have been nice.

I can't understand how this is even a thing. Are there untold thousands of ardent Brian Brophy fans that I didn't know about? Were people counting down the days until they could see the triumphant return of Brian Brophy to what is clearly one of the most pivotal and beloved characters in TNG?

Was there an interview or tweet or something? How do you know he wasn't approached?

Yes.

But no seriously. What's to understand? It would have been cool to see the actor play the role again. Why not?

Because in the alternate universe where Brophy played the part, you would have somehow gone, "Nah, I'm good." Huh?

Probably.

Hell, why not recast Sisko every fourth episode?

I'm sure the people who thought Brooks was a terrible actor would have been fine with it. But we're talking about guy who showed up once in an episode 30 years ago. The character gets mentioned once after his initial appearance and is then forgotten.

I wouldn't care if anything changed in the portrayal of Maddox (although, if his original dickish Maddox also managed to be sympathetic, maybe that'd have created a more complex character?), but it would have been nice to come from the same face, voice, and mannerisms we know as the character. And kinda cool to see a face we haven't in so many years, and maybe to see a non-current actor pull it off.

Judging by his acting credentials which include being 'extra' in The Waterboy, I somehow doubt it.

In the context of what Actors play what minor or secondary characters, it really hasn't mattered in the grand scheme of all things Trek.

Probably.
Then why are you asking why that's petty?

We're talking about a series that's bringing back characters from twenty years ago (thirty if you think the movies sucked). Part of what's cool about the series is seeing the old actors. Yeah, it would have been sweet to get this little easter egg too.

Petty. He'd have probably been fine.

No, but it has proportionately? Ergo, hi, I think it would have been cool to see the original Maddox. How you doin'?

I didn't even know who played maddox until people starting getting mad about it.

When I read novels like Immortal Coil, Brophy is Maddox for me - in my mind's eye. As the novels represent one possible future for Picard, not the only possible future, a different actor is not a big deal for me: think of all the fates Maddox might have suffered in the Multiverse (secretly observed by Q):

a Maddox killed, a Maddox 150 years old, a Maddox married to Jurati, a Maddox trying to improve B4, a Maddox with Irumodic Syndrom, a Maddox assimillated.... etc.

Petty. He'd have probably been fine.

Personally i think it's petty to be worked up over a guest actor from a 30 year old episode being recast but i don't feel the need to call the people i'm disagreeing with 'petty'.

I'll start looking for his various background performances and extra parts to see what his acting chops are like. Shouldn't be too hard right?
