Brian Brophy didn’t return?

Creating a new character is more preferable to me at this point in time because of the outrage and near-castigation of CBS by accusing them of maleficence towards Brophy. It's all too conspiratorial.

But is there really a whole lot of "outrage"--or just a few grumbles on the internet? In the long term, this will have no lasting impact whatsoever and, at best, become something to look back on and laugh.

"Hey, remember when we spent days arguing about recasting 'Bruce Maddox' of all characters? What were we thinking?" :)

Maybe I'm just unlucky and happened to be on 3 different sites talking about the same thing...

Why? If they could bring Brophy back, then why not? There's nothing to be "good" about creatively, since we don't know why Brophy didn't return. It sounds to me like you're just being petty for fan reasons, not creative ones.

How am I being petty? I just don't care that a one off character was re-cast. It's happened in trek before, 3 times in DS9 for example. And I didn't find Brophy's performance in The Measure of a Man memorable and considering his last tv role was in 2011 as a background character, i'm not convinced much would change in terms of his portrayal of Maddox. That is a personal opinion, if you want to get bent out of shape over it, that is your prerogative.

It's not about his acting warranting his return (whatever that means; he wasn't bad) but the fact that the character returned. If it's between creating a new character and non-Maddox-Maddox, then a new character would have been less irksome.

So contemporary life can be strange and kinda shitty, true.

So, yeah, this. Again, my idea was if you're going to recast, at least show us a picture of the guy earlier on so we're not expecting something else for 5 episodes. I was kind of looking forward to seeing an actor I, or most, hadn't seen in a while. Tarantino famously spoke to this in his casting of Kill Bill.

I don't know that it's conspiratorial or outrage-inducing, but it does warrant some discussion on a fan bulletin board, yeah.
Just so you are aware, I first posted this picture around here well over a month ago, before the first episode even aired and heavily speculated that it was going to be Maddox...

I am surprised you didn’t do it when Mark Lenard wasn’t used as Sarek.

and your cancellation spared you the anger over Leonard Nimoy not playing Spock.

The Pike situation was my fourth time. Believe me, I was not thrilled that Jane Wyatt wasn't there either.

While the episode itself is memorable, the only line I remember of Brain Brophy’s is two words, delivered over the top: “A machine!”
Because...

Brophymania.

Nope. Then people would be outraged that they didn't use Maddox, and debating why they didn't...

"Well maybe..."
[Looks up name of actor who played Maddox.]
"...Brian Brophy wasn't available."

Reading the OP indicates there is outrage there.
The punctuation in the thread title alone fairly screams it.

But it won't be any where near as fun as the SOMBRERO Thread was.

Because in the alternate universe where Brophy played the part, you would have somehow gone, "Nah, I'm good." Huh? If it doesn't matter to you who plays the part, but it does to lots of others, why not kill two birds with one stone and Brophy play the part?

It's happened in trek before, 3 times in DS9 for example.
As mentioned multiple times above, it was eye-rolling then and also one that's been talked about time and again. Hell, why not recast Sisko every fourth episode? It's just a TV show. Doesn't amount to a hill of beans in this world. Get over it, nerd.

...and considering his last tv role was in 2011 as a background character, i'm not convinced much would change in terms of his portrayal of Maddox.
I wouldn't care if anything changed in the portrayal of Maddox (although, if his original dickish Maddox also managed to be sympathetic, maybe that'd have created a more complex character?), but it would have been nice to come from the same face, voice, and mannerisms we know as the character. And kinda cool to see a face we haven't in so many years, and maybe to see a non-current actor pull it off.

That could have been anyone? Like, honestly, if Jurati pulled up Maddox's personnel file while she was doing the exposition for Picard in the pilot, there would have been way less expectation.

Nope. Then people would be outraged that they didn't use Maddox, and debating why they didn't...
Some people would be...mildly?...nearly imperceptibly?...dissapointed, but Maddox could have been just another scientist who tried and failed to duplicate Data thirty-five years ago. That dick, wanting to take Data apart prematurely... This series raised him, above the thousands of other cyberneticists in the galaxy, to have succeeded now. Well, shucks, okay; let's see him.

Can we just blame this on Bryan Fuller and claim Maddox was re-imagined as a bearded Old Testament prophet with veins that go Black Alert when he dies and a biological need to bake his own cookies? Probably has two johnsons, too.

I'd prefer a flashback to a hospital room with a guy wrapped up in bandages. Head to foot. Then I would be at peace.
