I don't really get why Picard tear of that "Romulans Only" sign and then went into the bar. For once it is really stupid as he must know it would provoke the present Romulans. But even more so it doesn't make really sense considering what went on before. I mean he saw how poor that place it and voiced regrets to the nuns and Elnor for abandoning them completely. The last episodes made clear that he thought that the Federation and Starfleet acted completely wrong in abandoning the rescue efforts and in this episode he admitted even before the bar incident his part in it all, that he should have tried more.

So why go the provocation route? He must understand why Romulans are not a fan of humans and other Federation members right now. And especially why they wouldn't like him personally after he broke his promises. So why not try to make amends and get rid of that "Romulans Only" sign with that speech he hold after the sword fight? Something to build some bridges and lessen the hurt. Instead he just acted so much like he deserved respect from those Romulans around him and then threw a hissy fit when they didn't give it to him. That felt off after he already admitted to the nuns and Elnor that his past actions and especially the actions of the Federation and Starfleet were wrong.

actually, i consider that scene quite important, it's the moment when his mode changes from there is something i should do to ... and damn the torpedos

They should have made it clearer where this Vashti planet is. I assume it’s in neither Federation or Romulan space. Are these Rangers a new faction?

According to ‘The Last Best Hope” novel (which I assume is not canon, but is a reasonable enough source since Beyer was involved), Vashti is in Federation space.

Picard violated the Neutral Zone and chose to resettle Romulans on a Federation planet to which they had been invited by the locals. There was a theme running through the book: the Federation was struggling to hold together a consensus to continue the mission, and Picard was acting unilaterally - ie, violating 100 years of foreign policy - to ‘save lives,’ and leave Clancy et al to hold the mission together at the Federation Council Even if the synth attack on Mars hadn’t happened, it was likely that the mission would e fallen apart anyway.

This "Mary Sue" business is absurd. Every hero is a Mary Sue because that's who any given show is about.

Harry Potter: Mary Sue
Frodo: Mary Sue
Kirk: Mary Sue
Dantes: Mary Sue (and a brilliant in story reference to this btw)
Sherlock Holmes: Mary Sue

You might not like the Mary Sue cliche, but it's as old as Agamemnon.
No, not every hero is a Moral Mary Sue. Picard is, but not everyone.

Kurtzman IS NOT WRITING THIS SHOW.

Please get the Hell off that boat, it capsized a long time ago and you're just floundering in murky water.

Every time you post this you completely destroy any good will that folks might have had for your reasoning.
It is the first time I have actually. I am not sure if you know what a Showrunner means, but it means that no script, no line, and no plot goes thru without her/his approval. So no, I do not blame that weeks writer. I blame their boss. The boss of the show.

Well, that's a boldface inaccuracy, you've thrown Mr. Kurtzman's name out there on several occasions.
And your wrong, Mr. Kurtzman oversees the entire franchise now, with a cursory involvement in each individual show.
He relies on the folks he has hired for the day to day decisions and writing of individual episodes.
He does have final say if he thinks something doesn't gel with the overall scope of the IP, but I very much doubt he goes around nit-picking the way you think.

That seems pretty unlikely - A warlord running a sector in Federation space? Regardless of how the Federation feels about the romuleans - I cannot see that.

It is more likely that given what we know about upcoming episodes that it is just beyond the federation border.

Just like there is no on-screen evidence of a USS Verity (unless I missed it) - I would ignore this unless something on screen confirms it.

Behind the scenes:

"Mr Kurtzman! We finished the set for Picard's study at his vineyard!"
:shows it to him:
"Wow! This looks fantastic but... How much did it cost?!"
"Well... er...."
"You realize we're here for only three episodes and the rest of the show mostly takes place on the ship right? We're going to be way over budget!"
"Well... How about on the ship Picard uses a holodeck recreation of his study at home instead of a normal room on the ship?"
"Brilliant!"

complete with holo phasers under every damn table

No, he is the Executive Producer of ST Picard. Were you actually unaware of that? Apparently some are.
And some think they do, but really aren't aware of what that actually entails.
Continually attempting to adapt it to their faulty reasoning.

Wouldn't that put Vashti in the Neutral Zone?
