You know, if you took out that central pedestal I'm not sure I'd recognize that set because that's all I've ever paid attention to. Once again you've made me look anew at a set that I've been looking at for 38 years.

I find it recognizable from the hexagonal panels with the disc-shaped light fixtures, and from the overhead screens that are distractingly recycled from the Klingon bridge in TMP (and even still seem to have Klingon writing beneath them). I think the hexagonal light panels are recycled from some other production too.

The overhead screens (and the walls they are attached to) were definitely from the aft section of the K'tinga bridge. Everything else in this set, including the hexagonal walls and their light panels, were built new for this set, according to the blueprints. Screens similar to those overhead screens also showed up in Kruge's BoP bridge in TSFS, but according to blueprints, these were new pieces as well.

This room was later recycled as the Klingon BoP library computer in TVH, where Spock browses marine life on the screen until he comes upon the humpback. The center pedestal was used to show the degrading dilithium crystals in that film as well. The pieces of this set later went on to serve in many Klingon ship interiors in TNG (albeit with the light "rods" removed) and the Pakled ship, among other various sets I'm not too sure of right now. Perhaps a Ferengi bridge as well.

In '82 when the movie debuted, I unfurled my copy of the "cut-away" poster depicting the movie Enterprise from 1979. It revealed that section of the engineering section and as positioned in the poster, that new chamber would have jutted considerably from the otherwise curved surface of the outer hull. At that time it really bugged the crap outa' me. Thankfully, I eventually acknowledged and embraced the mantra from the last lines of the MST3K theme song. I "just keeping reminding myself it's just a 'show', I should really just 'relax'..."

You can add it to the list of things that couldn't possibly fit inside the refit Enterprise as shown, like the forced-perspective-painting corridor extending forward from the engineering foyer and the rec deck that's somehow 2 stories high despite the saucer undercut. See also the TOS shuttlecraft and the Delta Flyer both being bigger on the inside than the outside. Starfleet obviously has TARDIS technology.

I actually did a test, and plopped in my accurately scaled Refit Enterprise model over my engineering set and lined up the intermix shaft with the impulse crystal. And guess what? The foyer to the engineering room (the one with the console where Kirk tells Decker to shove aside) doesn't even fit within the hull without jutting into the deflector assembly! So not only does the corridor absolutely not fit, but bits of the engineering room itself don't.

I'm torn a bit, but I think I do want to depict the long corridor outside of engineering like we see in TMP. I know most of us know it doesn't fit, but I feel it is a part of the experience of being on the TMP Enterprise. And many of you know, that's what I go for. The experience of being inside the ship, honoring what we see on-screen.

Or I could just depict both.

If you're going to align the vertical power conduit with the blue stripe on the hull, then Main Engineering and the entry-way is bound to look very different. Is a forward facing entry-way even possible?

TMP felt more cinematic in no small part due to huge open spaces like the Rec Deck and the long corridors, it would be a shame to remove them IMO

Donny, as much as it would be great to find a way to make it all fit, I'd rather see you recreate what we saw on-screen (but without the limitations of a soundstage, like you've done with the horizontal intermix chamber). So yeah, TARDIS the shit out of those sets.

I swear I could've done a better Ten Forward set than what was featured on the opening of Picard. They made the windows have square corners for Christ's sake! THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ROUNDED!

I didn't notice that, but I found it odd that in the external shot, only the middle set of three windows was illuminated even though there were three adjacent triads of windows all looking in on the same room. I mean, sure, it was all just a dream anyway, but that was an odd mistake.

I suppose I also remember the lit circular rods. I certainly remember recognizing them in ST4. I had no idea it was because the entire set had been redressed!

Spent the last couple of days getting in all the graphics and decals. Tomorrow I'll do the central pedestal and the blue lights underneath the grating.




For the overhead monitors, I was never quite sure what we are seeing in the viewports, as we never see them in good detail. It looks like it is supposed to be some sort of three-dimensional image, probably employed on set by the use of an actual diorama of some sort inside the viewport recesses. Perhaps some kind of foil? It also appear that colored lights are moving over whatever is inside. These appear to have originated on the K'tinga bridge we saw in TMP, but we never get a good look at them in that film either.

I've always imaged them as some sort of monitors with three-dimensional microscope images of the crystalline structure of the dilithium crytal(s) inside the reactor. So, I took some images online of various crystalline structure under a microscope and quite literally put them in-game, added some parallax occlusion via a heightmap to make them appear three-dimensional on the "screens". I added some panning colored overlays on top, and voila. I have something I consider close enough to match what we see.

Also weird that you can just put in the floor grating without having the central pedestal, as if it's just sitting on top of the floor rather than just being an access conduit for something underneath, which is the only thing it reasonably could be. It underlines just how strange the set design is and how hard it is to justify in the context of the existing set.

@Donny when Spock enters the chamber, the the round lights (two groups of 13) above the control panels are extended, evoking the idea of control rods. I was curious if that would be a movable feature.
